HAROLD COIFI..-XNIJ JOHNNY SMITH MIKE l'fXYl'DN HOD JUNES NOHNIXN PEIAYU Center tluard Forward Forward ffcnter BASKETBALL Highlighting the l959-60 Deming basketball season was a surprise first place win in the annual Wlestern Invitational Tournament by a Wildcat team that was seeded last in the six learn field prior to the tournament. Victories over Cobre. '16-40g Cliff, 16-31, and top-seeded Silver City Weste1'ii. 55--13. soon dispelled any doubts that the Wildcats were the top team in the tournament. as acknowledged by New Nlexico Western College president J. Cloyd Miller after the championship game when he awarded the Wiltlcats the first place trophy. The ,Cats were sparked in the tournament, as they were most of the year. by the jump-shooting of Joe Estrada fthe highest scorer in the tournamentl, the arching set-shots of nirmando Alba. the rebounding of big Henery Pacheco, the driving lay-ups by David Hand, and the 'ifancy-dan dribbling of little l'aul Pedraza. Although getting a late start because of the prolonged football season. the Wildcats. under criach Ray Canady in his second year, hit their stride early in the season and surpassed their poor record of last year. They really hit their stride just before the Christmas vacation, starting a win streak that lasted for six games, their best of the year. The 'Cats had their troubles near the end of their season schedule. due partly to illness among the players and inconsistency in hitting the basket, losing some vital district contests to Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Wlestern and Gadsden. At the end of February, the team boasted an ll-ltl record. The Pep Club in addition to providing a nucleus of the cheering section, took charge of the concession stand, while the band kept the air filled with music at most of the basketball games. The cheerleaders did their best to instill school spirit all season long, urging fans to come and support their team. HENRY PACHECO PALI.
