Denning came to the Mississippi Delta from Memphis State, where he had served for four years as the defensive secondary coach. Before that, he was assistant athletic director and defensive coordinator at Western Carolina University. A native of Gordon, Ga., Denning ' s first coaching job was as an assistant football and head basketball coach at Douglas County High in Douglasville, Ga. Denning was named Coach of the Year after his first season as a head coach in the Georgia public schools and, after three more years of service, he moved on to Western Carolina. After accepting the DSU position, Denning immediately assembled his coaching staff, the largest in the school ' s history, and hit the recruiting road. The energetic Denning stressed pride and promised bigger and better things in the future for Delta State football. Promoting DSU at every turn, Denning said, We have to act and feel first class. I feel a big thing for us is that we have to show more pride in Delta State. Although the Statesmen returned only 23 lettermen from a 4-6 squad, and had 47 freshmen on the roster, Denning was still optimistic and ready for the season to begin. Don Denning Head Football Coach Coaching Staff — (kneeling from left) Jim Gudger, Sonny Hill, Denning, Charles Sabbatini, Johnny Plummer. (Standing from left) Tommy Morton, Ray Poole, Ray Ishee, Lynn Holifield. . But Lady Fortune didn ' t smile on Denning and his football team. With the ranks already shallow because of inexperience, injuries struck down several key players throughout the course of the season. After winning two of their first three non-conference games, the Statesmen opened their rugged Gulf South Conference schedule with three consecutive losses. Earmarking the three game skid was a 27-0 loss to in-state rival Mississippi College. Yes, for the first time in 31 years the Choctaws had defeated DSU. There were some bright spots though. Delta thrashed UT-Martin 42-14 for its second homecoming victory in a row and 10th in its last 14. The Deltans also defeated Livingston for the third straight year and quarterback Tony Bowen set a GSC record for consecutive passes completed (13). Overall Delta State ended the season 4-7, the worst in eight years, and 2-6 in the league for seventh place. Statesmen improve to top four in GSC Delta State coach Mel Hankinson continued his rebuilding program at DSU as his second edition climbed above the .500 mark and into the upper division of the Gulf South Conference. It marked the first time in four years for the Statesmen to finish bet- ter than break even and kept Hankinson and his crew on schedule in their bid to make it back to the top in the GSC. Known for their sticky man-to-man full court pressure defense, the Deltans dropped six games by five points or less and could easily have won 18 games. But Hankinson ' s young squad returns next year intact. And the red- shirts and transfers figure to make DSU a solid contender for the GSC crown next year. It was junior Charles Cole that led the Statesmen in scoring, putting in 15.2 points per game while John Coles led the team in rebounding with a 7.2 norm. At one point during the season, Delta was ranked as high as fourth nationally in scoring, a feat that Hankinson credits to his great team defense. ■ . The Lady statesmen Taking all things into consideration, the 1978-79 Lady Statesmen enjoyed another ban- ner basketball season. During what would have to be called a rebuilding year, DSU over- came an abnormal amount of injuries and the nation ' s toughest schedule to win 20 games for the fifth consecutive season. Having to replace three graduated Ail-Americans was certainly a monumental task. And that, along with injuries to five players at one time or another — two of whom were start- ers — proved to be the Ladies biggest challenge. And as far as the schedule is concerned, there were none tougher in the country as 13 of DSU ' s games were against nationally- ranked teams. The lady roundballers suffered through several low points during the season, losing nine games during the regular schedule. Those nine losses equalled the combined setbacks of the four previous seasons while the Ladies recorded a 120-9 mark over that time span. The Lady Statesmen also dropped two in a row during the year, marking the first time in history for that to happen. But on the other hand, several high points came too. An amazing junior college trans- fer, Jessie Brown, paced Margaret Wade ' s club in scoring and rebounding with 23.5 points and 15.3 rebounds per game. Brown broke two Delta State records that were formerly held by former Delta great Lusia Harris. Grabbing 25 rebounds in a single game and aver- aging 15.3 rebounds per game over the course of the season, Brown eclipsed Harris ' old marks of 24 and 15.1 respectively. Melissa Ward also put her name in the record book by handing out 20 assists against Mississippi State, breaking the old mark held by Ramona von Boeckman at 18. Baseball Baseball team shoots for No. 1 in 1979 For Boo Ferriss and Delta State baseball, there is one goal that stands head and shoulders above all others in 1979. That, of course, is the NCAA Division II World Series crown. After finishing as the runner-up last year, and No. 3 the year before, the Statesmen are looking for their third consecutive trip to Springfield. Ferriss, now in his 17th season at the helm of the DSU baseball fortunes, has guided Delta State to 84 victories over the past two years. In ' 78, the Statesmen were Gulf South Conference Western Division champs and shared the GSC crown with Southeastern Louisiana. Fifteen lettermen return from last year ' s 43-19 squad which shared the Gulf South Conference championship, captured the NCAA Division II South Central title, and placed second in the College World Series. Heading the list of returnees is All- America centerfielder Bubba McBrain of Jackson, a three-year letterman. Two-year monogram winners set for 1979 action are pitcher Harry Lott of Holcomb and left fielder Tim Harvey of Laurel. Other returnees who notched their first letter a year ago include outfielders Timbo Baird of West P oint, Bill Hood of Greenville, and Ben Evans of Holly Springs; infielders Ricky Hearn of Olive Branch, Bubba Cates of Cleveland, Dale Davis of Laurel, and Ricky Hicks of Caledonia; catchers Rusty Sharp of Clarksdale and Robert Downing of Memphis, Tenn.; and pitchers Steve Moore of Jackson, Ty Carter of Memphis, Tenn., and Kevin Medlock of Valley Park, Mo. Ferriss, who is beginning his 17th season at Delta State, will be assisted by former Statesmen Joey Porter and Stan Partridge, plus ex-Pittsburgh Pirate farmhand Luke Wrenn. ANDREW BADGER If there is ever a teacher most people remember, it is usually an English teacher. In considering the many deserving associates of Delta State University, it has been decided that these three English teachers should take honors this year. Rarely, does a DSU student graduate without becoming acquainted with one of these three educators. If you have, you have certainly missed out on inspiration as well as motivation. We dedicate the 1979 Broom to Dr. Daniel McQuagge, Dr. Frank Novak, and Dr. Andrew Badger. English — a universal language? These teachers have related why. Much success to you and thanks for the inspirations. — If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. H.D.T. l V m mL H THl Wmm : 1 m Delta Playhouse The 1978-79 members of the Delta Playhouse presented their fall production of The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch on October 11, 12, and 13. This first play of the season was a farcical tragedy which incorporated the idea that people are often the product of other ' s opinions. This idea was cleverly displayed in a light-hearted sketch taking place in the Old West. Attendance was high all three nights of the play, and the D.S.U. student body is looking forward to coming productions. Future productions by the Delta Playhouse will be: Wait Until Dark November 15-7, 1978 Cabaret February, 1979 and the final play will be produced April 25-27, 1979. DELTA PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS THE DEATH AND [Iff OF EDITOR ' S NOTE Well, it has been a long year but a good one. Each of us has learned new things and improved from experiences. Here are a few easy ways to do that: • Make sure your home is properly insulated. • Keep your thermostat at 68 : in winter and 78 : in summer. • Use dishwashers and clothes dryers only when you have a full load. • Conserve hot water. • Turn off TVs, radios, stereos, and lights when not in use. A few simple rules, but following them makes good sense. Dollars and cents, too. . . because these rules help you save money as well as electricity.
