Every year The Broom Staff selects one outstanding individual to whom we dedicate The Broom. However, this year we have two dedications; the first is Hugh Ellis Walker, the Statesman. Mr. Walker entered Delta State Teachers College in the Spring of 1948. By the time he graduated he had accumulated a lengthy list of accomplishments. He was president of the following organizations: Student Government Association, Miss. Intercollegiate Council, and Men ' s Honor Council, vice-president of his Junior Class and the Baptist Student Union. Other honors include, football manager, member of the tennis team, Junior Class favorite, M Club mem- ber, Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities, Tri-Beta member, and finally Mr. Delta State Teachers College. He gradu- ated in 1952 and todk a coaching job at Durant, Mississippi, but his days as a Statesman were not complete. In July, 1969, Mr. Walker took the job as Director of Alumni Affairs here at Delta State. If anyone visits the Union for any length of time, they are sure to see his smiling face; a face that has come full circle at Delta State, first as student and now an important part of the staff. This accomplishment is surely worthy of the title STATESMAN. THE ADMINISTRATOR... The second dedication is to Dr. Jack Winton Gunn, the Adminis- trator, but most people know him as just Dean Gunn. Dean Gunn came to Delta State in 1967 and took the position as Assistant Dean of the University. He was born in Waco, Texas and received a bachelor of arts degree from Baylor in 1940. In 1947 Dr. Gunn received his master of arts degree from the University of Texas and completed his doctor of philosophy in 1951 . Before com- ing to Delta State he held positions as instructor at the University of Texas at El Paso, and Chairman of the Division of Social Studies at Mississippi College. Dean Gunn then came to Delta State. In 1968 he was promoted to his present position, Dean of the University. Now, in 1980, he plans to retire. However, Dean Gunn ' s accomplishments have not been confined to just colleges and universities. He has contributed to many books including a book, A Pictorial History of Delta State University which he co-authored. It will be out sometime this year. He is also active in many other organizations and a member of many honor societies. The students of Delta State will miss his leadership, but wish him well in future endeavors. and Mrs. Gunn were married on August 2£ 12. ■ap , ; «c DR. This comedy about the romantic mix-ups of a 40 year old divorcee was a big success. The student cast included Tommy Morgan, Debbie Conlee, Jerome Billingsley, Lisa Baker, Don Conger, Laine Anderson, Margot Hamilton, David Williams, Judy Cox and Eddie Coleman. Understudy for Miss Dahl was Regina Rickels. R. D. Strahan was director of the play, with assistants Tina Miller and Angie Kelly. A STAR COMES TO DSU Blithe Spirit Noel Coward ' s classic comedy Blithe Spirit entertained audi- ences with the story of what happens to a sophisticated novelist and his wife when a batty spiritualist summons back the ghost of the man ' s first wife during a seance. In the cast were Cecil Schmidt, Lisa Baker, Margot Hamilton, Regina Rickels, Kendall Smith, Elaine Clarke and Sarah Algee. Director of Blithe Spirit was Dr. Ted Sol- omon, with assistants Julie Townsend and Curtis Jones. VANITIES The Delta Playhouse production of Vani- ties by Jack Heifner was an unusual and audi- ence-captivating examination of the relation- ships of three young women as they progress from high school to college and at a reunion years later where they discover that their atti- tudes and feelings for each other have changed. Regina Rickels (Joanne), Paige Posey (Kathy) and Lisa Baker (Mary) were in the excellent three women cast. Director of Vani- ties was Richard D. Strahan, with assistant Jerome Billingsley. |1 L a- ■' H v MH 1 ■fck E R til J ! :i« |j AMELIA GOES TO THE BALL The Opera Theatre Workshop, under the direction of Rebecca Zaieck, presented Menotti ' s comic opera Amelia Goes to the Ball. This reunion recognized 20 years of Delta State baseball and this occasion provided an opportunity for our former players to renew friendships and get back on the DSU diamond for a few innings of baseball. Coach Ferriss coached 17 of the 20 teams while Don Ward directed the Statesmen during the 1 967, 1 968, and 1 969 seasons. A 1 2:30 alumni game featured players who competed in the 1960 ' s against those of the 1970 ' s while the 1980 Statesmen faced Mississippi College at 2:30 in a Gulf South Conference outing. The reunion activities concluded with a banquet in the Green Onion Room of the Union. 42 — Baseball Reunion SENIOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR JAMES TIMOTHY HARVEY Tim Harvey of Laurel was presented the Charles S. After losing 12 of their first 17 games, the Ladies seemed ill prepared to enter a tournament with any hope of winning. But that was no argument for the Delta State squad, which made a clean sweep of its opponents this weekend to take sole possession of the first Gulf South Conference Invitational Women ' s Bas ketball Tournament champion- ship. With opening wins over Jacksonville State (86-57) and Troy State (81-75), the Lady Statesmen clinched the tro- phy with a 76-67 win over Mississippi College Saturday night. This is the first championship this team has won, noted Delta State coach Frances Garmon. I contribute this win to a great team effort. Mississippi College, the top-seeded team in the tourna- ment, led the Deltans through most of the first half, taking a seven-point advantage with eight minutes left before intermission. But a constant pounding of the boards by Carla Holder and Jayne Osborne lifted the Lady Statesmen to a four- point advantage, 36-32, by halftime. Holder and Osborne were the Ladies ' top scorers against MC with 26 and 1 7 points, respectively. The battle heightened in the second half, with Lisa Bridgman leading a Mississippi College comeback. Almost unstoppable from the outside, Bridgman hit the net three times in the opening minutes of the second half to help regain the lead. The two teams traded the lead until the final four min- utes of the game, when the Lady Statesmen took a sec- ond wind, then surged ahead by nine points to secure the win. The girls are getting to want to win now, Garmon said of her squad. They are finding out winning tastes a whole lot better than losing. Andrella Gray, who scored eight points against MC and was named to the All-Tournament team along with Holder, said there has definitely been a change in the Lady Statesmen. by Terry Hankins Women ' s Basketball — 71 WmQ Wn--j m ■H3s| Ivs 1a t x ■JkS4™ 8Hfl . Here are a few easy ways to do that • Make sure your home is properly insulated. • Keep your thermostat at 68 in winter and 78 in summer • Use dishwashers and clothes dryers only when you have a full load • Conserve hot water. • Turn off TVs. radios, stereos, and lights when not in use. I hope The 1981 Broom reflects all these memories by recording the fun times, the sad times, the defeats, and the victories we have had on our campus. Please understand, it ' s very hard to cover every event on campus, but at least we tried. The 1981 Broom would not be possible without the help of the Broom Staff, our photogra- phers, The Bolivar Commercial, Public Information, Sports Information, and the Miss Delta. I would like to give special thanks to Taylor Publishing Company for all their help in putting the yearbook together, to Dolores Landon for helping me design the cover and endsheet, and Jimmy Underwood for all his patience and kindness in representing our yearbook at Taylor Publishing Company. My greatest gratitude goes to Mr. Jody Correro, who has given me the encourage- ment to continue with the yearbook and to keep my sanity. As you walk away from our dear Alma Mater, hopefully you will be able to relive the happy days you ' ve spent here in The 1981 Broom.
