Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1983 volume:

DEMING DEVIL A NEW LOOK . . . Traditions are important, especially in small schools, rural communities and yearbooks. Out as technology rushes forward, change is important, too. We have made some changes in this year's annual which we hope you will enjoy. We tried to run all photos larger. We used fewer posed group pictures and more candids, except in cases where coaches or sponsors strongly opposed the idea. We tried to provide your favorite teams and activities more coverage; in almost all cases their space has been expanded from one page to two. We used more captions under photos, so when you open the book 10 or 20 years in the future and your memory has dimmed, you will be able to identify the people. We added color candids to the senior section, and short articles to team and group coverage. Recognizing academic skills and knowledge as the main purpose of each school year, we gave achievers in those areas the same coverage as clubs and teams. Spelling bee, science fair, essay and debate competition are covered for the first time. Finally, we gave you a fable of contents to help you more quickly find your favorite person or group as you return to the book again and again. There were other changes we would have liked to have mode, and not every thing we did worked as well as we would have preferred. Next year's staff can try to improve on our work just as we tried to improve on last year's. And if they continue some of the ideas introduced in this book, those ideas will someday become traditions, too. All things considered, we enjoyed working on the 1983 Devil and are pleased with the finished product. We hope you agree. (Photos from top to bottom) 1. EdItor-in-Chief Gwen Ptott. 2. The seventh grade girls dominated the intramural basketball tournament. Junior high English classes added current films E.T. and Something Wicked to their literary studies. An unusually mild winter caused few days missed from school, but a March flu epidemic shut it down for a week. And UK basketball coach Joe Hall spoke at a Deming pep rally. . What was once a mere weekend in Washington (D.C.) has gradually been extended, and in 1976 was switched to Florida. This year, a one-day Bermuda cruise and a stop at St. Augustine was added to the ever growing schedule. Although it takes over a year to raise money for. and is an exhausting experience, every senior continues to agree the trip is a once in a lifetime memory. 12 (Photos clockwise from lower right) 1. However, those students who excel in their various specialties have often achieved something which will prove more valuable in later life, and as America asks more of its schools, they will get more of the credit. This year's Deming superstar would have to be John Bums, who not only was senior class valedictorian, but won his third straight spelling bee and earned his A's despite faking the school's most difficult classes. The achievers would also include juniors Susan Hedges and Eve Overbey, sophomore Beth Linville. freshman Mary Helen Insko, eighth graders Julie Douglas and Leann Leet, and seventh graders Karla Fralix and Rob Linville. As the photos on these pages and on activity spreads throughout the book show, many others excel in special areas even if they don't make straight A's. Gary McKinney, who had formerly directed Maysville St. Patrick and Christian County, was hired to succeed seven-year veteran Larry Allison. McKinney began with a summer program and stepped up the pace with an aggressive conditioning program once school opened. He had players running in the early mornings and after school. Unfortunately, the same problems remained which had plagued Allison. They included lack of depth, experience and size. As a result, Deming again finished below .500, and was eliminated In the first game of the District Tournament by Pendleton County. Lisa Case hits her jumper at Nicholas County. After several seasons as one of the region's top teams, Deming started all over In 1982-83 with a new coach and mostly new players. Steve Gifford, who once starred at Deming and returned to serve as assistant three years, moved up to head coach. Unfortunately, schools were looking for revenge at the same time Gifford was starting over with a new group of younger girls, and Deming suffered through a long, difficult season. By midyear, when the team had begun to close the experience gap, if was hit by key injuries. Deming lost in the first game of the District Tournament, but with almost all starters and reserves back, Gifford looked for a return to success in 83-84. 21 FOUNDATIONS FOR TEAMS (Photos, clockwise beginning top of this poge) 1 GIRLS' JUNIOR VARSITY - From Left. Sometime in the 70's, for reosons no longer known, by people now gone, Deming let its junior high bosketboll progrom die. This yeor, of the varsity level, that mistake was painfully obvious. With new coaches in both boys and girls programs, rebuilding the younger system has begun, as the photos on these pages show. But It was not easy. When a few talented players were found, they were pulled up to help the talent-short varsities. As a result, Deming's younger teams showed losing records. Still, with a large number of talented seventh graders back, and another incoming crop of 6th graders to help, both programs are hoping to turn things around in 1983-64. 23 BASEBALL TEAM BATTLES THE EASY WAY - Insteod of winding up his own orm, senior Greg Wolrers merely feeds the pitching mochlne os he ond the team practice indoors late March. More than half the schedule had to be cancelled and even some games which were played were soggy affairs with players Keeping one eye on threatening skies. Despite the weather, however, the season opened with wins over MMI and Williamstown. Deming odvanced to the second day of the conference tournament and played well even in losing. With only five seniors on the 15-man roster, Deming saw hopes of finally building a solid baseball foundation. BATTER UP - Mark Thomas eyes the next pitch os Greg King catches. 25 TENNIS TEAM CONTINUES Coach Rosalyn Thomas and her aggressive tennis program continued building one of the school's most successful extracurricular traditions during the 1982-63 year. The junior high team competed on its own September and October schedule, then joined the varsity for the regular spring season. Deming individuals and doubles teams picked up wins from schools as small as St. Patrick and as large as Harrison County. Troy Myers, one of only three seniors, severely sprained an ankle and was never really at full strength. That hurt Deming's chances at the regional title, but the team still earned considerable respect. With 12 veterans back, many still in eighth and ninth grade, Deming boasted several of the region's most promising younger stars. With depth and talent for a t least three seasons to come, the Devils looked like a definite regional championship contender. And Ms. Thomas was already working with fifth and sixth graders to ensure a continued stream of talent. SUCCESSFUL TRADITION 2. Sophomore Lynn Montgomery returns one dur-ing on April motch. 3. SCIENCE FAIR ATTRACTS Science competition has not traditionally been a Dealing strength, but in 1983 Ms. Davis and her students made significant efforts to change that. More students entered the science fair than ever before. Again held in the old gym, the event attracted an interested crowd and was judged by a panel of professionals. The winners advanced to regional competition at Morehead. where they quickly realized even greater projects would be needed by any students dreaming of the state science fair or a chance at national honors. However, one year ago no Deming student even competed at the regional, and with almost all its ‘‘superior” winners returning, Ms. Davis had hopes for much stronger future competion. 28 STUDENT ENTRIES (Photos, clockwise from bottom of opposite poge) 1. They held a Christmas Concert; provided a pep band at home basketball games; sponsored a combination chili supper, auction and concert; sent students on to advanced instruction at Morehead; received overall Superior Rankings in regional competition; and spent four days at Opryland in Nashville (Tenn.), where they performed in national competition and received a Good Rating. 7th GRADE BAND - From Left: Townyo Berry, Crystal Corpenter. After summer gymnastics training at Cynthiana and the usual pre-season practices, the girls and sponsors Sally Ray and Bobbie Collins were often scheduled five or six nights a week to cheer at all the junior high, junior varsity, girls' and boys' high school games. In 1980 posteason competition, however, all that work paid off. The girls' varsity cheerleaders took second place in the District. The boys' varsity cheerleaders won rhe District Championship for the first time in history and went on to place fifth in the Regional. Because Sally Ray was the regional representative to the state board of directors, the Deming girls also ushered and hosted one session of the boys state tournament at Rupp Arena and one session of the girls stare tournament at Eastern Kentucky University Coliseum in Richmond. Deming returned to debate competition this season for the first time in two decodes and finished with a very successful record. After a five week summer training program, evening practices once school began, and many weekends researching at the UK Libraries, the debaters hauled their evidence files and legal briefs to 12 tournaments which included up to 100 schools each. These included North Hardin. Scott County, Harrison Country, Bullitt Central, Henry Clay, Lexington Catholic and Louisville St. Xavier in Kentucky: and Indianapolis. Cincinnati. Dayton and Gatlinburg out of state. During these regular season tournaments the team competed in novice and junior varsity divisions since it lacked seniors and juniors. Deming won first place trophies at Scott County and Lexington Catholic and ended the regular season ranked second in the state among novice teams after losing in the finals at Louisville St. Xavier. Sophomore Beth Linville ranked first in the state among novice speakers. In postseason competition. 7th graders Rob Linville and Valerie Sweeney won the regional championship. and although they lost to Bowling Green in the state tournament, Rob won the outstanding speaker trophy. In high school, Deming moved up to varsity and surprised everyone by winning the regional title. It was the first time in history a Deming team had reached a varsity state tournament in any sport. Tina listens to closs night activities before delivering her salutatorian speech. Tina accepts the salutatorian award from principal Larry Kelsch during class night. Miss Tina Carpenter achieved the goal of becoming the 1963 salutatorian. Unfortunately, her picture and recognition was inadvertently left out of the yearbook. In addition to keeping her grades top notch, Tina also stood out in other areas. She served as honor roll chairman of the FHA. She was recognized classnight for awards in home ec, English. French I and II, science, and civics. Tina also served as one of the most efficient aides the school has had. In her limited spare time she volunteered her expertise os a typist and assisted many staff members with typewritten material they needed. Tina was very conscientious in her academics and in her concern for helping others. It is for these reasons the entire Robertson County School system commends Tina on her achievements. 1 Student Body Additions Johnny Allen. Heodstort Jamie Curfls, K Jason Curfls.
