Half- time ended anxious waiting as the juniors were awarded the float trophy and Judy Dewey and Lyle Lester were crowned Homecoming King and Queen, The Delton Panthers played a tough game as they fought hard for yardage against the Mattawan team, but it ended in a O-0 tie. But each year at Delton the time is taken to recognize the students who are persistent in their studies and excel in one or more of their classes. The honored students can be proud of this accomplishment for it is their hard work and diligence that allows them to attend the Honors Banquet, This page sponsored by PATTEN MONUMENT CO, 7I At right the coaches await the opportunity to introduce their teams as the guest speaker, Glen Schembechler, the head football coach at the Univer- sity of Michigan, presents his talk. 2? fa 2 thletic Excellence Praised t Banquet Every spring, as the sports come to an end for another school year, the athletes who competed on teams for Delton are honored at the All-Sports Banquet. At this time, after the exhausting hours of practice and exciting minutes of competition are over, the teams are recognized for their achievements, Most important of all, however, is the individual acknowledgment given to each athlete for his efforts, whether he was the team's super star or the guy that sat the bench, always ready to help the team when he was needed. Progressive Year For Student Council One of the toughest elected positions for a student to hold at Delton is that of a Student Council representative. It requires responsibility, integrity and imagination from the council members in order to have a successful year. The school was fortunate enough to have several students such as this within the 1968-69 Student Council. These people not only supplied new ideas but the time and energy to get them started. Among their accomplishments were the revision of the Constitution, formation of a student lounge, purchasing of a juke box, sending packages to soldiers in Vietnam, hanging of the Freedom Shrine display in the halls and filling the marquee planter. Q ' . ,TV Controversy ver Sideburns Resolved The Student Code Committee, set up to study and revise the original Code, met a great deal of conflict on the issue of personal appearance. A large percent of the male population within the school felt that they should be allowed to wear long sideburns, mustaches and beards. The administration, reluctant to allow such a drastic change, compromised with the students request and longer sideburns became permissible. Sports Is Key To Varsity Club Becoming a Varsity Club member means more than going through the humorous, em- barrassing and sometimes painful experience of initiation. It requires a Varsity letter which is earned through long hours of prac- tice, training, drilling and more practice. It involves the heartaches, joys, disappoint- ments and excitement that is felt during the winning and losing of a sports season. The Varsity Club unites those who have met the challenge of becoming an athlete and a team member, This year the Varsity Club was led by President Lyle Lester, Vice-President Bruce Campbell, Secretary-Treasurer Phil Michael and was sponsored by Mr. Gordon Christensen y g To The Loyal G A A Member Happiness Is Initiation, W p Powder Puff, Bowling, dn, Lake Michigan . . . Usually, in a season such as Delton had, the team diminishes as the games wear on. This year however, the last game found the team only one man short of their beginning number. Highlighting the season were some very fine individual players including tackles Rick Armin- trout and Blaine High, leading rusher John Dyer and quarterback Sam Zomer, The strength and determination displayed by both team and coach are a good indication of the type of squad that so proudly represented the Panthers this year, ' 'W DON HALL DOUG CAMPBELL f'73Q Seniors Add Stren th To Team . . . Re- spected and admired by his teammates, Lyle was voted as team captain and served the squad as a strong player and morale booster, to help them through many difficult games, Mark Alman, a second year man on the squad, was the man on the move during basketball season, Always coming through in a tough situation, Mark worked hard generating team drive that he himself displayed, Mark shared the position of team captain with Lyle and was selected as 2nd team All-KVA guard, Bub Babcock went out for Var- sity ball for the first time in his senior year and proved to be an excellent rebounding de- fense man and sharp shooter. His teammates voted him Most Improved Player of the year. Senior Mike Little was a con- sistent starter during the cage season, Possessing the ability to play fast, defensive ball and score when needed most made Mike a valuable asset to the team, Stuffing a basketball was one of the many great abilities that Pat Galley displayed during basketball season Pat, a second ,year senior player proved his worth as a strong starter and versatile back-up man. Winn Matteson launches one of his accurate long corner shots that gained many points for the Panthers, Winn, a junior, proved to be indispensable for his all-around good play. He received Honorable Mention for the All-KVA league team, Junior Gene Lewis evades an opponent to attempt a shot from the corner. Gene could come into a game cold and immedi- ately fire shots through the nets with amazing ease, which made him a tremendous back-up man. Tournament Excitin p But Disappointin Bob Nelson, a junior, lets loose with a long one from the top of the key, As the usual starting center, Bob's height and defensive prowess proved to be valuable under the boards, Mike Boyle was selected as the Most Valu- able player on this year's squad, an honor rarely bestowed to a junior, With an abil- ity to score consistently, Mike frequently took honors for high point man. He was awarded Honorable Mention for All-KVA league team. ,fy W Herb Doster readies himself for a rebound as opponents close in to battle for the ball, Coming on strong in his junior year, Herb made such a tremendous impression with his defensive play and accurate shot that he earned an occasional starting spot. Junior Sam Zomer, running through warm-ups before game time, had the distinction of being voted the Team Clown by his teammates.
