First Graders Reading About Jesus Cheerleaders of 1958-59 Her Majesty the Queen Henderson's Thanksgiving Party 'History of American Firearms Fourth Grade Story Hour THE LONG JOURNEY by Rebecca Berry and Doris Anderson September, 1947 On May 22, 1960, the history of the Class of this year will be closed and sealed. It has taken years of labor, disillusionments, and happiness for us to achieve the rank of Seniors, the long chain of events beginning in thepostwarperiodofSeptember. 1947. Like the bombshells that we were, we came bursting into Mrs. Irene’s first grade room on that first day of school. We sometimes wonder if any of us experienced that timidity that is so characteristic of Beginners. The years passed swiftly--Miss Eloise, Mrs. Overbey, Mrs. Brumagem, Miss Louderback. and Mr. Clift, each teaching us from the second through the sixth grade. In the Seventh Grade, we were joined by some newcomers from the then well-known Kentontown and Piqua Schools (since passed into oblivion). Junior High School marked a time of excitement and learning for us. With Mrs. Sims as Sponsor, we started our Freshman year at Deming. Illness caused the resignation of Mrs. Sims and Mrs. Norma Craig took over her duties. Our float, captioned Hit Parade”, was entered in the Agricultural Farm Bureau parade. Our main money projects were serving the Lions Club and the Halloween Carnival. At the close of the school year, we took a trip to Butler State Park. With Mr. Hamilton and Mrs. Hixon as co-sponsors, we entered into a second year of high school with much zeal and enthusiasm. The school parade marked the first date on our agenda. We represented the twelve months of the year on our float. Again we served the Lions and sold homemade candy at the hallgames. In May we went on a tour to the State Capital at Frankfort. ( The Junior chapter of our history was a busy, exciting, and eventful one. Mrs. Katherine Hixson worked side by side with us to make this a successful year, both scholastically and economically. Our float depicted Miss Robertson County, on the order of the Miss America pageant, complete with pretty attendants and escorts. We proved to be ‘‘super” salesmen and women! We sold more than our quota of magazines and our three act comedy was a howling success, appropriately called “Stop the Wedding . The Mammoth Cave excursion and the Junior-Senior Prom climaxed the season. Seniors at last! We were honored with Mr. T. Ross Moore being our Sponsor. Other honors came to us as we worked for the Halloween Carnival, at which our own candidate, Doris Anderson, reigned as Queen. Five of our boys were selected among the top ten on the school basketball squad. Ann Sandifer won the Ninth District Farm Bureau Queen title and several of the boys and girls had lead roles in our play, ‘‘Marrying Margaret.” Mr. Moore directed the play as well as our projects of selling concessions at each ballgame and master minded” the planning of our Home-coming ball game--the Varsity Devils versus the Alumni Devils--which the Varsity won. Our annual has been one of our outstanding out of school projects. All too soon now. we'll wear the traditional caps and gowns which will be a farewell” of sorts to high school days. We have planned and worked and anticipated this year, especially our trip to Washington, D.C. and our graduation exercises. The road from September. 1947 to May, 1960 has been long but the journey will soon be ended and we will commence” a new one and from then on it will be “every senior to himself.” September, 1959 SENIOR CLASS WILL As the time for our departure from the realm of Deming High School, Mt. Olivet, draws nearer, we, the members of the Class of 1960, wholly sound in mind and philosophy, hereby take our pen in hand, on this the twentieth day of December, to make our last will and testament. First and foremost, the Class, as a whole, leaves to our homeroom teacher, T, Ross Moore, a thousand thanks for the happy year we have spent with him, coupled with our sincere tribute of respect for his guidance and untiring consideration. To our superintendent, Mrs. Hazel Dryden; our Principal, H. O. Hale; and the other members of the Deming Faculty, we bequest our very best wishes for the continued growth of our school, as well as a silent avowal of thanks for all past educational opportunities. To the Juniors, we will our homeroom, our best wishes and fondest hopes for a successful Senior year. All individual personal property is to be disposed of in the following manner; To Sharon Sandifer, Ann Sandifer bequeaths her District Nine Farm Bureau Queen Title in the hope that she will receive the State crown in 1968. To Mary Belle Tatman goes Joyce Burns' quiet disposition and lady-like qualities. Carolyn Dotson leaves her joys as a Devils' fan to Carolyn Curtis. Some leave this, some leave that, but Ronnie Montgomery just leaves. Wayne Ellison wills his ability to not find fault to Ray Bruce Craig and Marvin Bradley. Mary Marsh and Billy Bob White will their “standing room for two on the balcony to Diana Craig and John Reeves, providing Mr. Hale approves. Charles Franklin Reeves reluctantly leaves his special art of playing basketball to Philip Hester. On Larry Hughes, Robin Taylor bestows his bashfulness. Mary Graves wills her ability to get a boy on the basketball squad to Susie Jett. To Lillie Mitchell goes Emma French's sparkling personality. Terry Taylor leaves his love for Eighth Graders to Howard Bentley. Katie Sue Brumagem wills her scholarship tendencies to Jim Bruamgem, hoping that he will be valedictorian of the Class of 1964. Joe Famularo leaves the hope that Rebecca Berry and Tommy Clay Orme may in the near future be elected to the State Legislature where their arguing will be of benefit to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Upon Marvin Bradley. Tommy Clay Orme bestows his “cue stick at the Eight Ball. Allen Clarke leaves his ability to work geometry to Bobo Hunt. William Garrison leaves his driving skills to La Vaughn Cole. To Sarah Lou Culp. Donnie Hedges wills his letter a day” habit. Eddie Reed leaves his height to Bob Pollitt. To Roger Henson, Jerry Stewart wills his speed and agilness. Larry Curtis leaves to William Martin. Sr. all cars that have ancienf motors. Larry Linville reluctantly leaves his pleasant association withBracken County to anyone who needs it. Philip Mann sadly wills his good times in high school to his brother, James. Doris Anderson leaves her crown as Halloween Queen to next year’s hardest worker. To Leola Poe, Rebecca Berry bestows her spelling ability. To this document we affix our signatures. Witnesses: .tinned- PROPHECY A LEAF FROM THE DIARY OF CAROLYN DOTSON--July 7, 1975 Dear Diary: Tonight I attended a party at the lovely home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Orme. It was a party given for the Doming Class of 1960, of which both Tommy and his wife Mary were members. It was very pleasing to see how my fellow schoolmates have held to their fondest dreams and to observe how many of them have come true. When I arrived at the Ormes’, the party was well under way and there, in one corner, were the girls discussing old times. I soon learned that Doris Anderson is now married. The clear, strong voice of Rebecca Berry, wife of Scotty Graves, next attracted my attention. Mary whispered that Rebecca is one of the most capable debaters in Congress. Arriving even after I did was Katie Brumagem, now Mrs. John David Sims. One of the Sims’ fine Angus cows had strayed and thus made Katie late. In answer to a question about her hair, Mary stated that it had been set by Joyce Burns, who operates a shop in both Mt. Olivet and Flemingburg. I learned she is still trying to hook the “Goat”. Somehow I hope she gets him. Emma French, the former baking contest queen, now the wife of Wendell Pratt, happily told me all about her four fine children. Mary Margaret Marsh and her husband, Billy Bob White, showed all the signs of being quite prosperous. Mary transferred from Harrison County during our Senior year. On the program for the party was the charming star of hillbilly music. Miss Ann Sandifer. Her latest hit--I WALK WITH BILLY-- was a smashing success. 1 next ran into the de bona ire Charles Franklin Reeves. He had flown in from the ‘‘bright lights” region of Las Vegas. He is an outstanding writer, but unfortunately he devotes time to those pursuits only when ‘‘Lady Luck” deserts him. He gave me a run-down on all the male members of the Class. Eddie Reed is now owner of the largest chicken farm in Robertson County. I think his father-in-law is in the same business. Jerry Stewart is the outstanding star on the Harlan Globetrotters. He said he didn’t mind the least being the only white player among the “Sunburnt Yankees”. William Garrison, Hollywood’s most celebrated actor since Yuhl Brynner, is still the same old William. Stardom hasn’t effected him in the least. Philip Mann was at the party with his arm in a sling--he tests outer space vehicles. Wayne Ellison’s dream of becoming an author was fully realized when he was awarded last year’s Pulitzer prize for his book, CHIPMUNKS AND ACORNS. Joseph Famularo, the famous criminal lawyer from Kentontown, was absent. Charles said he had gone to Cincinnati where his wife, the former Karen Cline, is a model. Donnie “Goat” Hedges, the lover of the Class of 60, is still unattached. Mike Hammer has retired leaving his place in the detecting business to Larry Linville. The adventurer and explorer. Ronnie Montgomery, postponed an African Hunt to attend. Allen Clarke is now working for General Motors. With Allen cars always did come first. Larry Curtis is operating a night spot in Southern Ohio. Who would have thought this would follow a brilliant college performance? Robin Taylor is a retired New York Yankee pitcher. Too bad more of us can’t get rich so quickly. I wonder if he likes hillbilly music ? Terry Taylor is now assistant manager of the speedway at Minneapolis. His driving habits of yesterday should be good background experience. Putting in a late appearance was our old sponsor, who is now dean of a select boys’ school run by the Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He surprised everyone by marrying a teacher from Alabama. I’m so tired, I must stop writing and be off to sleep. NOEL HALL Mt. Olivet, Ky, BOOSTERS auu. ROYAL THEATRE Mt. Olivet, Ky. JOHN T. WHITE Wtr-OUyet, Ky. 0. xF. NEWTON L. RANKINS Tax Commissioner Mt.
