In the same year that Delta State University was celebrating its 50th Anniversary, one of its own was cho- sen to serve as the institution ' s fifth president. Dr. Forest Kent Wyatt, the first alumnus so honored was named to this high position on July 1, 1975. He is qualified uniquely by nurture, education, and experience to serve his alma mater as president. Dr. Wyatt was born in Berea, Kentucky on May 27, 1932. He came with his parents to Cleveland at the age of twelve when his father joined the physical education faculty at Delta State University. Growing up on the campus, he has seen the institution progress from a small teachers college to a multi-disciplined univer- sity. His outlook reflects his background of academe. Dr. Wyatt is married to his college sweetheart, the former Janice Collins of Rolling Fork. Janice, too, is a first — the first Miss Delta State College after the name change from Delta State Teachers College. Dr. and Mrs. Wyatt have two talented and lovely daughters, Tara and Elizabeth. The fifth president is gifted in sports. In high school he was named to the All-State Basketball team. At Delta State he lettered in football, basketball, and tennis. He is also a low handicap golfer. Upon graduation from Cleveland High School, Dr. Wyatt entered the Delta State Teachers College and in 1956 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in mathematics from the institution he now heads. He continued his interest in mathematics for his Master of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi four years later. In 1970 he was awarded the Doctor of Education with emphasis in administration and supervision by the University of Mississippi. The summer of 1975 he spent at Harvard University ' s Institute on Educational Management. His career began in 1956 as a teacher of high school mathematics and coach at Mobile, Alabama. In 1960 he became teacher of mathematics and coach at the Cleveland High School. His administrative competence brought an appoi ntment in 1963 as principal of the nearby Merigold School. Ever a loyal supporter of Delta State University, Dr. Wyatt ' s affiliation with the University reached beyond the alumnus stage on July 1, 1964, when he became the institution ' s first full-time Alumni Secretary. In 1969 he was appointed Adminis- trative Assistant to the late President James M. Ewing and continued in this position with President Aubrey Keith Lucas. Simultaneously with his service as Assistant to the President, Dr. Wyatt held the positions of Director of Administrative Services, and Associate Professor of Education. His apprenticeship under two presidents gave him unique opportunities for insight into the responsibilities of a university president. The title of president is not new to Dr. Wyatt. He was president of his class three of his four undergradu- ate years. Civic presidencies have included that of the 100-member Cleveland Lions Club, of the 400-mem- ber Metropolitan Dinner Club of the Greater Delta Area, and the Cleveland Parent-Teacher Association. He served a term as president of the Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. He has held positions of leadership with numerous civic and service organizations. Dr. Wyatt is a member of the Delta State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa and the Order of Kappa Alpha. He is a dedicated and active member of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland. He was named Outstanding Alumnus of Delta State University for 1975. As a student at Delta State University, Forest Kent Wyatt daily passed under the inscription over the north doorway of the hall then known as the Broom Memorial Administration Building. Enter by this gateway, and seek the way of honor, the light of truth, and the will to work for man. As the institution enters its second half century of service, alumnus and fifth President Forest Kent Wyatt, who embodies this spirit of honor, truth, and service, has brought new and growing dimensions to the herit- age that is a living Delta State University.
