Thirty-three excited students enrolled in our class at the beginning of our high school career. We were the typical, mischievous Freshmen. One by one during the first year, our classmates dropped out of school until at the beginning of ou Sophomore year theredwere only twenty-two of us left. Our second year, like our first, soon PII!! e Our number decreased to twenty during our Junior year. It was then we be n making extensive plans for raising money to sponsor a trip to some interesting place at the end of our Senior year. In the fall of 1947 we began the last lap of our high school jou ney. with eighteen students, each eager to tackle the remaining courses in English, Government, Ph slcs, and Agriculture, we Joyfully entered our Senior year at Deming High School, We elected Viola Barnette for our class President and chose as our motto one of Benjamin Frank11n's famous sayings: 'There are no gains without painsn. Some of us will no doubt choose to go further down the road that eventually leads to fame and fortune. Fond memories of our four years here at Deming High School shall ever go with us on our journey through life. Too, we shall always appreciate the part that our instructors have played in the shaping of our destinies. They have helped us in achieving a portion of success and happiness. Soon we shall be saying goodbye to Deming High School and as we leave her portals may we say as Longfellow once wrote: Lives of great men all remind us we can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time, Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er l1fe's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. ' W We, the Seniors of Deming High School, being of sou d mind and memory do hereby declzre this to be our last will and test- amen e To our faculty, we bequeath our utmost sympath in teaching the remaining stu- dents. To the Ju iors, we leave our beloved home room, to occupy and retain for the e coming year. To the Sophomores and Fresh en we leave our intelligence to be put to the best possible use. Dorothy Ashcraft hereby wills her secret for 'dieting' to Anna Lee Overbey Viola Bsrnette wills her wit and sense of hu or to Juanita Myers. Barbara Linville wills her chewing gum to Romana Myers. Martha Jane Hildreth wills her acrobatic ability to Martha Dean Mitchell. Sylvia Wheeler wills her 'possum grin to Constance Craig. Janet Kabler wills her 'Come Either' look to Lola Wheary. Bernetta Ogden wills her 'free bus rides' to Mary Jo Barnette. Mary Jo Henson wills her quiet disposition to Ruby Watson. Margie Woodward wills her musical ability to Jeanette Garrison. Hester Rose Moore wills her 'love' for Physics to Donnie Morford. Wendell Hall wills his 'pet gripes' to Don Linville. Earl Wesley Overbey wills his 'physique' to Bud Clark. Denny Sandifer wills his job as manager of Devils to William Owen Massey. Em itt Hu ble wills his affections to Betty French. Carroll Curtis wills his smile to Nolan Craig. Jackie Berry wills his charms to all the boys of Deming High School. We hereby affix ou signatures to this ou last will and testament: gan. wtf! ' AW KEd1tor's Note: In Ju s, 1958, the following article, written by Martha Jane Hildreth, appeared in the Tribune Democrat . D Timex 1958 Place: Deming High School Gym Occasion: Reunion of graduating class of 1948. we, the Senior Class of 1948, after a decade of establish- ing ourselves in the field of our choice decided it was time E? reassemble at nthe Academy on the hill' to talk ever old mes. Our senior class president, Viola Barnette, was the first to arrive. She was quite tired as she had walked from the South end of town. She had never gotten a window for the car. Margie Woodward was next to arrive on the scene. Earlier in the evening the had given a concert at Carnegie Hall, so it was necessary for her to some by p ane. Wendell Hall looked very happy as he approached the scene. He had just Hchalk- ed up' another broken heart to his credit. Dorothy Clyde Ashcraft certainly surprised the class with her choice of a career. She now holds the title of championship lady wrestler. She fou d great pleasure in telling us about her last match. We were surprised at the remarkable change in Barbara L1nvllle's personality. She has actually learned to control her temper. Carroll Curtis had spent a tiresome day in front of the camera. Rosslyn Harbor had lost his picture again. we missed Emmltt Hu ble during the evening, but as usual we fou d him ln the Study Hall. He and Betty had gone there to recall familiar scenes of ten years lgoe Professor and Hrs. G. T. Harding, alias Hester Rose Moore, attended the event. They were accompanied by all of the little professors. Mrs. Chester Marcu , the former Bernetta Ogden, Joyfully told us of the huge success of the Marcum bus lines. Janet Kabler, the student the Class thought was most likely to succeed has lived up to ou highest expectations. She now holds a Monopoly on all Mortuary Services in the state. Mary Jo Henson was telling us of her interesting experiences as teacher of Physics at University of Kentucky. As we glanced over the crowd we saw Earl Wesley 'Tubby' Overbey, a business man of high renown, a cross-bred dairy man professional gambler, and a fellow who r1na11y get that Jeb with all work abeiaehea. Denny Slndifer was late in arriving because he had just been made Assistant Manager of Clark's Pool Room. Only two of our classmates arrived together - Jackie Berry and Martha Jane Hildreth. They were on their vacations from teaching at U.C.L.A. The only member of'the class who was not able to attend was Sylvia Wheeler, a Missionary in India. Each of us greatly enjoyed the reunion, indulging in remininscence and comparing experiences which awakened in our hearts many happy memories of those four happy years spent at Deming High School. W The Freshmen Class of 1945, with Mrs. Christine Sims as home room sponsor, entered Deming High School with high hopes and great expectancy. We were in- dustrious and eager to get the most from our educational opportunities. Like most all other high school classes, we have been beset by great losses in the nu ber of classmates who have quit school, some through channels of matrimony and others because of general discouragements. The Sweetheart Banquet, sponsored by our class, highlighted our Sophomore year. Through both our Sophomore and Junior years Mrs. Sandlfer has been our Sponsor. Now at the end of our third year we are only fourteen in nu ber. Our class roll with pictures above, reading from left to right, is as follows! Mary Lou Hlldreth, Donnie Morford, Mary Jo Barnette, Norma Howard, Betty French, Juanita Myers, Betty Stoker, E. C. Thomas, William Owen Massey, John King, Nolan Craig, Wayne Selby, and Mrs. Sandifer. Donald Linville, President of the class, and Don McBrayer, Vice-President, were absent when the group picture was made. 06 Q'u5'Nco'f, 9,3136 fmahcf - rfoskdefxt, f UC X 1 , Svc fTvoaa - Niqfoxd NQFOQ YN? vQN',x A 'w, QYGQYCY KCVKGQOG -pw' ,CT f fAN,U,am Nona WSOYS ' Vvfvcn uvd VmfHKnf Yfcevmrw f Oman Soooa q'YYG5XiGOY f Yonai b1ovXX Seckifoaa. f Axxoackgo Ono Xkepofbof f Bogus Xkacxaefg ofxaof '11w5,'35 Case 59 X e Yfcakfiefvn f 'hwy Low Sofxee V- Xvfakdeot f IAQ GXoe'5of9p C:N,,-gnjfli , ?Q,1Lf9.T: CQQX-X ff ' Lois Twine Nxomfe SCC . iK1o'v3xy.f J Sgvorvaof f 'Wx . 14 in ,,,, 5 og ca 'Siva on f Pqxo XKOYKOS O0 'Er 6000 dos? 90 rfealdeob f XIK,cefYi'ef5X?.6fW 5ec.fTfcaa. f 30306 fxef f Xkafjj XMB-WX Co f Xmas . boxxdcfbacv KGQO Spooeof l Irene Galbraith Eloise Hitt Virginia Overbey First Grade Second Grade Third Grade Willie Sims Jane Hester Sue Dodson Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Sixth Grade The school year 1947-48 has been an u usually successful and active one for the Deming grades, one to six. During the year, each grade, under the immediate supervision of the home room teacher has given at least one program for the P.T.A. These programs, presented monthly, have varied in themesg but each has had some educational value in addition to entertainment. Such topics as health and safety have been emphasized quite frequently. The first and second grades sponsored a doll show as well as a toy exhibition ,r 2?
