Soon after school began. the Pep Club began preparing a half-time show with the band for the first football game of the season. All during the following weeks the Pep Club was very busy working on the half-time shows and preparing for parade marching whivh they did at the Wlestern College Homecoming Parade. 'llri-State Pair Parade and the tradi- tional Ulfl Yllimers Parade. Except for the State Senii-Final gaine at Aztev. the Pep Club attended all uf the out-of-town football granies. The motto of the vlub is. 'l'l1e first step is all the hard- er. and spevtators ran say that the Pep Club girls Illllllt' that fn-st step look easy. Nliss Shafer replaced Nliss lrwin. last years sponsor of the Pep Club. The lettermen this vear have been more active than in previous years and have earned money to help pav for the football scoreboard bought several vears ago bv sponsoring an enchilada supper which brought a profit of 515913. 'lihey planned to give a banquet and formal with the remaining money they accumulated from the presentation of a well-attended sock-hop. The officers showed much ingenuity in the money-making campaigns that were so successful. President Manuel De La 0. vice president Tommy Pearson. and secretarv Lily Gomez are not the only ones to be commended on their initiative. The members have expressed their loyalty by their participation in all activities which the D-Club has sponsored during the year. Page 85

Barbara Harrelson, Janette Su- pak, and Mary Lou Vocale, 'were elected on the basibof' cheerleading ability. scholarship, citizen- ship, classification, industry, originality, and creativity. The DHS Cheerleaders immediately decided that it would be of value to attend a summer workshop at the University of Oklahoma. While in attendance at this five-day school. the cheerleaders learned much about planning pep rallies, skits, pom-pom routines. and tumbling. f 'ww , 'za lf,,3gMr vw, f 5 -1 'A f2fZt.f,,,,, ,V 5 , ,-:,f1.-,f, p.p-h -5.5-,,,., - H Although the expense of the trip was not provided ' 'pr' 2' - N 14 f by the school budget, the cheerleaders made their own financial arrangements so they could attend. However, without the sponsorship of Mrs. W. W. Burt, the trip would have been impossible. The football season began in September. To go along with this, the cheerleaders had pep rallies with skits. yells. talks by coaches, and band numbers before every game. They also hung posters, sold D- Club ribbons, decorated goal posts, performed with the band during halftime shows, and gave skits over the public address system.
