dwc fyweneAt by William Grant Paynter, III As one thinks back over the years that have passed since we who graduate this year were Freshmen, we feel that while all may not have been exactly perfect, the passing years have dimmed the memory of the unpleasant things and intensified the memory of pleasant happenings. Remember the year we were Freshmen? We were green! That year we numbered 21. We had dropped from 36 in the eighth grade. Mr. Moore was our sponsor and under his inspiration we began to make money in anticipation of trips to come. In our Sophomore year, we were improving, but we still weren’t models of decorum! If you don't believe this you can just ask our Sophomore sponsor, Mr. Farcie Woods, for this is the year in which Coach Woods moved here and took over as our home room teacher and as coach of our District Tournament team. Bobby McDowell transferred to Deming from Milford Junior High School. In our Junior year, we were a jolly group. We made money for our Junior trip by selling candy and beanies. We were delighted to have Mr. Moore back as our sponsor. He had finished his M. A. degree in Southern History at the University of Kentucky and returned to teach at Deming once more. The production of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol” was an outstanding success and those attending still rememberMr. Moore as Scrooge, and BobbyGraves as Tiny Tim. Being true to our motto Be Different, we took a three-day Junior trip. We had fun and learned a lot on a See Kentucky tour which took us to Mammoth Cave and Nashville, Tennessee. Our Senior year has been fun this far. and I know it will be so until the day we change the tassels on our caps and turn our rings. This year we were glad to welcome a newcomer. Thomas K. Linville, who came from Mayslick. Our class clearly illustrates the heavy dropout problem. We began with 21 as Freshmen, but as Seniors we number 11. Why have the others dropped out? Four of the girls took marital status--two girls quit and entered the world of business--six boys quit for economic reasons and one failed and quit. Now as we are seniors, we think back over the last three years of our-life and high school career. We have no doubt, had hard knocks and bumps, but we have fenjoyed each year as we never will enjoy future years. During this year we sold magazines. Christmas cards, and advertisement to help finances. We also gave the annual senior play, an event to which we had long looked forward. We must and want to say that we would not and could not have attained this great height if it had not been for the wonderful parents, teachers, and principal along our way who have encouraged us and helped us with untiring strength.
