FUTURE TEACHERS The Future Teachers of America is a national organization and the official name of the Deming Chapter is The J. Cloyd Miller F.T.A. Club. It was ,named for Mr. Miller who was superintendent of schools at the time it was founded. Its colors are red, white and black and itis represented by an official symbol, a shield bearing a torch with a red flame. The purposes of the F.T.A. are to encourage the interest of students in a possible teaching career and to acquaint them with the opportunities it presents. At meetings, skits were given, reports presented and occasionally members heard a guest speaker. One guest was Mrs. Gahagan who talked to the club in January. During the year the F.T.A. carried out many activities. Annually a book on teach- ing is purchased and presented to the D.H.S. library. A special assembly is given in April honoring all teachers. It is also a duty of the F.T.A. to assist at open-house and to serve as guides. FOOTl3ALL Although the Wildcat's '59 football season was begun by a disappointing loss to Cathedral. the Wild- cats under direction of coaches Rusty Hofacket and Ray Canady teamed up and strengthened their line against their opponents and came back with six victories under their belt to win the District 3-A Cham- pionship. This was won after just slightly slipping by T. or C. during a game in which the half-hearted spirit of the Wildcats almost caused disaster. This game was won by only one penetration. The defeat of Cobre by the Wildcats cinched the district for the team and from there the going was rough. Page 106 R . Victories over Cobre. '16-40g Cliff, 16-31, and top-seeded Silver City Weste1'ii. 55--13. soon dispelled any doubts that the Wildcats were the top team in the tournament. as acknowledged by New Nlexico Western College president J. Cloyd Miller after the championship game when he awarded the Wiltlcats the first place trophy. The ,Cats were sparked in the tournament, as they were most of the year. by the jump-shooting of Joe Estrada fthe highest scorer in the tournamentl, the arching set-shots of nirmando Alba. the rebounding of big Henery Pacheco, the driving lay-ups by David Hand, and the 'ifancy-dan dribbling of little l'aul Pedraza. Although getting a late start because of the prolonged football season. the Wildcats. under criach Ray Canady in his second year, hit their stride early in the season and surpassed their poor record of last year. They really hit their stride just before the Christmas vacation, starting a win streak that lasted for six games, their best of the year. The 'Cats had their troubles near the end of their season schedule. due partly to illness among the players and inconsistency in hitting the basket, losing some vital district contests to Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Wlestern and Gadsden. At the end of February, the team boasted an ll-ltl record. The Pep Club in addition to providing a nucleus of the cheering section, took charge of the concession stand, while the band kept the air filled with music at most of the basketball games. The cheerleaders did their best to instill school spirit all season long, urging fans to come and support their team. HENRY PACHECO PALI. CATS UPSET TOURNEY FOES The Deming Wildcats under the direction of Coach Ray Canady came out ahead of all tourney foes to win the Western High School Invitational Basketball Tourna- ment. Early in January, the upsetting: Wildcats. who were rated sixth in the tournament. shocked the basketball fans by defeating in successive games the Cobre Indians '16-710: Cliff Cowboys '16-3lg and Silver City Colts 55-13. to win the tournament and take home a first place trophy. The win was important to the Wlildcats beeause in the past only one Yvildcat basketball team 11955-'56l has been able to win a basketball tournament.
