Richard Nash's play, Wllhe Rainmakerf, has the distinction of being unique in itself. The female lead. and. by the way. the only female part in the entire play. was portrayed hy not one. hut two. girls. The opening night Retha Ledhetter was seen in the role of Lizzie. a plain girl searching for the right man to make her a woman. and the following night Yina Dane listened to the advice of H. C.. her father. played hy Nelson Welch, Jr.. and her hrothers Jim and Noah. played by Shelby Phillips and james Hodgkins. as they explained to l.izzie the art of catching a manfi The laughter of the audience was heard as the sheriff. Rohhy Canon. was trying to persuade his depu- ty. lfddie Stevens. to become the owner of a Nclawgfi Terry Sherman. in the title role of Starhuck. the rainmaker. was challenged lay the flurry family to luring rain. when the rain fell it was as much a surprise to Starlvuck as it was to the others. whose dis- helief turned to happiness in the closing minutes of the play. Backstage. Fred Whitaker and Joyce Floyd wiped the makeup from their hands. Skippy Steven flicked the switch that caused the lights to go on and off. and l,arry Flynn. sound effects, relaxed as the curtain came down signifying the end of the play. The director. lid Leupold. and the cast were rewarded for their efforts by the applause of the audience. and the gruclling practice sessions came to an ahrupt halt: T50 people had seen Nllhe Rainmakeru and the Senior class was S230 richer. P Y FUTURE NURSES CLUB Deming High girls interested in learning about careers in nursing and other health fields joined the Ifuture Nurses Club. The school nurse. Mrs. Violet Johns. was the sponsor. and was responsible for organizing the club 4 years ago. During the year l95'J-60 there were 20 nienihers and they met every third week of the month in the nurses office. Due to the great amount of time spent on the immunization program. Mrs. Johns was unable to have a very active group the first semester. Their only project was collecting food for the needy at Thanks- giving. One of the highlights of their year was having Tiny Van lfwijk. the foreign student from Holland. talk to them about her trip to England to study first aid.
