1964 Deming Devil CLASS OF 1964 Publishers of THE DEMING DEVIL PROLOGUE In the beginning there was thought. Because of thought, reason came into being. A different reason exists for each of us . . . why we came to Deming. why we stayed here, why . . . Perhaps it was the search for new friends or for that “special one.” It could have been for the growth and development of the intellect. And it may have been to extend the fun and pleasure of elementary school days. One reason, however, was consistent among all of us--the desire to satisfy our search for Life’s unanswered questions. Every moment of life cannot be captured in a yearbook, but through it. memories of Life at Deming can be awakened. The 1963 DEMING DEVIL, by preserving some of these treasures within its pages and inside a permanent cover, tells us in one word that Life is . . . TRANSITION. —Class of 1964— DOYLE TRACTOR SALES Sardis Compliments of WILLIAM AND VIRGINIA MARTIN Piqua a Dedication IN MEMOR1AM THE 1964 DEMING DEVIL is dedicated in loving memory of NELLIE LUND RIGAN frank McDowell with a firm faith in the immortality of the soul in spite of every doubt. F rank McDowell, son of Claude and Oneita McDowell, was born in Robertson County on February 24, 1945 and departed this life on August 20, 1963. He married Yvonne Catron, his high school sweetheart. on April 7, 1962. Frankie , a member of the Baptist Church, was an upstanding young man of both serious purpose and genial manners. His untimely and tragic death in an automobile wreck brought grief and sadness to all who knew him. k % Miss Nellie Lundrigan, daughter of Robert and Ora Lundrigan. was born in 1904 and died in 1963. Miss Lundrigan taught school for many years--the past fifteen at Deming School. Her graciousness and personal charm combinedwithher professional talents made her a favorite teacher. The members of the graduating class that had Miss Nellie remember her with respect and esteem. And many have been the shocking, changing transformations since that September day. we. thirty-nine in number, enrolled for our first year of high school with G. T. Harding as our class sponsor. Speaking of changes, only one fact has remained totally unchanged and that is our regard for John Michael Famularo, who has served as our class president for our entire high school sojourn. In ways, we have been luckier than our predecessors, for we were the first class to be given the opportunity to take French. This year, too, Peggy Hale went to the State Speech Festival after qualifying in the regional speech festival. The Sophomore year, with Mrs. Robert Berry and Jesse Amburgy as our co-sponsors, and with six less in enrollment, featured Dwight Houchens and Michael Famularo in the role of star basketeers. James Brumagem and Peggy Hale were participants in the State Speech Festival, and Vicki McDowell was an entry in both the Speech and Music Festivals. With the same sponsor and the same enrollment, we climaxed our Junior year with multi-honors. Phronsie Jett. Vicki McDowell, and Joyce McCord were recipients of the State Homemakers Degree, the highest honor for a member of F. H. A., while Judy Hester and Vicki chalked up magazine salesmanship tropies. Diana Martin. Peggy Hale, and Carolyn Brockley cheered the Black Devils to a victorious season, with Famularo and Houchens contributing their share to the final victory. The Junior-Senior prom was themed to an Evening in Paris. ” Also during our Junior year, Amanda Ballingal, District Song Leader, won a trip to the State Speech Festival with her dramatic monalogue, The Inspiring Warbler. ” Too, several of our students added physics and third year French to their schedule. With T. Ross Moore as our class sponsor, we started our senior year with twenty-three in number and the following officers: President--John M. Famularo Vice President--James Brumagem Secretary--Joyce McCord Treasurer--Carolyn Brockley Reporter--Bonnie Workman As always, we were active in sports with Famularo, Houchens, and White starting on the first five, starting in the new gym. Peggy Hale, Diana Martin, and Joyce McCord were on the cheering squad. Vicki McDowell was elected District FHA parliamentarian. Peggy Hale and Dwight Houchens served as co-editors of the Annual, while Diana Dillon capped the title of Halloween Carnival Queen. This, our senior year, will be etched on our memories as a history-making time. When our children study future history books, we will remember anew the day when our principal turned on the T. V. and we heard the shocking news, ’’John F. Kennedy, our thirty-fifth President, has been assassinated in Dallas, Texas. With Mr. Moore guiding us in our projects and achievements, chaperoning our trip to Washington, and helping us to plan our last ceremonial activities, we are now writing the final chapters to our history. Now, as we look toward New Frontiers let us say, as the late President Kennedy said in I960; ’’Ask not what our country can do for us, ask what TOGETHER we can do for America. C. P.
