' : ' ;■' ■SsS S A TIME FOR The staff of the 1985 Broom takes great pride in dedicating this year ' s an- nual to Dr. Forest Kent Wyatt, President of Delta State University. In doing so, we recognize the outstanding advancement of the University under Dr. Wyatt ' s guidance during the past decade. Enhancement of academic quality, new and improved student services, record enrollment growth, and major con- struction programs have marked the administration of Delta State ' s fifth president. The University is proud to have a recognized administrator of higher education to guide its destiny, and equally proud that he is a product of this institution. Dr. Wyatt grew up on the Delta State campus, coming here at the age of 1 2 when his late father joined the faculty of the Physical Education Department. After graduation from Cleveland High School, he received the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from what was then Delta State College. The Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees were later added to his academic credentials. Following service as a school teacher, coach and prin- cipal, he returned to Delta State in 1964 to become the institution ' s first full- time Alumni Secretary. In 1969, he was appointed Administrative Assistant to the President, and was elected President of Delta State in 1975. His first 10 years earned him a reputation as a firm but fair leader who placed the quality of the educational offerings of Delta State in the forefront, followed closely by a sincere concern for the individual welfare and advance- ment of each student. His success in those endeavors can be measured by the increased recognition of Delta State ' s academic programs and the larger number of students choosing to attend here each year. As Delta State University enters its sixth decade of service to the youth of this area, Dr. Kent Wyatt will be entering his second as president. We are confident that each has the qualities to continue this institution ' s advance- ment toward academic and overall excellence. She was one of the many highlights of 1 984 Homecoming Week. The concert began at 7:30 and tickets were $7 for students and $8 at the door. Sheena ' s hits included Almost Over You , For Your Eyes Only , Morning Train , and the latest hit from her new album Strut. Marjorie Akers, President of the Student Government Association, told the Miss Delta that since Ms. Easton was appearing in Mem- phis her agent called local schools to arrange concerts. Altogether Sheena Easton cost $27,000 for publicity and stage preparations. All in all the concert was a success. ' For Your Eyes Only ' Strut Almost Over You u Morning Train P He P fmnm 1 ,F Snow Snow Snow It makes for beautiful scenery on the way to class and pro- vides frustration release through snow-ball throwing. After three days of Delta rain, the temperatures dropped below 20 degrees, making an icy foundation for the four inches of snow that soon followed. DSU got its share of bad weather this year, but the school stayed open. On-campus residents at- tended class as usual, but occasionally a merciful teacher ex- cused everyone because of the massive lack of commuter classmates. Drive-in students enjoyed a three-day mid-winter vacation while dorm students risked their lives and limbs to pursue their education. Treking through the icy snow wasn ' t as bad as swimming across a flooded quadrangle, but it called for a new set of wilderness survival tactics. Neither Gibson ' s or K-Mart stocked snow skiis, so lots of duck shoes and moth-eaten worn- once-a-year snow boots were pulled out of closets to keep feet warm and dry. Vogue was not as much an issue as were pneumonia and frostbite. Cars were embalmed in frozen parking spots and wind- shields dared sledgehammers to remove the ice from view. White drifts piled up against tires to keep the cars from going anywhere. This was definitely an unusual experience for DSU: short- ened classes, 20-minute trudges to class, and full parking lots on the weekend. Thanks, Jack Frost, for not leaving us off of your cross- country blizzard visit, but enough is enough! 5th Annual DSU Mahi Cossifis, Beth Disharoon, Edith Skage, Jerri Travis, Marjori Akers are presented with a microwave for recruiting the most people to eat at Wendy ' s. Bonnie Luker participated in the Talent Show. The 5th annual DSU Day at Wendy ' s was held dur- ing Homecoming Week this year, and it rained again of course. Coupons were passed out for meals and the Phi Mu ' s had the most coupons honored, making them the winner of a microwave oven. Wendy Weber and Karl Hoffman took the ham- burger eating titles. It was Karl ' s second year in a row to win. Many students showed their Homecoming Spirit by feasting on burgers and fries from Wendy ' s. A pep rally following the contest helped get everyone fired up for Saturday ' s big game. Steve Ovar last year ' s winner tried again. = DELTA Vice President Bush was the keynote speaker at the 49th annual meeting of the Delta Council. The Council, a gathering of industrial and agricultural leaders from the 18-county Delta area packed the Walter Sillers Coliseum to hear Bush at their May 31, 1984 meeting. The Vice President expressed the urgent n eed for free international trade, saying that open markets are essential to a stable, peaceful world order. The key to lasting peace and a real arms reduction is a strong self-confident America. Bush claimed the Reagan administration was determined to keep America firm and strong in foreign affairs through simple, down-home common sense. Reagan ' s administration is committed to having a farm bill that will prevent disaster, such as soar- ing prices, production explosions, and market col- lapses. Bush said that the global outlook of Delta farmers reveal their understanding that political and economic stability cannot be achieved in a weak world. The new Doctor of Education plans to work eventually in the field of curriculum development but her current goals are geared toward serv- ing as a consultant in public schools, an activity she has already begun. With her two and one-half year task successfully completed, Mrs. Moore admits to having withdrawal pains. Sometimes I suddenly realize that I have time for other things that I had to forgo when I was completing my course work and dissertation, she said. Those other things include numerous civic and church activities and hobbies that she had to put on the back burner while a full-time student in the doctoral program. Mrs. Moore ' s dissertation was directed by Dr. Jane Weare. professor of research at DSU, who described her student as one in whom in the university can claim with pride as its first doctoral graduate. Be it participation in the stands at ballgames, parades, pep rallies, or on the field at halftime, the band exhibited the utmost in pride and excellence of performance. The fall marching festival that is sponsored by the band department was a big success for the high school bands involved. Each of the goals set by the department and by the members of the band were attained as the season unfolded into a successful year. Through the use of modern drill designs and effective presentation of dance line and color guard work, the band is an important teaching laboratory for students of music at Delta State. This combination of elements, along with the fine work and support of the faculty and administration, makes Delta State one of the finest bands and music programs in the state. It has taught me responsibility and given me the opportunity to meet many special people that I would not otherwise have known. I owe several friends a big Thank You. They helped me through some tough spots. Gratitude goes to William Freeman — Assistant Editor, Keith King — Business Manager, Hal Beckham, Jenny Morris, Kalhy Gaston, Penny Bright, Laura Pentecost, and David Rhymes. A special thank you goes to Gil Baker and Beth Shapley for making the pictures available. I also appreciate George Copeland our representative from Taylor Publishing Company who was there to help us extend deadlines when we needed a little extra time. The Public Information Office houses some wonderful people. 1 could not have done it without Lcroy Morganti, Jody Correro — for all the cutlines, and Rachel Brown — Faculty Advisor. My deepest gratitude goes to Rachel Brown who helped me so much. It was a learning experience for both of us. We both worked really, really hard to make this yearbook a success. As you look through the pages of this annual, we hope you will remember some good times that were experienced at Delta State University. DELTA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Established by legislative act in 1924 and located in Cleveland, Mississippi, a site donated by Be n September 15, To those students, teachers and staff who are now a part of Delta State ' s history, we owe great tribute. The following pages, while certainly not a visual history of Delta State ' s past, is in fond recognition and deep appreciation of all those whose footsteps went before us. The faces are not inclusive; we have doubtless omitted some friends and faculty you would like to have seen includ- ed. The omission is not intentional and while some of those names also prob- ably came to our minds as well, pictures were not always available and space is limited. We are grateful to Miss Gladys Castle who so unselfishly loaned a few of her many photographs, the result of her own work of some 50 years with Delta State, for these pages. Miss Castle has the distinction of having served the first five deans of Delta State as secretary. She retired in 1977 as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the University. Her continued devotion to DSU, and those like her, is indeed valuable. And if these few pages of DSU history arouse a thirst for more, we suggest A Pictorial History of Delta State University by Jack W. Gunn and Miss Castle. We salute you, our alma mater, Delta State!
