Leroy Morganti The 1987 BROOM Staff takes extreme pride in dedicating this year ' s annual to Mr. Leroy Morganti, Delta State ' s Director of Public Information. The impact of his presence at our university has been a positive one on students and the institution as a whole. Students find a warm, congenial person with whom they can relate, while staff, faculty and administration often rely on him with confidence for his communicative skills, political savvy and extensive knowledge and ex- perience in public relations. Mr. Morganti ' s own confidence in the students of Delta State as competent, intelligent young adults is evident in the attitude he takes toward The Delta Statement and Broom staffs. We appreciate this. Leroy Morganti first came to DSU as Director of Public Information in July, 1970. After six years, he left to serve as Press Secretary to then Governor Cliff Finch. He re- turned to his previous position at Delta State in 1979. While there are people who might adequately fill the job of Public Information Director, no one could match his willingness to serve, his dedication to his job, and most of all his love for Delta State. To you, Mr. Morganti, we say thank you for an outstanding job. OPA! . , CAMPOS LIFE szzra i JH m3 n _ i Bi 1 — — = — — — _ _ ' • 1 22sJ Life on Campus Is Full of Fun! The program is to help the faculty participate in lectures and seminars without having the expense of leaving campus. said Dr. John Thornell. Director of Institutional Research and head of this program He says the program originated in response to this year ' s budget cuts in faculty travel. Twelve different sessions have been scheduled for this school year Only one session has been held so far It was Writing Across the Curriculum by David Roberts. English Pro- fessor from the University of Southern Mississippi- He was in- vited to speak by Dr. Jerry Dallas, a DSU instructor. All other speakers will be DSU faculty members. Some topics for discussion are Improving Classroom Tests. CPR Training, Stress Management. Weight Measurement, and The topics were chosen through a survey and were ones the faculty would be most interested in. stated Dr. Thornell. The faculty members that were asked to participate in the discussions had no objections or disagreements. Nancy Bain, who works with Dr. Thornell. said. Faculty development is a great opportunity to broaden the horizon, since there is not enough money to travel, and it gives faculty members the chance to shine in areas outside of the Although the program is £ with it, Dr. Thornell pointed time available for all faculty members of the sessions are held in the aftern problem for those who have afternoon To keep the faculty aware of the me vided each month to inform them of make plans to attend the ones of the 1 ess there are some problems Such problems are finding a bers to attend and that most CLASSES CO CD +- CO CO l-M a CO CD co CO I— a • CO CD CO -a co a CO CD co D -o co a • CO CD co T3 CO i— a • CO CD +- CO D CO a CO (D +- co -o co a Graduates • Graduates • Graduates • Graduates • Graduate:] Donna Allen Lyon Bellipani lndlanola Jimmy Booth J; Booth Cleveland Leslie Chunn Jack Burnice Currey Shaw Fred Do mow itz Castle ford Robert Dorch Pensacola. The Baptist Student Union at Delta State was organized November 4, 1929. Since it ' s beginning, three things have characterized Baptist Student (Jnion. These characteristics are the Baptist Student (Jnion is Christ Centered, Church related and Stu- dent Led. For several years following its organiza- tion, the Baptist Student (Jnion at Delta State was carried on primarily by students with some assistance by Baptist faculty members and a local pastor. The first Director of the Baptist Student Onion at Delta State was Rev. Riley Munday who assumed this respon- sibility in 1946. Mr. Munday served until 1948 and was succeeded by Miss Dot Lee Jefferson, later to become Mrs. John Merrill, who served until 1949. Following Mrs. Mer- rill ' s resignation, Rev. Roy S. Isbell came to Delta State as BS(J Director and served until 1951. In the fall of 1955, Rev. James A. Breland began his tenure as BS(J Director and continues in that position in 1986. Until the summer of 1960, the Baptist Stu- dent Union conducted its program and the BSU Director had an office on campus in col- lege facilities. In 1960 a large dwelling at 903 S. Court Street in Cleveland, which was pur- chased and renovated by the Mississippi Baptist Convention, was occupied as the Baptist Student Center. This building con- tinued to be used until 1977 when it became inadequate. At that time the building was removed and construction was begun on a beautiful and adequate Baptist Student Center which was occupied by the Baptist Student Union in April, 1979. Baptist Student Union emphasizes the IN- WARD JOURNEY of spiritual growth through Worship, Study Fellowship, Churchmanship and Stewardship. It emphasizes the OUT- WARD JOURNEY of Christian service through Witness, Missions, Ministry, Social Action and International Students. Under the direction of Dixie Lee Wright, herself a pro- fessional model, the 1986-1987 Delta Models had another exciting year. The Delta Models made their debut this year at the annual Client Luncheon, and exclusive formal runway presentation on the DSU campus. Throughout the year they were seen modeling for a varie- ty of local businesses and organizations, including the Mississippi Republican Women ' s Conference in Greenville and a Greenville Mall fashion show. The Delta Models also worked with Channel 6 filming promotional advertisements for Rusty Blair ' s Freaky Fri- day Might Flicks. Photo sessions with some of the south ' s finest professional photographers are an essential part of the models ' schedule, since they hope to put together a Delta Models calendar next year. Each model is also responsible for building his or her own professional portfolio. Last year the Delta Models were the first group to be featured on a headsheet poster which was printed and distributed to clients in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Since then, they have steadily expanded their talents into the commercial, video, and movie industry. Many models can be seen in commercials for the Greenville, Jackson, and Memphis areas. Several Delta Models have already signed exclusive contracts with modeling agencies in Memphis to further promote their careers as professional models. MM FEATURES MISS DSG Makes it BIG! Holly Hollingsworth For Emily Michelle Russell, the reigning Miss DS(J, dreams of winning big were realized this past July: she was dubbed first runner-up at the 1986 Miss Mississippi pageant in Vicksburg. She competed in four categories: swimsuit, evening gown, talent, and interview. On stage, she is the very picture of confidence and grace. But her trip to the top was not easy. The most important thing is to be prepared, the 5 foot 7 inch, green-eyed blonde insists. If you are well-prepared then you can relax and let your natural talent come through. But that inner glow, that something special comes from believing in yourself, thinking positively, and overcoming fears. Then if you don ' t bring home the crown you have won over the fear of failure. Weeks of strenuous preparation were necessary to ready Emily for the Miss America preliminary pageant. Five mile jogs, laps in the pool, weight training, and dance aerobics were part of her everyday routine, in addition to song practices (she sang Didn ' t We? by Jimmy Webb for the talent competi- tion), fittings, and mock interviews. So many doors have opened for me since I won the Miss DSG pageant, not to mention the chance for the big crown. What advice does she give to other pageant hopefuls? The only way you can accomplish anything is to believe that you can. You are the only one who can make a difference. You can let disappointments defeat you or you can find your good points and make them better. Emily is a 20 year old senior at Delta State majoring in interior design. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and is a past member of Renaissance. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Russell of Cleveland. ■B 1 r Emily Russell Miss Delta State University Miss D.S.CJ. ' v RE vN rv i Delta State sophomore running back Gwaine Matthews ran for two touchdowns and Londale Bankston another to pace the Statesmen to a 21-10 upset win over arch-rival Mississippi Col- lege on a muddy Robinson-Hale Field Saturday night. The victory gave coach Red Parker ' s Statesmen a 6-4-1 season and a 4-3-1 ledger in the Gulf South Conference and the Heritage Bell Trophy returns to the DSCJ campus for another year. Despite quarterback Keith Williams ' suffering a severely sprained right ankle on the third play from scrimmage on Delta State ' s initial posses- sion, the Gulfport senior directed his team on three key scoring drives. After Mississippi College had taken a 10-0 lead in the second quarter on the strength of halfback Prentiss Baker ' s one-yard run and a 20-yard Chuck May field goal, DSCI battled back to within three points after Bankston ' s one-yard plunge with 13 seconds left in the half. Facing a fourth down and 14 situation after a six-yard sack, Williams tossed a pass to flanker Todd Moultrie who was interfered with at the Mississippi College 13. Williams, who found split end Kevin Locastro for a 31-yard gainer earlier in the series, hit the Memphis (Bishop Byrne) sophomore with an 1 1-yard pass to the one. Two plays later Bankston dived over and Jamie Greer booted the point after to cut the MC lead to 10-7 at the half. Football has always been a game of breaks, Parker said, referring to two pass interference calls against the Choctaws which set up DSCJ scores and a 29-yard run by punter Keith Shumaker to set up the last touchdown. There are 11 players on the other side committed to make your team make mistakes. There were none (mistakes) that hurt us, but Keith ' s (Williams) only interception (in the first quarter) could have, Parker added. Mississippi College had a hard time moving the ball. They had the right game plan, but our defense was fantastic, great. Parker said the game conditions were one thing, but the immobility of Williams, the GSC ' s passing and total offense leader were another. What can you do with a one-legged quarterback? he asked the media present. After a scoreless third quarter, Delta State marched 51 yards in eight plays with Matthews ' getting his first touchdown. Again, Williams tried to hit Moultrie at the Choctaw 3 2 and MC cornerback Rodney Quinn was whistled for pass interference on a third and six call. Williams followed script and found Locastro wide open for a 20-yard gain to the 1 1 and Matthews carried the ball three straight times, scoring from the two with 8:55 left in the game. On Delta State ' s next possession, punter Shumaker fielded a low snap from center John Wood and raced down the left sideline for 29 yards and a first down at the MC nine. They (MC) had been ignoring the fake punt and when the snap was low and caught them off-stride, Keith decided it was there and he decided to go w ii It (with my approval), Parker explained. Mattht; one yard plunge with 67 seconds left in the game iced the third DSC1 win over the Choctaws in the last four meetings. The two teams bati a 14-14 tie last year in Cleveland. Bankston Is on 20 carries led the Statesmen and Matthews finished with 41 on 17 carries. Williams, the Gulf South Conference ' s passing and tc e leader going into the game, completed eight of 17 passes for 108 yards. Runningback -fter had five catches for only 26 yards, while the GSC ' s leading receiver Tony Eddins managed only three catches for six yards. Potter ' s on 15 attempts paced the Choc ground attack. Delta State lineb. ie Cates had 12 tackles, while linebacker Carl Dobbs, tackle Kelvin ?°ese and end Lamar Aldridge were credited with seven each. Con - nte Dickerson intercepted two Henry passes to give him five thefts for the season. Reese also had a pass sack. The loss left Mississ. = 7-4 for the season and 5-3 in the GSC. STATESMEN BASEBALL OJ..1A1J ! Delta State University baseball fans think of one man when the sport is mentioned in sports circles — Dave Boo Ferris. After all, in 24 seasons he has won 567 games, directed his teams to the NCAA Divisions II playoffs in seven of the last nine years including three trips to the College World Series where the Statesmen finished third, second and third respectively in 1977, 1978, and 1982. His teams won NCAA regional championships those three years as well. Ferris ' Statesmen rallied to win the Gulf South Conference North Division title in dramatic fashion. They then went on to Troy, Ala., to defeat the Troy State team in two straight games to capture the overall conference crown in 1985. Consecutive GSC championships came in 1978 and 1979, with the Statesmen finishing second in 1981 and third in 1982. Ferris has been named NCAA Regional Coach of the Year three seasons. In 1978 and 1982 he was selected as College Baseball Coach of the Year in Mississippi and was runner-up in the category for 1985. tinder his direction seventeen Delta State baseball players have earned All-American honors and sixteen have an overall record of 567 wins, 332 losses and eight ties. Ferris, a graduate of Mississippi State, was signed by the Boston Red Sox after his junior year of college, and the lanky right-hander broke in- to professional baseball with Greensboro (N.Y.) of the Piedmont League in 1942. After military service he joined the Boston Red Sox in 1945 and was named Rookie of the Year with a 21-10 record. He defeated every American League team the first time he faced them, and his first two major league starts were winning shutouts. In 1981, then rookie sensation Fernado Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers tied Ferris ' 36-yr-old record of 8 consecutive wins at the start of a career. In 1946 Ferris was the American League ' s number one pit- cher with a 25-6 record and he pitched with the Red Sox to a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1946 World Series. His major league record was 65-30 and he still holds several major league pitching standards. Following a career cut short by an arm injury, Boo served as Red Sox ' s pitching coach for five seasons before coming to Delta State in 1959 as Athletic Director and baseball coach. In early 1967 he left Delta State to become assistant Athletic Director at Mississippi State, but he returned some 18 months later as director of the Delta State University Foundation, a position he still holds. He returned to his coaching duties in 1970. 1986 FALL SCHEDULE Sept. 13 Shelby State CC (2) Home 12:00 Sept. 17 Northwest JC Away 2:00 Sept. 20 East Miss. JC (2) Home 12:00 Sept. 23 Northeast Miss. Dr. Brad Hovious, in his tenth year as Delta State University ' s athletic director, has established himself as one of the leading administrators in college athletics in the South. One of his major accomplishments in his brief time at Delta State came during his first month on the job (July, 1977) when he expanded the Athletic Booster avenues to contribute to the overall athletic program. Dr. Hovious has also been involved in leadership role with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Association for Intercollegiate Athletic for Women (AIAW). He served tw o years as Basket- ball Committee as well as coordinator of Mississippi AIAW championships. He is a former member of the NCAA Division II football advisory committee and has served as tournament director for both NCAA and AIAW regional tournament events. He served as tournament director during the 1981 and 1985 Gulf South Conference baseball playoffs. Dr. Hovious ' background has prepared him well for the challenges and responsibilities of directing a col- legiate athletic program. A former basketball and tennis player at the University of Mississippi, he holds the B.S. and M.E. degrees from Ole Miss as well as the M.E. degree in Sports Administration from Ohio Universi- ty, considered by many to be the top school in the country offering a degree in that field. MS; 99 Editor ' s Closing Being Editor of the Broom has been one of the most challenging jobs I have ever had and I loved every minute of it. I am glad I was able to serve the student body of D.S.CJ. and I would do it again in a second! I owe a big thanks to Rachel Brown, Jody Correro, Peggy Sledge, and especially Mr. Leroy Morganti. Many thanks goes out to my editors: Aimee, Missy, Holly, Jennifer, and Richard for all their hard work and dedication. To the Broom staff, I say thanks a million! All of you have done an excellent job. A special thanks goes to Tammylee, a fantastic Business Manager, a sacrificing roommate, and a faithful friend. I will always have a special place in my heart for you. Personal thanks goes to Casey who has always been there for me in the good times as well as the bad. Your patience and understanding have meant the world to me. It will take a lifetime to repay all that you have done for me. As you look through these pages, I hope it will bring fond memories of times you spent here at L State. For I know I am a part of Delta State and Delta State will always be a part of me. Thanks for a Great year! Melissa Porter Editor 1987 Broom I I SI
