ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS High school sports heros traditionally receive the trophies, the media coverage, and the local respect. However, those students who excel in their various specialties have often achieved something which will prove more valuable in later life, and as America asks more of its schools, they will get more of the credit. This year's Deming superstar would have to be John Bums, who not only was senior class valedictorian, but won his third straight spelling bee and earned his A's despite faking the school's most difficult classes. The achievers would also include juniors Susan Hedges and Eve Overbey, sophomore Beth Linville. freshman Mary Helen Insko, eighth graders Julie Douglas and Leann Leet, and seventh graders Karla Fralix and Rob Linville. As the photos on these pages and on activity spreads throughout the book show, many others excel in special areas even if they don't make straight A's.
