Text from Pages 1 - 56 of the 1965 volume:

1965 Deming Devil The Senior Sponsor Speaks His Mind (Editor's note: It was the desire of the annual staff to dedicate the 1965 DEMING DEVIL to our beloved, hard-workingsponsor, Mr. Moore; but he would not hear of it. Instead, heagreed to speak his mind. ) Members of the Graduating Class: It has always been my contention that any accomplishment that is well done is a thing of beauty and art. This applies whether it is painting a beautiful picture, or keeping a neat, accurate set of books; writing a best selling novel, or building a piece of precision production machinery; composing classical music or maintaining a happy home life for one's children. The list could go on and on indefinitely. All too often people consider their jobs and the niche that they fill in life as inferior and commonplace. They feel that their activities are insignificant and unworthy of any notice. As a result, they take no pride in their work and do not put any special effort or thought into it. To these people life has little meaning. It becomes merely a routine existence and their everyday work is a drudgery. They get in a rut and because of their passive attitude, they are apt to stay there. On the other hand there are people who see the unusual in the most commonplace. They get a great deal of pleasure out of putting that something extra into everything they do. They give their job, regardless of how others see it, an air of importance and their work stands out because they are putting some effort and thought into it. These people may not always be satisfied with all their efforts, but more times than not, they can take justifiable pride in what they have done. The person who enjoys life and his work the most is the one who puts the most of himself and his personality into it. A work of art is the product of both intellect and the imagination. These are the elements which, when combined, transform the ordinary into the unusual. I hope that you, the members of the graduating class, will always be able to maintain a proper balance of these two elements in your own lives. I am certain that you want to make worthwhile contributions to a better way of life for yourselves and for all mankind and it is my hope that you will pledge yourselves to that end. T Sincerely, Annual Staff STANDING: Billy Robinson (Advertising), Gary Moran (Business Manager), Bradley Gifford (Advertising), Wayne Walton (Sales Manager), Kirby Paynter (Advertising) Linda Pratt (Photographer), Mike Cleaver (Consultant), Beverley Humble (Lay-out Editor), Sandra Wells (Proofreader). SEATED: Janie Burns (Advertising), Kerry Barnett (Co-Editor), Mr. Moore (Advisor), Pinkie Sparks (Co-Editor), Janie Jett (Art Editor). Dear Reader: In years to come as the DEMING DEVIL of 1965 is pulled out and shown, we know you will be proud to display the results of our staff's efforts in putting together this year's book. We are sure that in its pages you will find many chuckles and memories captured in order that both now and later you might enjoy them. We thank all who have had a part in making this publication possible with special regard to our patient and able advisor, Mr. Moore. We owe much to his leadership, encouragement, and inspiration. It is with great satisfaction and pride that the entire yearbook staff presents this volume to you. May you derive many years of pleasure from our 1965 DEMING DEVIL. Morford The Artist and His Art - A History By Bill Robinson Thomas Aquinas once said, Art is simply a right method of doing things. The test of the artist does not lie in the will with which he goes to work, but in the excellence of the work he produces. “ From the stand point of outstanding work, the Class of 1965 of Deming High School is a master artist. However, let's review some of the highlights of our class history and you, the reader, be the judge. Twelve years ago last fall this class started our first year in public schools. We have come a long way since that first day. By most measurements our grade school years were uneventful. They were important years though because it was during this time that we laid the foundation for all the learning we have done since that time. Four years ago we completed the grade school requirements and became high school freshmen. This was the highlight of our school experiences. We had looked forward so long to high school that we could hardly believe that it was true. We found that many things were quite different from what they were in elementary school. We had a lot of adjusting and adapting to do before we were really accepted as high school students. The transition was rather difficult because the upper classmen took advantage of our ignorance of high school customs. We were at times made the object of many practical jokes and pranks, but we lived through all the onslaughts for a very interesting and profitable year. In our first class meeting that year we elected Bradley Gifford, president; Jeannie Carpentar, vice president and Gary Moran, secretary. In our sophomore year we felt quite at home and a part of every phase of school life. We were a little too anxious to get revenge for some of the indignities that we suffered as freshmen and took out spite on the new freshmen class. To guide our class destinies we elected Jeannie Carpentar, president; Mike Cleaver, vice president; and Mary Lou Duncan, secretary. It was a good year and we learned a lot. Before we were aware of it, we had arrived at the half way point in our high school careers. We had finished the sophomore year and were face to face with the junior year. We, as juniors, developed much more maturity and came into places of leadership and importance. Thefollowing were electedclass officers: Janie Jett, president; Jeannie Carpentar, vice president; and Oneida Smith, secretary. As is the custom in our school, we presented our junior play early in the year. We selected Somebody Screamed and the main characters were Kerry Barnett, Gary Moran, Janie Jett, and Pinkie Sparks. We were well pleased with the performance, however, we did not make much money. In the magical month of May we entertained the seniors with a prom. Naturally, we thought this was a nice affair and judging from the compliments given by the seniors they thought so too. Because we were so busy our junior year passed by more quickly than either of the previous years. At last we were seniors. To lead in our class activities we elected Mike Cleaver, president; Jeannie Carpentar, vice president; Mary Lou Duncan, secretary; and Kirby Paynter, treasurer. We were delighted that once again Mr. Hale had been able to talk Mr. Moore into being our sponsor. The class lost no time in preparing a working budget and getting started on all the pertaining activities. Hardly a day passed that we were not busily engrossed in sitting for our senior pictures, soliciting annual ads, selecting play titles while we kept up with a daily routine of class work and activities. At ballgames we sold hotdogs, candy, and soft drinks until we dreamed about them at night. Truly, all work and no play makes the seniors a dull class so we interspersed our academic accomplishments with dreams of the time when we should board the George Washington to our Nation’s Capitol, as well as by occasional social flings. Neither was our senior year devoid of personal honors: Kirby Paynter and Mike Cleaver were among the basketball stars of 1965. Our Speech Festival participants were Pinkie Sparks, Bill Robinson, Mary Lou Duncan, Beverley Humble, Janie Jett, and Jeannie Carpentar. Janie Jett, with her ventriloquist act featuring Jerry, won the State Farm Bureau Championships and later participated in the National Contest. Academically, Mike Cleaver distinguished himself by rating in the top five per cent in the American College Tests. As Paul said, We have finished the course. Now we are seeking Higher Roads. Almost Ready for the Parade! Wait Here! of Linda Pratt We're Ready for the Long Ride! Go-Carting!
