The highlight of rhe Academic Team season was rhe District Governor's Cup Competition where the Creative Expression squad won first place. Store Deportment of Education personnel visited the district to serve os consultants regarding strategies to improve ottendonce. Consequently, school attendance wos emphasized throughout the year with greater community awareness of rhe importance of attendance, with competitions between homerooms, various weekly contests in the elementary, and with recognitions to perfect ottendonce coverage, food certificates ond end-of-the year certificates. For the first time since 1982, the Lions-Lody Devil Christmas Classic wos held. After defeating Rocelond ond Pendleton Co. In early tournament action, the team lost to Bourbon Co. in the semi-finals. In 38th district action, the Lody Devils earned o bid to the regional tournament by defeating the Pendleton County Lody Cots. They hove been focusing the attention of the elementary students, parents and community members on the growing problem of drug abuse. Members were involved in o very successful program colled D.E.A.D. — Deming Elementary Against Drugs. Poster competitions, coloring book contests, ploys, puppet shows and rapping about drugs ond their detrimental effects on the individual hove been activities that hove caused o stir. Other events in which the chapter hos been actively involved hove been regular visits to the Senior Citizens of Robertson County, performing ploys ond reading poems. At Halloween, o party was enjoyed by oil. Students ond guests come in costume to ploy gomes ond join in o Halloween meol. An entire doy of gomes, readings, ond fellowship was enjoyed on Valentine's Doy. The community blood drive was also mode possible through the efforts of Deming FHA members.
