FUTURE TEACHERS The Future Teachers of America is a national organization and the official name of the Deming Chapter is The J. Cloyd Miller F.T.A. Club. It was ,named for Mr. Miller who was superintendent of schools at the time it was founded. Its colors are red, white and black and itis represented by an official symbol, a shield bearing a torch with a red flame. The purposes of the F.T.A. are to encourage the interest of students in a possible teaching career and to acquaint them with the opportunities it presents. At meetings, skits were given, reports presented and occasionally members heard a guest speaker. One guest was Mrs. Gahagan who talked to the club in January. During the year the F.T.A. carried out many activities. Annually a book on teach- ing is purchased and presented to the D.H.S. library. A special assembly is given in April honoring all teachers. Q .gii T-If F ,Ty Librarian Mrs. Lucy Ewan Brenda studies but is ready to check out books anytime. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Mrs. Lucy Ewan, the new librarian had twenty-four girls working in the library during each class period. Four new magazines were received. To make research work easier, a girl was as- signed permanently to the job of securing the magazines for the students when they needed them to do a term paper or some other special report. Eleven records were bought with the English department in mind primarily. A ninety volume set of law books. outlining law procedure fully. was presented by Mr. Bert Newland to the library. The school was happy to receive these books. This was the first year the library assistants were not organized as a club. They did not elect officers or hold regular meetings. The girls were glad of having had the opportunity to work in the library. They felt privileged in knowing the inside storyu of how a library operates.
