George Tigner Fall of 759 saw the return of George Tigner to Deming High lo begin his career as Vocational Ag teacher after his graduation from Xew Mexico State University. He is a native of Deming and a graduate of DHS. He replaced Leon Wagley whose resignation was accepted at the end of last year. Nlr. Tigner directed the projects of FFA boys on their own farm and at the Deming: High School Ag farm. Headquarters of the Ag department were moved from the old B building to the new wing of the High School. Well. if you can meet all the requirements. you migzht become next year's lucky girl. as Pat Treadwell, DHS Junior did this year. The Sweetheart must have a real interest in FFA since she is sometimes called upon to represent the organ- ization at public appearances. Then too. she must be able to compete in the State High School Rodeo and Queen contests. Pat. who was awarded her prized FFA Sweet- heart jacket at the annual venison fry, did a fine job as fashion shown commentator at the FFA Assembly, Page 93

Sammy Ruebush and Juno Guaderrama, alternate!-represented the state of New Wexico in the National Meats Judging contest held at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. Compet- ing with 42 other state judging teams, the Dem- ing FFA Chapter received the bronze emblem award and each contestant received a bronze medal. George Tigner, FFA sponsor who took the boys to Kansas City, was very proud of the team after learning that they had placed third in the nation. Other highlights of the Kansas City trip were the National FFA Convention. the American Royal, American Royal Parade, American Royal Corona- tion Rall. American Royal Horse show and Live- stock Show. Frank Smyer had the champion steer, and Sammy Ruebush the reserve champion steer, Jose Pastran, a graduate in 1959 showed the Champion hog. and Nlervyn lvertz the champion lamb. Two members showed champion hogs at the State Fair in Albuquerque in Septem- ber. Angel Gomez. a student at New Mexico State University showed a Champion Duroc and Danny Trujillo, a DHS Senior showed the reserve champion Duroc. The boys that feed animals for the fair buy their animals from the FFA farm or farmers who have animals to sell: the animals are purchased in May and fattened for six months. The boys that have calves feed them for eleven months. They buy their animals i11 November. New members of the FFA. the- Ureenhands. elected David Moore president, Carl Voc-ale rice president. Bobby Oney seretary, Walker Ruebush treasurer, Lorence Ingram reporter, Donnie Hays sentinel. Bobby Pastran, Freddie Walker. Joey Tulk, George Harrison and James Underwood were the other Greenhands.
