% In Memory of James O. Cracrafi Submitted for your approval: an incredible group of Seniors, a class which has created a new meaning for the word party. Enter a world where life begins at 3:20 Friday afternoon and ends at 8:20 Monday morning; where swelled heads and Senioritis run rampant. Beware, for you are about to witness THE CLASS OF '88! It began in a small town, in a small way. Quietly, a new freshman class entered Deming High School in 1984. Spirited, Talented. Hard workers. Hard partiers. For some reason, we were different from all the classes before. We weren't freshman, thank God, we were ninth graders. Like a bottle or a can dropped in a pond, this beginning sent out ripples. Everywhere, teachers and students were talking about us. What would we do next? To what new highs would spirit rise under our domination? The ripples spread. Summer came and went. Instead of ninth graders, we became sophomores: more experienced, even more spirited. Again, we stunned our teachers. Again, we showed what partying really means ... and again, and again, and again. The ripples grew. Junior year: Algebra II and Advanced Biology, harder work, bigger parties. Now we were leaders. Instead of going to parties, we were throwing them. Take the Prom for instance, an incredible night when we celebrated into the early hours of the morning. Need we say more? At last, the ripples became tidal waves, huge enormous tidal waves: Seniors! Definition time: Seniors — students with awesome spirit, fantastic talents (you wouldn't believe some of the things we could do), and one heck of a demolition derby team. Now our parties were bigger and more often than ever. What? It's Tuesday? heck, let's have a party!!! Deadly Senioritis set in, but even so, we got through Chemistry, History, and even the dreaded research paper. Somehow, we managed to make it, even though most of the time it was only to get to the weekend. A lot of things have changed since the first year. We started out as ninth graders and made it to Seniors, losing some innocence along the way, but gaining experience and memories. And we've left some memories behind us, too. We'll always be remembered by our friends, by our teachers, and by all the classes to come. We were The Class of 1988, and we were dam good! fau nyu ). rrlrant I Seniors eniord eniord Illi.UI. .%UHS HoU flurt eniord s 'pondord our flo our Sponsors, iif i mufti fib • to Say l imiL you for your help ami yuitlam r, am! PARTY! With Mrs. King and Mrs. Allison as sponsors, it isn't hard to believe that the Class of '88 was always doing something. We probably had more fund Raisers than any senior class in Deming's history; pizza party dances, the womanless beauty pageant, a carwash, the list goes on without end. Of course, while work has its rewards, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And we did play. We always found something to celebrate, and it never took very long. If all else failed, we could always celebrate the day of the week. What, it's Tuesday ... Every special occasion demanded a classy social at the Allison residence. The class also experienced the rewards of Christmas caroling at Mrs. King's house, then shared by a special foreign friend. And the '87 Prom? Never Say Goodbye was a smash, out-classed by none. Our senior year brought with it much more than just hanging around. Grad Nite at King's Island was the perfect example of what we could do when we put our minds to something. In the spirit of all of the food we have fixed for other people over the years, we finally decided it was time to serve ourselves; and we did just that with a Senior Cookout at the ballpark the day after prom. With everything we did, one would begin to wonder how much time we actually spent in the classroom. Even with our advanced knowledge of mathematical concepts, we couldn't begin to calculate that. We did take every available opportunity to enhance the educational process, even if it reauired acts of generosity to suspicious chemistry teachers. Clever? No, just a heavy case of senioritis. Senor Trip '88 April 8, 5:40 PM — It's almost here. 5:42 — Luggage nearly loaded. 5:45 — Signs displaying VJhen in Doubt... PARTY!” theme put on bus. 5:47 — Tension mounts. 5:49 — Traditional picture taken in front of bus; no major injuries. 5:52r— Board bus. 5:55 — ”1 can't get out of the @ $% bathroom!” 5:56 — Where's my golf clubs?” 5:57 — No Billy Reese, you can't drive!” 5:58 — Come on mom, get off the bus!” 5:59 — All the work of the last 4 years is about to pay off. 6:00 — WE'RE OUT A' HERE!” Our itinerary included the usual Florida tour: Disney World, EPCOT, Silver Springs, and Daytona. Of course, every trip has its own special moments to remember, or forget. We all recall that one person had terrible trouble with flies, and another had sleeping problems. Even though the Daytona wind practically blew a door off its hinges, that ocean breeze wasn't too strong to be enjoyed with only the bare essentials. However, the climate may have been unfavorable for some Tonk players. Of course, responsible seniors recalled that this was to be an educational trip of some sort, and spent time practicing advanced mathematics and conserving water. With all the excitement and things to do, there was hardly time for some to go to the bathroom. On a more serious note, the Class of '88 came back from Florida with much more than a collection of bad jokes; we returned with great memories that will last a lifetime, from the moment we pulled out Friday evening, to the journey home which caught Mrs. King with shaving cream in hand. Well, everybody is entitled to a little fun, especially on their birthday. Home, Sweet Home?” Of course. Prom '88: Just One Night” The sound poured out of the gym. D. J.'d by WEBN's own Wild Man Walker, the Junior Senior Prom 1988 rocked into the night. The spirit flowed as the theme, “Just One Night by Triumph, played into the hearts and minds'of everyone. The elected royalty, the Queen, Valerie Sweeney, and her King, John Mark Askin, and their court, Whitney Overbey, Steve Murray, Karen Staggs, and Mark Mann, left us all with a moment to remember. And they danced. The party atmosphere carried on as we celebrated throughout the night. The next morning, the seniors went to breakfast together at Ponderosa, and then cooked-out at the ballpark that afternoon. Our compliments to the Class of '89. It may have been just one night, but we all made the most of it. ? -r Last Day of School: “Senioritis Run Wild! Seniors in a classroom was a rare scene. Most took every opportunity to leave, maybe in search of some element of finality, or mauve just some Kodak moments. Whatever the case, we all made.the most of it. The class was excused from lunch at school, and allowed to so to town to Mac's Place or some other area destination to eat. When we returned to Deming in the afternoon, of course it was still there, but the atmosphere was somehow different. Our last day together as a high school class was almost over. Needless to say, we made the most of it. A lot of the class was drawn to the 3rd floor hallway, and even into Dalejan's office. Maybe it was his magnetic personality. Maybe it's another one of those unsolved mysteries. From there, the class paraded throughout the school, chanting various senior slogans, and making sure we shared our spirit with everyone. This was highlighted bu a surprise — attack — cheer in the Board of Ed. office. The day was almost over, but it wouldn't end without the inevitable water fights. And then we left to go our own ways, but we'll always be together, the Class of '88 forever. 27 G R A D U A T I O N Graduation '88 included the usual three nights of activities, but somehow Class Night really set the Class of '88 apart and showed just what we felt and how close we are. We sang We've Had the Time of Our Lives'' and knew that while our great high school years were over, we still had many good times to come. Valedictorian, Rob Linville, and Salutatorian, Karla Fralix, broke tradition, as the class is known for doing, and gave a combined address, based on a few memories that told the story of how we grew to be so close. The night was highlighted with a giant slide show, accompanied by Valerie Sweeney singing Friends. The words were heart-felt, that a lifetime's not too long to share as friends. Thanks to everyone who helped to get us this far, especially our sponsors, Mrs. Donnie King and Mrs. Karla Allison. And until we all meet again . .. 29 Statistics Is It True? From the Desk of the Editor This yearbook is a celebration, a toast to the Class of 1988: to seniorilis, to the spirit, to the attitude, to the drive, to the parties, to the night, to that special feeling of being a member of this class, to making it together, ‘to us; may xoe be together in our hearts forever, i nis is an occasion for celebration which demands the best. Of course, good wine takes time. Cheers! We've come a long way. We’ve had our share of the good times and the bad times. We always made it through, sometimes a little ragged and tired, and sometimes ivith a new energy and drive to go on to something bigger. Maybe it was a bigger fund raiser; maybe it was a bigger party; maybe it was something never done before, but the beginning of a tradition. Now we’ve made it to graduation, perhaps the biggest goal of all, or perhaps the biggest party of all. Graduation is a major turning point, but it isn't the end. Some say graduation is the dawn of a new day in our lives. The rising sun brings with it a new beginning, a time to go forward, a chance for dreams to come true. But before the dawn comes, the sun must first set. Let the night belong to us. R. L., j With a 22-9 win loss record, the 1987-88 Black Devils were considered one of the winningest teams in Deming's history. The Black Devils had many great games with teams such as Mason County, Simon Kenton, Nicholas County, and, of course, Bracken County. Many of the Devil's victories resulted from 4th quarter comebacks, earning them the name Cardiac Kids, but the highlight of the season was the 38th District Tournament held at the Devils Dome. The Devils came up with an easy victory over Augusta in the 1st round of the District Tournament, and were then ready to battle for the championship title against their biggest rival, Bracken County. The Devils easily defeated the Polar Bears with a final score of 77-61, and knew they had done their job when they were overcome by the roar of the standing room only crowd as the announcer declared the Deming Black Devils the 1988 38th District Champs. 34 35 GIRLS' VARSITY, Standing left to right: Coach Larry Allison, Asst. The Denting Lady Devils finished with a very successful year. Although the Lady Devils had their ups and downs, they ended the season with a 19-11 win loss record. There were many major events which made the year so successful. One was winning the Estill County Tournament. The Lady Devils defeated both Lee County and Estill County to capture this tournament title. In the Lions Lady Devil Christmas Classic, the Lady Devils finished as consolation winners. Some big games for the Lady Devils were such teams as Bourbon County, St. Patrick, Fleming County, and Mason County. In 38th District Tournament action, the Lady Devils won in the 1st round with a big defeat over Augusta. Then they became the 38th District runners-up in the championship game against Bracken County. Since the Lady Devils will be losing all five starters, next year looks like a time for rebuilding. Under the direction of Mrs. Susan Henson there were 34 members. The chapter participated in star events, (Students taking action with recognition). All participants were very successful in their ratings. Our activities focused on the elementary in helping those students with nutrition. The chapter also worked with the Robertson County Senior Citizens. The chapter had two regional officers; Whitney Overbey — Treasurer; Sarah Cracraft — Honor Roll Chairman. The chapter was also very excited as they traveled to Louisville for the yearly state meeting, where Whitney Overbey was elected State Parliamentarian for the 1988-89 school year. The chapter would like to thank Mrs. Henson for all of her hard work and dedication, without her, the year would have not been a success. Officers for the 1987-88 school year were as follows: Tawnya Berry, Treva Gifford Rachael Walters, Karla Fralix, Becky Hedges, Susan Howard, Valerie Sweeney, Crystal Carpentar, Whitney Overbey, Sarah Cracraft, Karen Staggs, fenny Jones, Lesley Leet, Deanna McCord, Amber Sweeney, Jodie England, Linaka Clark.
