THE STATESMAN... Every year The Broom Staff selects one outstanding individual to whom we dedicate The Broom. However, this year we have two dedications; the first is Hugh Ellis Walker, the Statesman. Mr. Walker entered Delta State Teachers College in the Spring of 1948. By the time he graduated he had accumulated a lengthy list of accomplishments. He was president of the following organizations: Student Government Association, Miss. Intercollegiate Council, and Men ' s Honor Council, vice-president of his Junior Class and the Baptist Student Union. Other honors include, football manager, member of the tennis team, Junior Class favorite, M Club mem- ber, Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities, Tri-Beta member, and finally Mr. Delta State Teachers College. He gradu- ated in 1952 and todk a coaching job at Durant, Mississippi, but his days as a Statesman were not complete. In July, 1969, Mr. Walker took the job as Director of Alumni Affairs here at Delta State. If anyone visits the Union for any length of time, they are sure to see his smiling face; a face that has come full circle at Delta State, first as student and now an important part of the staff. This accomplishment is surely worthy of the title STATESMAN.

THE ADMINISTRATOR... The second dedication is to Dr. Jack Winton Gunn, the Adminis- trator, but most people know him as just Dean Gunn. Dean Gunn came to Delta State in 1967 and took the position as Assistant Dean of the University. He was born in Waco, Texas and received a bachelor of arts degree from Baylor in 1940. In 1947 Dr. Gunn received his master of arts degree from the University of Texas and completed his doctor of philosophy in 1951 . Before com- ing to Delta State he held positions as instructor at the University of Texas at El Paso, and Chairman of the Division of Social Studies at Mississippi College. Dean Gunn then came to Delta State. In 1968 he was promoted to his present position, Dean of the University. Now, in 1980, he plans to retire. However, Dean Gunn ' s accomplishments have not been confined to just colleges and universities. He has contributed to many books including a book, A Pictorial History of Delta State University which he co-authored. It will be out sometime this year. He is also active in many other organizations and a member of many honor societies. The students of Delta State will miss his leadership, but wish him well in future endeavors. and Mrs. Gunn were married on August 2£ 12. ■ap , ; «c
