Class Prophecy The following items are a brief summary of important news events in 1962, ten years since the DeMotte Indians of ’52 graduated. Critics raved about paintings drawn by Joan Scott and Doris Coberly, which are to be hung in the Metropolitan Art Gallery. One critic said, “Since we can’t find the artists, we’ll hang their paintings.” Fred Boissy was re-elected by a landslide to his position of assistant to the assistants’ assistant dog catcher while I was elected governor. Janet Hammerton and Carol Thornton have enrolled in the Society for the Prevention of Old Maids, a prominent social organization. Doctor Skeeter” Wright and nurse Judith Kingma discovered a new miracle drug used for the cure and prevention of ingrown toenails. Two secretaries, Anna Mae Belstra and Joann Kaper, at the Hand-in- Lap Insurance Agency have received a large inheritance from distant relatives who lived in San Francisco. Barbara Bennema’s search for a fellow missionary in the jungles of Africa was climaxed when she found her in a native village. Her first words were, Miss Terborg, I presume.” The noted speed demon Bob Hunter has won the stock car race again at Indianapolis. This makes the fifth consecutive year he has won that event. Harold Kingma received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the exacting art of ditch digging, the only degree of its kind ever given. Coach DeYoung is slightly irritable after his basketball team lost to Coach Duggins’ speedy five 103 to 0, for the 501 consecutive game. Prosperous undertakers Marvin Terpstra and Eddie White startled the Undertakers Union with their new lay away plan and with the invention of an adjustable coffin, which accommodates all size bodies. They’re so busy they ask you to order your coffin a year in advance. Harold Jabaay is the new television comic whose antics have brought him international fame. Joyce Jabaay has received the Noble Award in science for the discovery of a process of isolating sugar from coffee. Paul Kaluf and Mahlon Grevenstuk have opened a new restaurant on the Main Street of DeMotte, called the Gravy.” Carol Jo Hart and Joyce Hamstra have recently returned from Europe where they toured all countries there. They will begin teaching again at DeMotte College in a short while. This has been a brief hopscotch of headlines in 1962. By Ed Totten
