Cash. Dr. Cash has been a member of the Delta State University faculty for 26 years and currently serves as Professor of History and Chairman of the Department of History. During his tenure at DSU, Dr. Cash has established a reputation as a master teacher, fair administrator, and friend of the many students who have come under his tutelage. More than that, however, he has been a friend to all who have sought his help and guidance, always anxious to go the extra step to help a student achieve and learn. The uniqueness of Dr. Cash ' s contributions centers around his unselfish attitude. The remarks of some of his students describe the affection with which he is held: He is always helpful but never expects anything in return. He teaches not only from books, but from the heart as well. Along with history, he teaches you great lessons of life. He always wants the best for his students, and encourages them to do their best. Dr. Cash mirrors the spirit and character of Delta State University. For these reasons and countless others, we extend to him our thanks and appreciation through this dedication. •;; It ' s a pain in the neck It ' ll make you a wreck The crowds, the confusion, the mass disillusion. A VERY SPECIAL ARTS FESTIVAL Heflin ' s R Z CAY Games The Delta Playhouse of Delta State University presented Os- car Wilde ' s The Importance of Being Earnest October 7-9. Set in the late 19th Century, the play concerned the activities of an upper class British gentle- man who has invented an im- aginary younger brother in a scheme to lead a double life. Dr. Ted Soloman, professor of speech, directed the very de- lightful play. The 1987 homecoming court (From 1 to r) Mellany Rayburn of Southaven; Cheryl Patrick • LA; Spring Heflin of Merigold; Queen — Alicia White of Farrel; Renee Selby of Holcomb. Alicia White of Farrel was named Homecoming Queen at Delta State University during halftime of the Statement football victory over Tennessee- Martin. Miss White is the daughter of McKinley and Ida White of Farrel. A senior majoring in com- puter information systems, Miss White is a member of the American Marketing Association, the Black Student Organi- zation, and serves as treasurer of the Data Processing Man- agement Association at Delta State. The Homecoming Queen and her court were chosen by student elections. Dr. Lily Golden, a black So- viet Scientist, visited Delta State this fall. Dr. Golden toured the United States to gain a better insight into Amer- ican culture while speaking to American citizens on Soviet life. She spoke to several groups on the Delta State cam- pus and also attended a wor- ship service in her honor presented by the BSO. Dr. Golden with BSO members The Lion in Winter, a James Goldman ' s play concerned the power struggles within a royal British family during the late 1 100 ' s. It was presented by the Delta Playhouse, Nov. 20-23. The play revolved around a conflict over the succession to the throne of Henry II during the Christmas season of 1 183. Richard Friendly environment of the campus, low student- teacher ratio, reasonable tuition, and strength of degree programs are the major reasons students choose to attend Delta State University, according to research done by the university. The survey was conducted by the DSU Office of Institutional Research, which polled students in English 101 and English 090. These particular courses were selected because they are almost entirely comprised of first-time freshmen, the primary target of this survey, said Dr. John G. Thornell, Director of Institutional Research. The survey form was administered during the first week of classes in an effort to insure that responses werer based on judgments made prior to immersion into campus life, Thornell said. The friendly environment associated with the DSU campus easily topped the list of factors, registering a 4.21 rating on a scale that ranged from 5 (Very Important) to 1 (Not Important). Low student-teacher ratio was second at 3.74, followed by tuitioin (3.49) and strength of degree programs (3.46). Also scoring above 3 (Moderately Important) was the close location of the campus to the student ' s home. Other highly related factors were the influence of a Delta State student, availability of scholarships, contact with the DSU Admissions Office, parental influence, and the influence of a DSU graduate. In general, the results of the study match the philosophy of the University, Thornell said. The leadership of Delta State has long maintained the importance of cordial, personal and helpful relations with students. In addi- tion. Delta State has always put a higher percentage of available funds into clasroom instruction, which permits us to have a very favorable student-teacher ratio and helps keep the tuition the lowest of any state university. Thornell said the emphasis on instruction also helped the University achieve national accreditation for a very high percentage of its academic programs, a factor the survey indicated was very important to the students. The National Opera Company, a professional troupe which presents opera in the English language, will perform Gioacchino Rossini ' s The Barber of Seville at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, in Broom Auditorium on the Delta State University campus. The performance, sponsored by the Crosstie Arts Council and the Special Programs Committee of Delta State University, will be funded in part through a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Rossini, the principal Italian composer during the early 1 9th cen- tury, reflects his gift for melody and his feeling for stage effect in The Barber of Seville, generally con- sidered his masterpiece. The opera is often mentioned with Mozart ' s Figaro and Verdi ' s Falstaff ' as the best examples of Italian comic opera. Since 1948, the National Opera Company has performed well- known operas in English in 36 states. The Company operates under the philosophy that Americans will respond to opera when they can follow the subtleties of the plot,, including the humor of the comedies and the sadness of the tragedies. Pam Morgan, a sophomore from Holcomb, was named Most Beautiful at Delta State University, winning the title over 44 other contestants in the annual DSU Beauty Pageant. Miss Morgan, who is majoring in mar- keting and minoring in computer infor- mation systems at DSU, is the daughter of Judy and Willie Shaw of Holcomb. The 5- 8, brown-eyed, auburn-haired beauty, is a member of Kappa Delta sorority and plans to pursue a master ' s degree and become a marketing consultant. Miss Saxton is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley N. Saxton of Yazoo City. A freshman majoring in pre-pharmacy, she is a graduate of Manchester Academy. The 5- 10, blue-eyed blond is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at DSU. Miss Williams is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Grady E. Williams III of Cleveland. She is a freshman fashion merchandising major and plans to become a department store buyer. The 5-8, brown-haired beauty is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. During his sabbatical. Outlaw will be associated with the School ' s Lineberger Cancer Research Center and its Depart- ment of Pharmacology, which is headed by Dr. T. Kenall Harden, one of Outlaw ' s former students at DSU. The sabbatical will provide a unique opportunity for me to work with a former student who has gone on to become one of the leaders in academic medicine, Out- law said. Such an opportunity as this provides an important way for faculty development to take place, Outlaw said. Through such experiences, we are able to keep in touch with the mainstream of scientific movement and prog- ress, and to establish contact with major universities outside our area. Outlaw will also visit Duke Uni- versity and North Carolina State University. The opportunities I will have during my leave will provide a tremendous aca- demic and cultural experi- ence that I will be able to pass on to students in my classes at Delta State, Outlaw said. Harden, a native of Amory and 1970 chemistry graduate of DSU, has been Chair- man of the Department of Pharmacology at UNC since 1977. He is a specialist in the neurosciences and bio- chemical control mechanisms at the membrane level of normal and cancer cells. Everett, who was selected to participate in the limited enrollment session on the basis of a manuscript of poems he submitted, studied two weeks with poet novelist Dave Smith. While at Bennington, Everett met more than 30 prize-winning authors, including Henry Taylor, Annie Dilliard, Tobias Wolff, and Richard Ford, who participated as visiting writers. The fulltime staff included Carole Oles, Elizabeth Cox, Blanche Boyd, Jon Manchip White, and Alan Cheuse, acting director of the workshop. Everett said Smith and the 1 1 other members of his Poetry Police seminar gave him intense criticism of his work. I ' ve come back with 17 bleeding poems, Everett said, but that ' s what I went for. I now take my poetry more seriously than before. I learned to be harder on myself, and now I hope to have a book out in a couple of years. It was the experience of my writing life, Everett con- tinued. We were given mornings and sometimes all day to write and revise, I worked hard; I heard 24 writers read and attended every post-reading party. On top of all that I had the opportunity to spend some enlightening hours with a good friend, the great writer Richard Ford. Everett said the experience would help him become a better teacher of writing as well as a more constructive critic of his own student ' s work. TERRY SIMMONS, Art DON SKELTON, Asst Ftball. The School setting makes choices easy. The most difficult choices made were what classes to take and who to live with. But after turning the tassel, what next? For some, marriage lies ahead, for others, grad school. For most, it will be time to see if the apron strings we have cut will be long enough to tie on to something else — a career. Mr. Webster defines career as a profession or occupation which one trains for and pursues as a lifework. For the past four years, we have been trained so that we could find our own lifework out in the real world. No matter if that work be nursing, a CPA, a teacher, or a writer, we each have the duty to believe in ourselves and in those around us. This poem by Amanda Bradley, found on a greeting card, sums up one senior ' s feelings. We all have our own separate pathways to take, our own destinations to choose. We all have our own contributions to make, our own special talents to use — We all have our own kind of life to pursue, our kind of dream to be weaving . . . And we all have the power to make wishes come true, as long as we keep on believing. Cleveland Christmas holidays for most students mean rich food, gifts and giving, and family around the tree. For Jeff Boyette. this Christmas will be quite different. Jeff will spend his Christmas in Brazil. South America. Jeff is one of 150 students selected nationwide to serve as a Missionary to Brazil. Jeff, a senior Speech Pathology major from Natchez, is not new to the mission field. He worked in California during the summer of 1986, and Colorado in 1987. His summers were filled with speaking, teaching vacation Bible school, conducting Bible studies, and working with children. The students going on the trip were required to raise their own money — $1700. The state of Mississippi gave me $700. Jeff stated, the rest has to come from family, church, friends, and Christian businessmen in Natchez. You may be wondering what motivates Jeff to take part in Mission trips. After all. most of us spend our summers working hard and playing harder. I was raised in a Christian home and accepted as a teenager. Jeff began, there have been times of ups and downs, but there is a security in knowing that God is on my side. I have always loved kids, and it bothers me that Christian values are no longer a key in their upbringing. I want to share my experience with them and let them know that there ' s a better way. It is an essay which must be type-written, double-spaced. An essay which must be in my box by 5:00 p.m. Friday. An essay for which there is no make-up assignment. Often, it is an essay which, despite our devoted and determined will, will not be written on time, will contain numerous typographical errors, and will find itself making a rather belated appearance on the following Monday. What happened? Where did we go astray? What obstacle stood in the way of our best laid plans? Well, it all started with I should be studying, which led to the I ' ve got this big paper to do, followed by the I ' m never going to get this done, and culminating in the now-famous I ' m going to have to pull an all-nighter. And we just sit there at the desk. I can ' t think. It ' s writer ' s block. If I could just write the first sentence — if I could just write the first word. Maybe . . . just maybe I — ... And then we panic. There just, I mean, there ' s just, I mean there ' s just no way I ' m ever going to get this done. What am I going to do? Oh, dear me. Oh what am I going to do? Endless obscenities and I can ' t take it anymores follow, and the scenario seems all too familiar. And while we sit and silently commit ourselves to the academic asylum for the educationally insane, we try to imagine that it ' s not our fault. Self-pity, curses on our professors, soul-searching. Why am I here? What does it all mean? does anything really exist? I find myself only a small being in a ... a ... a .. . collegiate void. We ponder the meaning of life. Despite coming up with an answer (and a sure shot at philosophical immortality) we cast it aside, and return to the task of trying to explain the obvious to the oblivious. A good two hours have been completely erased, and the essay, completely untouched. At 4:00 a.m., it is finished. Magnificent? No. Superior? Not really. Adequate? Maybe. Done? Yes, that ' s the word that I am looking for. Under the pressure, under the gun, and just under the wire, it ' s finished. We race to the class, (we slept through our first two, didn ' t we?) burst through the door and reach our seat, just in time to hear . . . And as you may have been posted outside my office, the paper due date has been extended until next Friday. All at once, the proverbial drawing board comes to mind, and we have to laugh. The Baptist Student Union at Delta State was organized November 4, 1929. Sinec its beginning, three things have character- ized Baptist Student Union. These characteristics arc the Baptist Student Union is Christ centered, church related, and student led. For several years following its organization, the Baptist Student Union at Delta State was carried on primarily by students with some assistance by Baptist faculty members and local pastors. The first Director of the Baptist Student Union at Delta Stale was Rev. Riley Munday who assumed this responsibility in 1946. Mr. Munday served until 1948 and was succeeded by Miss Dot Lee Jefferson, later to become Mrs. John Merrill, who served until 1949. Following Mrs. Merrill ' s res- ignation. Rev. Roy S. Isbell came to Delta State as BSU Director and served until 1951. In the fall of 1955, Rev. James A. Breland began his tenure as BSU Director and continues in that position in 1987. Until the summer of I960, the Baptist Student Union conducted its program and the BSU Di- rector had an office on campus in college fa- cilities. In 1960. a large dwelling at 903 S. Court Street in Cleveland, which was purchased and renovated by the Mississippi Baptist Convention, was occupied as the Baptist Student Center. This building continued to be used until 1977 when it became inadequate. At that time, the building was removed and construction was begun on a beau- tiful and adequate Baptist Student Center which was occupied bv the Baptist Student Union in April 1979. After graduation, she hopes to someday work for a major corporation in advertising or in some sort of marketing field. Spring ' s talent revolves around dance. She began tap, ballet, and jazz dancing 7 years ago. Her most prevalent form of dance is clogging. She began clogging when she joined Cleveland Cloggers 4 years ago. Now she teach- es the clogging class at DSU. Spring ' s father, who has been a definite influence in her life, has taught physical education at DSU for 15 years. Spring quoted her father ' s most inspiring advice, Always push to do your best. Don ' t be afraid to take the challenge. Spring has had the opportunity of expe- riencing many facets of DSU. She is the child of a faculty member, a Cleveland resident student, and now a teach- er. She has participated in many activities at DSU such as Delta Models, Pike calender girl, homecoming maid, and the Miss Mississippi USA pageant, which brought her to the top 10 and won her the Miss Amity award: an honor bestowed to the girl that made the best impression on the other contestants. Spring is also involved in ODE, SAA, RUF core group, and the American Marketing Assoc. Her favorite activity at DSU is being A Delta Diplomat, which is a group involved in recruiting and greeting newcomers. The group was started by Dean Riley and Wayne Blansett. Spring ' s biggest goal as Miss Mississippi was to pro- mote clogging in Mississippi. With this talent, she car- ried away a non-finalist award for talent. In addition to Spring ' s activities on campus, she en- joys canoeing, kayaking, mountain climbing, modeling, cross stitching, and camping trips with her dad. Her appreciation for the support from DSU, Phi Mu, the Cleveland community, and her family show in her eagerness to serve and help in any capacity that she is able. Spring wants to attend graduate school at Clemson, S.C., where she hopes to join a clogging team. She also wants to spend time traveling in France. COACH JIM RED PARKER Delia Slate University ' s football program has been under the colorful and spirited leadership of Jim Red Parker for the past six seasons. The 23-year veteran college coach has been successful wherever he has directed the football program. The Hampton, Arkansas, native whose background including head coaching stints at Fordyce, Ark., High School, Arkansas A W, The Citadel, and Clemson, brought an exciting, inspiring brand of football with him to Delta State and a heart full of dedication. He came to Delta State in December, 1981, after serving as head coach at Southern Arkansas University in 1 98 1 . He guided the SAU Muleriders to an 8-3 record and a 1 4th place ranking in the NAIA Division I poll. In his first year at the DSU helm, he guided the Statesmen to a 6-4 ledger in 1982, their first winning season since 1975. He was named Coach of the Year by the Jackson Daily News that fall for helping turn the DSU football program around. The Statesmen had managed only two wins the previous season. Parker notched his 100th collegiate coaching win with a 35-3 victory over West Georgia College in the second game of the 1983 season. On September 5, 1987, Parker ' s Statesmen upset the Salukis of Southern Illinois. In the eyes of many who have followed DSU football, this was the school ' s biggest victory ever. Parker ' s career college coaching record is 127-107-8. Parker earned the Bachelor ' s of Arts degree in Physical Ed- ucation from Arkansas A M in 1953. Prior to his graduation, he received three letters each in the sports of football, baseball, and track. Parker is a gifted and talented speaker, having been the guest at local and area civic clubs. He has served as a guest panelist at the Mississippi Association of Coaches annual meet- ing as well. He has been guest speaker at the Greenville, S.C., Touchdown Club since taking over at Delta State. Parker is married to the former Betty Goggans of Rison, Ark., and they are the parents of three children — Mrs. Vicki Wal- lace, Mrs. Cindy Loos, and Jim Mack. 3 7 % The Battle for the Bell M. COACH DAVE BOO FERRISS DELTA STATE ' S FERRISS NAMED TO COACHES HALL OF GAME CLEVELAND — Delta State University veteran baseball coach Dave Boo Ferriss and five others were inducted into the American Hall of Fame on January 9 in Atlanta, Georgia. This is certainly a proud moment, not just for me, but also for the baseball program at Delta State, Ferriss said on learning of his selection. It is a tribute to all the fine young men I ' ve been privileged to coach for 25 years. The years have been enjoyable and rewarding, and I am humbled to be included in this select group. A 25-year coaching veteran Ferriss has compiled a 595-374-8 record, all at Delta State. He is the second winningest Division II baseball coach in the nation. He has directed DSU teams to the NCAA Division II playoffs in seven of the last 1 1 years, including three trips to the College World Series, where the Statesmen finished third, second, and third respectively in 1977, 1978, and 1982. Gulf South Conference championships came in 1978, 1979, and 1985, with the Statesmen finishing second in 1981 and third in 1982. Ferriss also has earned several honors for his coaching accomplishments. Last year he received the United States Baseball Federation ' s Service Award for his contributions to the game. He has been named NCAA Regional Coach of the Year three times while earning GSC coaching honors three times. In 1978 and 1982 he was selected as College Baseball Coach of the Year in Mississippi and was runner-up in that category in 1985. Under his direction, 18 Statesmen players have earned All-American honors and 17 have continued their baseball careers on a professional level. Ferriss, a graduate of Mississippi State, was signed by the Boston Red Sox after his junior year of college, and the lanky right-hander broke into professional baseball with Greensboro (N.C.) of the Piedmont League in 1942. After military service, he joined the Boston Red Sox in 1945 and was named Rookie of the Year with a 21-10 record. He defeated each American League team the first time he faced them and his first two major league starts were winning shutouts. In 1946, Ferriss was the American League ' s No. 1 pitcher with a 25-6 record and he pitched the Red Sox to a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1946 World Series. His major league record was 65- 30, and he still holds several major league pitching standards. Following a career cut short by an arm injury, he served as Red Sox pitching coach for five seasons before coming to Delta State in 1959 as athletic director and baseball coach. In early 1967, he left Delta State to become assistant athletic director at Mississippi State, but he returned some 18 months later as Director of the DSU Foundation, a position he held until his retirement this month (June 1987). He returned to baseball coaching duties in 1970. Ferriss is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Mississippi Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. He is married to the former Miriam Izard of New Hebron and they are the parents of two children. Walker In Memory of — Mary Elizabeth Oltremari GROWING UP by Mayer Oltremari Thinking of my life and what will be what will my life mean to me? Stirs hopes and dreams inside of me will I only wish what I could be? But it also brings new doubt and fears, Qr will I be able to smile and say As they pass; those childhood years. Y ou lived your life in the best possible way. Thoughts of a little girl on her daddy ' s lap, or her thumb in her mouth taking a nap. Or a giggling girl with a silly crush on her face, often finding a blush. But I ' m not a little girl anymore, toon I must face the future and what s in store. Thoughts go around in my mind. One says, Grow up and don ' t look behind. But deep down in my heart I know the child I was is the part of me I will cherish in the years ahead Even though I ' ll be grown up instead. It ' s time to grow up and it ' s what I must go through, But growing up is so very hard to do. Ads Lawrence Sheet Metal Works N. Sharpe Ave. P.O.
