For this reason, we are dedicating the 1980 Broom to an exceptional, special person. She has lived a life of basketball since her high school days. After high school, she continued her love for basketball by playing for the DSC Lady Statesmen from 1 929 to 1 933. Her first coaching job was at CHS where she led CHS Kittens to three consecutive Mississippi State finals. Later, she became the head ladies ' basketball coach at DSU. The reinstated team was state champs the first year (1 974) and national champs for the next three consecutive years (1 975, 1976, 1977). Not only has she marquied a famous reputation for DSU nationwide, but also worldwide. The mere presence of this lady elates the faculty and studen + enthusiasm to no end. Delta Playhouse opened its 1979 season with Cabaret featuring guest artists Gary Collins and Mary Ann Mobley. The show was very successful with a full house every night of performance, February 20- 24. Delta Playhouse ' s fall seson began with a production of Moliere ' s comedy The Imaginary Invalid. During its October 1 0- 1 2 run, audiences were entertained with seventeenth century humor and costumes. Delta Playhouse would like to extend its gratitude to all who support its artistic efforts. Dedication of the Ewing Building - Delta State University ' s newest and most modern facility was dedicated during ceremonies on March 26, 1979. Delta State President Kent Wyatt pre- sided over the ceremonies which included addreses by Governor Cliff Finch and Lt. Governor Evelyn Gandy. Representative Kenneth 0. Williams presented the keys to the building on behalf of the State Building Commis- sion to Dr. Verner S. Holmes, president of the Board of Trustees of of State Institutions of Higher Learning. The Honorable James T. Coleman, Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals, delivered the dedicatory address. Ewing Hall, a three-story structure, houses the School of Educa- tion and is the largest structure to date on the DSU campus. The facility includes an oval shaped, tiered audito- rium with movable seating and sound and projection systems, self-contained as well as open concept classrooms, a home economics center, complete with a total dwelling for home practice internships, a television production center and a fully-equipped early child- hood and elementary education labora- tory. The building includes 91 ,000 square feet of space and was built at a cost of nearly $3.8 million. New Additions at Delta State Actually, this new building is the only remaining structure Df the original campus. Formerly, this building was the old steam plant building which supplied heat for the entire cam- pus until each building acquired its own heating system. In 1977 a recommendation was made to the State College Board to convert the building into a place for students to get away. Then a very kind and generous lady offered aver half of the funds needed for the renovation; thus today we have the Lena Roberts Sillers Chapel and Campanile. The Campanile, located on the southern side, will house the West Carillon. It is a gift to the University from the Clayton Wests and the J. C. Richardsons. Dr. Kent Wyatt, second from right, offers a handshake to N. L. Nap Cassibry, Jr., president of the Cleveland State Bank, for the message board given to the University by the bank. Joining Dr. Wyatt are from left. Dr. Brad Hovious, athletic director, Cassibry, Dr. Wyatt, and Mike Schuler, Cleveland State Bank official. The message board is designed to announce campus events, time and temperature. Located across from Young-Mauldin Cafeteria is a new structure that will soon appeal to the entire campus. It is a new gym facility in the process of construction. Covering 52,000 square feet, it consists of 18 offices, 3 indoor tennis courts, 3 basketball, Badminton, and volleyball courts, 4 handball courts and 4 racquetball courts with an observation room and a sauna bath. Also, 5,000 square feet are designated for a gymnastic area. This entire project has cost approximately $2.0 million. 33 HOMECOMING 1979 Homecoming, a week of sleepless nights, getting a date or waiting for a phone call and all the ingredients of a breakdown came again this year. With the start of the week came the hammering and pomping of the much put off homecoming float. The usual pep rally once a week became several pep rallies and a party at Stan ' s afterwards to boost spirit even more. Somewhere between pomping and yelling came the voting on the homecoming court and queen. In the Union, for two days, a list of candidates was displayed and students voted accordingly. Also during the week was the mini Olympics between the sororities and fraternities. Green and white day was observed by students. er the week of pomping floats, every night and yelling at the pep rallies until you were hoarse, finally comes THEday. Everyone can barely keep their eyes propped open after staying up all night Friday to get their displays finished. It was worth it all for the KA ' s as they won first place in the display competition. Treasure Island was the title of their display. A homecoming parade was also a part of the Delta Disneyland Day. Led by the Delta State Marching Band, the students enthusiastically supported the Statesmen before the big game. During halftime at the game, Virginia Ochoa was named Homecoming Queen 1 979. Although the results of the game ended with a loss, the homecoming parties seemed to cheer everyone up. Well, the rat race is over ... at least until next year. -% T £ tf ' j m isrr , mm3 WWU 1 ' lc OVy : . r ' - a: u 5i ■.j v ! . ' Ms Frances Garmon: The New Head Lady Coach Garmon, a native of Moody, Texas, received her B.S. degree in Physical Education and Science from Mary Hardin Baylor University in 1 961 and her M.S. degree in Physical Education from Baylor University in 1 962. Miss Garmon comes to Delta State after having developed Temple Junior College into one of tr : p JC powers in the nation. Her 1 5 year coaching record at the schooi w 1 47 against mostly university opposition. She has been selected national junioi : liege Coach of the Year twice and was named head coach of the 197S Unitec i s team which competed in the World University Games in Mexico City. ' ' i State has the nucleus of what can be a national contender again next year and i hope we can make a quick adjustment to each other. I don ' t like to lose and I love to recruit, said Coach Garmon. Heritage Bell Trophy -rom left: Suzanne LaForge, DSU Student Government President; Dr. Kent Wyatt, President 3f Delta State; Bobby Moore, President DSU Alumni Association; Harry Upton, President MC Mumni Association; Dr. Lewis Nobles, President of Mississippi College; and Tom Alexander, Resident of Student Body at MC. The long standing football series between Delta State University and Mississippi College took on an added dimension when the winner received a newly established trophy. The trophy was initiated and designed by both schools, giving it a touch of creativity. Both school mas- cots were used, along with a bell, also the symbol of victory by both institu- tions. The trophy will go to the winner fol- lowing the annual football game between the Statesmen and Choc- taws. In case of a tie, the school that is designated as the visitor for the next season will keep the trophy the first six months before transporting the trophy to the other school where it will be on display the remaining six months. This permanent trophy was desig- nated to promote spirit at both schools and preserve tradition as well as give added prestige to the game. Both alumni associations have shown strong support for this project. This year, Suzanne LaFortge, Stu- dent Government President at DSU, presented the Heritage Bell Trophy to Tom Alexander, Student Body Presi- dent at MC. The Soviet women ' s national basketball team smashed Delta State University ' s Lady Statesmen, 1 12-22, in an international exhibition game. The Russians, currently unbeaten during their American tour, had no trouble with the former national champion Lady Statesmen by jumping in front 1 9-8 early and never looking back. With 7-2 center Uliana Semenova doing most of the damage inside, the taller and quicker Russians connected on 23 of 36 floor shots in the first half on the way to a whopping 49-12 advantage at the break. They just intimidated us, said DSU coach Frances Garmon, who directed the United States to victory over the Russians during the recent World University Games in Mexico City. When you get intimidated the way we did, everything goes wrong, she added. I t hought we would have done better from outside. We knew they were capable of doing to us what they did.
