FUTURE TEACHERS The Future Teachers of America is a national organization and the official name of the Deming Chapter is The J. Cloyd Miller F.T.A. Club. It was ,named for Mr. Miller who was superintendent of schools at the time it was founded. Its colors are red, white and black and itis represented by an official symbol, a shield bearing a torch with a red flame. The purposes of the F.T.A. are to encourage the interest of students in a possible teaching career and to acquaint them with the opportunities it presents. At meetings, skits were given, reports presented and occasionally members heard a guest speaker. One guest was Mrs. Gahagan who talked to the club in January. During the year the F.T.A. carried out many activities. Annually a book on teach- ing is purchased and presented to the D.H.S. library. A special assembly is given in April honoring all teachers. It is also a duty of the F.T.A. to assist at open-house and to serve as guides. Frank Smyer had the champion steer, and Sammy Ruebush the reserve champion steer, Jose Pastran, a graduate in 1959 showed the Champion hog. and Nlervyn lvertz the champion lamb. Two members showed champion hogs at the State Fair in Albuquerque in Septem- ber. Angel Gomez. a student at New Mexico State University showed a Champion Duroc and Danny Trujillo, a DHS Senior showed the reserve champion Duroc. The boys that feed animals for the fair buy their animals from the FFA farm or farmers who have animals to sell: the animals are purchased in May and fattened for six months. The boys that have calves feed them for eleven months. They buy their animals i11 November. New members of the FFA. the- Ureenhands. elected David Moore president, Carl Voc-ale rice president. Driver Training lnstructor and sponsor of last year's Traf- t fm fic Safety Club, this yearss Traffic Safety Club got underway at the beginning of the year. The various offices were held by Reggie Richey. presidentg Jack Gray, vice president: Sylvia Mathis, secretary-treasurerg and Jim Nabours, sergeant-at-arms. The projects were to help with the parking lot and to try to cut down high speed driving around the school area.
