H. L. Nowell The Editor and Staff take great pride in dedicating this year ' s BROOM to a gentleman who has had a very positive impact on the lives of hundreds of Delta State University students during the past 40 years. In doing so, we acknowledge with gratitude and devotion the exemplary service of Mr. H. L. Nowell to the University community, and especially to the students. It is impossible in this limited space to adequately recount the contributions made by H in the variety of responsibilities he has held over the past four decades. One former student would want us to say that H.L. paid his way through school for several semesters when financial problems threatened to force the student to withdraw. Another would want us to know that H.L. bought him his first sports coat when he needed one for an official school function but could not afford the cost. A third student would recall that H.L. bought his class ring as a reward for good work as a student employee. Another would want us to include that he made it through college only because H.L. cared enough to pester me to death about my grades until it ultimately became easier for me Jp study and pass than to face H.L. M These are all true stories, but they represent only a fraction of the instances where H. L. Nowell went beyond mere duty to help the students of Delta State, many times using his own money and resources to do so. You could add to the examples above the thanks of coufjitless students who became better persons because of their association with this man. Through the years, H.L. has served Delta State as Dean of Men, Director of Public Relations, Director of Student Activities, cheerleader sponsor, dormitory supervisor, property control officer, arid most recently, Director of The Union. Through these and other activities, he has become the administrator most closely identified with the students of this university. H. L. Nowell has lived and loved Delta State for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for almost 40 years. Although it seems incredibly inadequate, the students of this institution — both past and present — wish to show our appreciation for all H. L. has done for and meant to Delta State by dedicating this year ' s BROOM in his honor. 16 w {0 [ _ ' 1 g 1 f . 1 ■ w — L_!J r vL3l H B - ' ' DELTA PLArHOUSE presents E SQUARERO OF WIVE ACOOOTIWE FOR CHANGE BATftJNG I USUI W 1 UTINGFO O GO ECUP. Various activities were conducted through out the week by the cheerleaders. Tuesday was designated as sweats -n- buttons day. Spirit races were held on the quadrangle Wednesday, which included a sack race, a one-mile bicycle race, and a two-mile run. Following the races there was a quadrangle pep rally. The traditional bon fire was held Thursday night, and Friday night ' s mid-night pep rally had a pajama theme. A 5K Fun Run was sponsored Homecoming morning by the Alumni Association. The Alumnae also gave a cash prize for the find er of a spirit football which was hidden to be found during the week by clues posted each day. A Final pep rally was held homecoming morning before the Union which many parents and alumnae attended. Then, of course was the climax — the pre- game activities and the Statesmen victory against UT Martin. .%.• i The 1985 Gong Show Hosted by Bud Melman At top. Lisa Lee Meeks sings her way to first place in the talent show. The 6th annual DSU day at Wendy ' s was held on September 26, 1 985. Once again this year coupons were passed out by different organizations on campus. The Phi Mu ' s had the most coupons honored, making them the winner of first prize. There were several contests held, including the hamburger eating contests which were won by Jill Jones and Randy Hutchinson. The talent competition was won by Lisa Lee Meeks. To add to the fun, the DSU Pom Pon Squad performed before the contests, and afterwards the cheerleaders gave a great pep rally. All the activities combined helped boost spirit among the students and lead the Statesmen to a 20-16 victory over Southeast Missouri. A T W E N D Y S 9 AL. On April 1 8, 1 985, DSU held its annual Springfest activities. There were events scheduled to suit every taste. Several different campus groups performed throughout the day. Included were the DSU percussion group, Black Student Organization Choir, and the Black Sororities and Fraternities amazed everyone with their witty rhymes and steppin ' . Butterfly Man dazzled everyone with his magic show. The bands Basic Boyz and the female group, Anzel, warmed the crowds up for an afternoon cook-out on the quad. Xavion, a rock group from Memphis, ended the Springfest activities. As usual, Springfest was a day filled with fun, food, and, of course, mosquito bites. DELTA COUNCIL DAY PROGRAM May 24, 1985 B. A. The meeting was filled with business, speeches and fun for those in attendance. Delta Council members elected new of- ficers and adopted resolutions dealing with agricultural, industrial and educational issues. Merigold, Mississippi native Larry Speakes, chief spokesman for President Ronald Reagan, delivered the keynote address during the afternoon session of the annual meeting. It is humbling experience for a young man from Terigold to address the prestigious Delta Council, Speakes told the crowd. On the lighter side of the annual meeting, the members were treated to a show display- ing cotton fashions. The state Department of Agriculture and Commerce cooked catfish lunches for the crowd of about a thousand. Sunflower County native W. T. Robertson was elected president of the council. He will be assisted by Cleveland residents Ed Kossman Jr. and Mrs. Alyce Richardson, who were elected to vice president positions on the Delta Council executive board. The tie killed the 12th-ranked Choctaws ' hopes for an NCAA Division 2 postseason playoff and a share of the GSC title. DSU head coach Red Parker was pleased with his team ' s playing intensity. I was real happy the way we played hard all the way, he said. Mississippi College scored first when the Choctaws ' tailback Rex Everett ran 1 3 yards on pitch from quarterback David Hopper with 4:08 left in the first half. Chuck May ' s point- after conversion made it 7-0, a lead MC held at the half. The Statesmen tied the score on its first possession of the second half when quarterback Keith Williams moved his team 89 yards in 1 1 plays and finished it with a 4-yard pass to split end Kyle Finney for the six-pointer. Delta State took a 1 4-7 lead on its last posses- sion of the third quarter with Williams direct- ing his team 61 yards in nine plays. He hit tight end Arrike James with a 30-yard pass to the Choctaw 6 to set up the score. Two plays later, running back Michael Zanders dived over from a yard out and Dardaman ' s PAT followed with 21 seconds remaining. MC came back to tie it with 5:02 left when running back Clyde Shelley, who gained 125 yards on 30 carries, scored over right guard from a yard out to cap a 1 3 play, 84-yard drive. His background has prepared him well for the challenge and responsibilities of directing a collegiate athletic program. A former basketball and tennis player at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Hovious holds the B.S. and M.E. degrees from Ole Miss as well as the M.E. degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University. Barry Brickman Barry Brickman is in his fourth year as head coach of the Lady Statesmen. He took over in the Fall of 1982 and has compiled a career record of 56 wins and 37 losses. He is a firm believer in the student-athlete, con- stantly stressing academics to his players. When Brickman is not coaching he serves 1 as an Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director. He is a 1981 graduate of Ohio University with a Master ' s Degree in Sports Administration and current- ly is working toward the Master ' s of Business Ad- ministration Degree at Delta State University. The tougher the com- petition, the sweeter the victory. The Players Returning starters this year include Cheryl Brittain, Kathy White, Denise Dempsey, Dawn Cooper, Coleen Fay and Susan Sims. Cheryl is an All Conference shortstop with great defensive skills. Her range and strong arm enable her to adapt easily to the fast-pitch game. Kathy is also an All Conference performer at second base. Her fielding abilities and competitive spirit will be valuable assets in the fast-pitch game. Denise will be returning to a game she grew up with and played in high school. An outfielder, she has good speed to run down fly balls and steal bases. Dawn saw duties as a catcher last year, however, this year she will probably see action in the outfield. A tough com- petitor who loves to win. Coleen returns at first base after having a good season last year. She possesses an excellent glove and has the mental toughness it takes to play in close to the b atter in the fast-pitch game. Susan will also be returning to a more familiar game. A steady per- former, she has a strong arm and can play both third base and outfield. Several newcomers will be counted on heavily this year to provide a solid foundation for a new fast-pitch program. Good pitchers are a key to fast-pitch and Lisa Baker and Melisa Staf- ford will share this responsibility. Both will see action in the field when not pitching. Lisa is a transfer from Harding University who pitched in 8 games her freshman year. She possesses good control of her pitches and can also hit the ball to all fields. Melisa is a freshman who has grown up playing in the Memphis youth leagues. A terrific athlete, she can play the infield with equal ability. Catching will be handled by Kelley Cobb and Cindy Welch. Kelley is a transfer from Columbia State Community College where she played one season. An excellent defensive catcher, she loves to talk to the batters. Cindy is a freshman from Memphis who came to the program in January. A versatile player, she will be counted on as a catcher and back-up at first base. Newcomers to the outfield include Sharon Rogers, Kellie Ghettie and Annette Petty. Sharon is a native of Pascagoula and has learned the fast-pitch game by playing in the Dixie Youth programs. She has tremendous speed and a strong arm and loves to play the game. Both Kellie and Annette are walk-ons from Southaven who did an excellent job in our fall program. Both can hit and will see some action in the outfield. Other newcomers to the infield who will see duty include Sherri Holmquist and Amy Davis. Sherri is also a transfer from Columbia State where she played two years. She can play third base, short stop, or first base and has a quick throw and provides offensive firepower at the plate. Amy comes to the program from Granbury, Texas. She grew up in Southaven playing in the Memphis youth leagues so she has a good background in the game. She can also play in-field positions and has good speed. m ' Tr .T ' [ r ] 3 %? 1 t I SU Soccer Team Marcel Clements. A senior majoring in criminal justice, Steve says, I have met and worked with many wonderful people and mascots in the course of my duties as Mr. Statesman, and that makes all the hard work worthwhile. My favorite parts of be- ing Mr. Statesman are working with the crowds to entertain them, as well as working with the kids. Regarded as one of the best mascots in the Gulf South Conference, Steve has received numerous awards at mascot camps and has still been able to maintain a grade point average which has put him on the Dean ' s List, the President ' s List, and made him a Delta Scholar. Despite a demanding schedule, full of diverse duties, the fifth presi- dent of Delta Slate is still accessible and personable. As one DSU stu- dent recently observed, . . . his office door is always open, whether for discussing any difficulties or just to visit. This is just one example of how Dr. Wyatt has made himself available to students and their concerns. We believe this is not the norm; a fact Delta State students can take pride in. Ron Burnham and Susi Iversen were involved in the exchange program and spent a semester at Westfield. We welcome Ron and Susi back home and we hope the Westfield students have enjoyed our great Southern Hospitality!! Ell Douglas Is Delta State ' s First Writer in Residence Ellen Douglas Mississippi author Ellen Douglas became Delta State University ' s first writer in residence during January and February, 1986. Initiated by the DSU Department of Languages and Literature, Mrs. Douglas ' stay at Delta State was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, by the DSU Special Programs Committee and private donations. During her residence at Delta State, Douglas (a pseudonym for Josephine Haxton) lectured and conducted seminars on two of her novels, A Lifetime Burning and The Rock Cried Out. She also held a workshop with 20 selected local writers and their short fiction. The workshops focused on plotting, effective characterization and dialogue. Douglas, who has authored six books including the National Book Award nominee, Apostles of Light, began publishing her work in 1961. Today she devotes hers elf exclusively to writing and teaching fiction. Born in Natchez, and a long-time resident of Greenville, Douglas has recently moved to Jackson where she is at work on a new novel. Said DSU Professor of English Terry Everett of Douglas, Ellen Douglas is not only a great writer of fiction who has not yet attained the recognition that she deserves, but is a great reader of fiction in both the sense of public performance and a knowledge of the history of fiction. On top of all that she is a great teacher of fiction. . ■ ■ • ' A ■■. -■ ' . v ' ■■■ ;.-; ' . Markl Lesley I Dale Ross Kdlou B Bashington hisjrtan Mine The Broom Staff i BB£ This book with all its faces and flaws was a true labor of love. It took time, lots of time, patience and perseverance. A Big Thanks goes to everyone who made this yearbook possible, though there seemed few in number at times, a feeling of determination and dedication overpowered it all. My deepest and most heartfelt appreciation goes to the faculty advisor, Rachel Brown, who was always there (except on the plane to Dallas!). Her pictures, creativity, and hard work were never- ending. A big thanks also goes to Leroy Morganti, Jody Correro and Cheryl Ballard in the Public Information Office. T Yearbooks rely on people to make them special and it takes special people to work so hard, so 1 extend a special thank you to Melissa Porter, Penny Bright, Lori Williams, Tammy Lee, Julie Tullos, and of course my family and fiance, without whose love and support I couldn ' t have survived the trying times of deadline! My wish is that your days at Delta State will be fondly remembered as you look through this book and after the years have long yellowed these pages you will still feel the love and effort put into the 1985-86 Broom.
