Ahead of us loomed a long jour- ney into the Land of Knowledge. As we were unacquainted with the trail and the many difficulties which might arise during the course of our journey, we asked Mr. Moolenaar to be our guide. We elected Joyce Hamstra as our chief leader and chose Harold Jabaay and Janet Hammerton to aid her. In order to identify ourselves from the numerous other tribes who were seek- ing knowledge in this vast land, we chose as our outstanding colors red and gray, and carried our favorite flower, white roses. When we had traveled only a short distance along the narrow path we were attacked by a forceful and experienced tribe of Indians. We survived this attack very well and therefore we were officially accepted and invited to partake of the opportunities of the land. By winning this battle we lived up to our motto Knowledge is Power.” We continued on our way with a better understanding of the adventures which lay ahead of us and although our energy was tapped at times we agree that the first lap of cur journey was enjoyed by all. The fall of ’49 found us again making our way along the trail. For this lap of our journey we chose Mr. Poucher to be our guide. Carol Hart was elected to be our chief leader, and assisting her as petty chiefs were Robert Hunter and Janet Hammer- ton. Although John Hartley, Pat Hanson, and Gwendolyn Garrett had left our tribe in quest of new lands, our force was in- creased with the addition of three squaws, Joan Scott, Mary Ann Holz, and Bertha Fultz. During this part of our journey we found the path to be rocky and steep in places, bur that is forgotten when we re- member the good times we had, such as our bowling party in December. As we journeyed through the land of ’50 with Mr. Poucher again as our guide, Janet Hammerton as chief leader and Paul Kaluf, Joyce Hamstra, and Carol Thornton as helpers, we met many new experiences. One of our braves, George Coberly, left our tribe. Two squaws, Carol Thornton and Doris Knight, joined to make a total of 27. Our guide, Mr. Poucher, wishing to go to another district of the land, left our tribe. In his place we chose Mr. Leffler. After traveling along for several months, we de- cided to stop in a town and entertain the people. After careful preparation we pre- sented the play Half Past Teen,” which was a great success. We started down the trail again and soon came upon another tribe of Indians who were completing their last year in the Land of Knowledge. We prepared a great banquet in their honor, which closed the third lap of our journey. The fall of ’51 found eagerness and ex- pectation in the minds of the members of our tribe. We had finally reached the last lap of our journey. For this important part of our journey we chose Mr. Hission to guide us over the plains and around the patches of uncleared primeval forest. Har- old Jabaay was elected as chief, with Paul Kaluf, Carol Hart, and Estill Duggins to aid him. Doris Knight, Kay Woudema, and Ernest Swart left our tribe, leaving a total of 22 braves and squaws. Feeling the urge to entertain again, we traveled to the same town and gave the play In Cherry Time,” which was greatly enjoyed. After this the months passed swiftly by, and now we are within a short distance of the end of our journey. As we, the Senior tribe, stand before our graduation, we find ourselves looking back over the happy years we have spent in the Land of Knowledge. Our graduation, while it is a door that opens to us greater opportunities near and far from our present camping grounds, it is also at the same time a door that closes to us the thrills and joys of learning together in the land. We know that the storehouse of memories from this journey will remain with us through the years to come. By Rutii Terborg Class Poem We, the class of nineteen fifty-two, Want you to meet us all; So one by one I present to you, Each Senior, great and small. Mr. Hission has sponsored us well; This last year, we know, was tough. For guidance in all things, we Seniors can’t Begin to thank him enough. She’s tall and slim, has long blond hair, Let’s first meet Anna Mae. We wish her real success in life, And Herbie, too, some day. To be a mssionary is the aim Of this blond in the Senior class. Whatever Barbara’s work may be, We say Good luck” fair lass. He edits our school paper well, Fred Boissy is his name, To enter politics, his wish, We hope he’ll reach his aim. This red haired girl is always busy, Working hard at this and that. Without her much would not get done; To Doris, now, we tip our hat.” Wow! Look at Roger’s swell physique. There’s more, though, to his fame. He really is the tops” in sports; He’s helped win many a game. Under this Senior’s crew cut, Are found a lot of brains. We know that Estill will use them well. As true success he gains. He ' s seldom in the limelight, This Senior boy so straight and tall, But Mahlon’s pleasant, quiet ways Make him well liked by us all. She’s busy with many activities, A cheer leader for three years, too, In typing and shorthand she’s a whiz; We think Janet’s O. K., don’t you? She makes good grades and also plays A clarinet in the band. To Joyce we wish the best of luck; We think she’s really grand. To be a nurse is the ambition Of this Senior, Carol Jo Hart. Whatever the job or task may be, She is ready to do her part. Bob Hunter, our class photographer, Is known by all for his hair of red. He’s really a ' sport’ in his flashy blue Dodge; When he’s around the town ’s not dead. His ability in basketball, football, track Makes this Senior athlete a popular gent. He likes to sing in a boys’ quartet; Meet Harold Jabaay, our class president. Being president of the Student Council Really keeps Joyce Ann on the go. But in our class there couldn’t be found A person more capable, we know. You would really have to look a while To find someone as swell as Paul. He likes to read most anything, Though he doesn’t like Shakespeare at all. As Vinnie,” the colored maid, in our play, We thought Joann was really swell. As far as her love of school is concerned; From there she is sometimes AWOL. Here he comes, there he goes, Harold Kingma’s in town; In his little black Ford he will cruise. In school he’s quite peppy, ’cept in the last hour, For in government class he will snooze. To write a poem about myself Is one of the hardest things there is; Especially because, as you can see, At writing verse I am no whiz. Hear that gigle down the hall? We know it must be Joan. An artist, too, and she, for this Ability is known. Another athlete, who is known by all, Is captain of our basketball team. Just look at him go to town with that ball! Marvin is on the beam. Her first name is Carol, her last is Thornton, The singer of our class; She’s pretty and always ready for fun — A happy vivacious lass. We hope the ladder to Ed Totten’s success Will be a ladder that’s easy to climb. We all think he’s great in his clever routine Of acting out songs in pantomime. We, as classmates, do not know What is his planned vocation. Right now, though, Eddie has a job In Freddie’s filling station. He’s known to us as Skeeter, But his name is Norman Wright. Just give that guy a basketball, And he’s really dynamite. You’ve met us all, now we have to go — For Commencement we are yearning. But I’m sure that some will shed a tear, As we leave these halls of learning. The most quiet girl in the Senior class, (Quite refreshing we must admit) Is Ruth Terborg, who is always willing, In every job, to do her bit. By Judith Kingma Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of 1952, though failing in mental ability, can still remember a few of our good and bad times, which we do hereby will, with the remainder of our estate, to our, probably ungrateful, underclassmen. Anna Mae Belstra, in a generous state of mind, wills her long blond hair to Wilma Hoffman. It looks like some changes will have to be made. Fred Boissy, in a moronic state of mind, wills his perfectly good seat in the study hall to Stanley Krucek. We hope you get more use out of it than he did. Barbara Bennema, in a careless state of mind, wills her driving ability to Pat Corbet. We bet you won’t be able to get a driver’s license. Doris Coberly, in an exhausted state of mind, wills all her nights spent at school to Joyce Dug- gins. May she also recommend a rest home. Boger DeYoung, in a carefree state of mind, wills his athletic ability to John DeKock. We wish you the best of luck with vour new assignment. Estill Duggins, in an intelligent state of mind, wills his report card and his penmanship to Leonard Swart. You may need an interpreter if you carry the penmanship through. Mahlon Grevenstuk, in a thoughtful state of mind, wills his height to Frank Cross. Have you ever tried Hadacol? Janet Hammerton, in a reluctant state of mind, wills her position as Editor of the Annual to Laura Mae Evers. We hope you have as much success as she had. Joyce Hamstra, in a regretful state of mind, wills all the good times she had at DeMotte, to Shirley Wiers. We hope you enjoy them. Carol Hart, in a self-conscience state of mind, wills all her vice-president positions to Lillian King- ma. You are really going to be busy. Bob Hunter, in a sympathetic state of mind, wills his way with girls to John Tomczak. You can take the course in 10 easy lessons. Harold Jabaay, in a generous state of mind, wills his government book to Don Ptacek. We hope you get something out of it. Joyce Jabaay, in a genial state of mind, wills her personality and her ability to skip school without getting caught to Dorothy Wilke. Paul Kaluf, in a flashy state of mind, wills his ability to argue to Nancy Knynsberg. Don’t be too hard on your classmates. Joann Kaper, in a rather dubious state of mind, wills her ability to skip school without getting caught and her debate notes to Janice Hoffman. Hope you do better than she did. Harold Kingma, in a reckless state of mind, wills his Ford and his cheerful personality to Jack Hixon. You’d better junk your ’37 Chevy. Judith Kingma, in a rhythmic state of mind, wills her music talent to Marilyn Raster. No hard feel- ings? Joan Scott, in a blissful state of mind, wills her artistic talent and her giggle to Marilyn Schoon- veld. Looks like you will have a cheerfid clas s. Marvin Terpstra, in an ambitious state of mind, wills his ability to be calm and reserved at all times to Bob Peterson. Carol Thornton, in a joyful state of mind, wills her ability to catch a man to Mary Bacon. Drop around sometime and she’ll tell you just how to proceed. Ruth Terborg, in a sentimental state of mind, wills all her old beat up accordian music to Marian Bels- tra. Will we have another Contino? Ed Totten, in a humorous state of mind, wills all his corny jokes to John Tomczak. Ed White, in a drowsy state of mind, wills his ability to sleep in class to John DeKock. Pleasant dreams, John. Norman Wright, in a happy state of mind, wills his cheerful personality to Frank Gross. Do you think he needs it? To the Juniors, as a whole, we will all our old Christmas decorations. To the Sophomores, we will our quiet study halls, poor teachers. To the Freshmen, we will the fun we had ini- tiating you into high school. May you have as much fun in ’55. To Mr. Hission, we will a chemistry class that doesn’t break all his equipment. To Mr. Stangle, we will a bicycle so he can get from one place to another faster. To Miss Rolling, we will an art class with talent. To Miss Griffith, we will a secretary and an hour and a half shorthand class that meets everyday. To Miss Beanblossom, we will a home ec. class that can read directions. To Mr. Diettert, we will a government class that knows a few political terms. To Mr. Champion, we will a shop all furnished with the equipment needed. To Mr. Moolenaar, we will a chorus that can har- monize. To Mr. Jones, we will a basketball team that will win the Sectional. By Doris Coberly Class Prophecy The following items are a brief summary of important news events in 1962, ten years since the DeMotte Indians of ’52 graduated. Critics raved about paintings drawn by Joan Scott and Doris Coberly, which are to be hung in the Metropolitan Art Gallery. One critic said, “Since we can’t find the artists, we’ll hang their paintings.” Fred Boissy was re-elected by a landslide to his position of assistant to the assistants’ assistant dog catcher while I was elected governor. Janet Hammerton and Carol Thornton have enrolled in the Society for the Prevention of Old Maids, a prominent social organization. Doctor Skeeter” Wright and nurse Judith Kingma discovered a new miracle drug used for the cure and prevention of ingrown toenails. Two secretaries, Anna Mae Belstra and Joann Kaper, at the Hand-in- Lap Insurance Agency have received a large inheritance from distant relatives who lived in San Francisco. Barbara Bennema’s search for a fellow missionary in the jungles of Africa was climaxed when she found her in a native village. Her first words were, Miss Terborg, I presume.” The noted speed demon Bob Hunter has won the stock car race again at Indianapolis. This makes the fifth consecutive year he has won that event. Harold Kingma received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the exacting art of ditch digging, the only degree of its kind ever given. Coach DeYoung is slightly irritable after his basketball team lost to Coach Duggins’ speedy five 103 to 0, for the 501 consecutive game. Prosperous undertakers Marvin Terpstra and Eddie White startled the Undertakers Union with their new lay away plan and with the invention of an adjustable coffin, which accommodates all size bodies. They’re so busy they ask you to order your coffin a year in advance. Harold Jabaay is the new television comic whose antics have brought him international fame. Joyce Jabaay has received the Noble Award in science for the discovery of a process of isolating sugar from coffee. Paul Kaluf and Mahlon Grevenstuk have opened a new restaurant on the Main Street of DeMotte, called the Gravy.” Carol Jo Hart and Joyce Hamstra have recently returned from Europe where they toured all countries there. They will begin teaching again at DeMotte College in a short while. This has been a brief hopscotch of headlines in 1962. We beat them 71 l 2 to 59 l 2. On April 25 DeMotte held a triangular meet with Kouts and Hebron. We emerged victorious with a score of 77 followed by Hebron with 47 and Kouts with 27. In another triangular meet held at DeMotte on the 27th of April DeMotte scored the third victory of the season. They had 77 1 2, fol- lowed by Fair Oaks with 53 and Tefft with 43 1 2. Running up against stiff competition in the Rensselaer Relays, we placed last. Although there were only six teams entered, there was a three way tie for first place between Rens- selare, Knox and Kentland. On May 4 we journeyed to Wheatfield for the ten team K.V.T.M. Our football teams this year combined brawn, brains, team spirit, and individual initiative to produce two of the best teams ever to play for DeMotte. The Varsity and Freshmen-Sophomore teams broke the school record for a season’s wins by chalk- ing up seven wins against two defeats. The varsity had a record of five wins against two defeats. This record is due en- tirely to their courageous and indominitable spirit which was illustrated on one occasion when they overcame a 12-0 half-time defi- cit and went on to win 29-12. Ffope for future good teams is also alive because of the activity of the Freshmen- Sophomore team. They played only two games but won both, thus showing probable football strength for the next two-three years. INDIVIDUAL SCORING 0 NAME T.D. P.A.T.
