Dr. Forest Kent Wyatt, the first alumnus so honored was named to this high position on July 1, 1975. He is qualified uniquely by nurture, education, and experience to serve his alma mater as president. Dr. Wyatt was born in Berea, Kentucky on May 27, 1932. He came with his parents to Cleveland at the age of twelve when his father joined the physical education faculty at Delta State University. Growing up on the campus, he has seen the institution progress from a small teachers college to a multi-disciplined univer- sity. His outlook reflects his background of academe. Dr. Wyatt is married to his college sweetheart, the former Janice Collins of Rolling Fork. Janice, too, is a first — the first Miss Delta State College after the name change from Delta State Teachers College. Dr. and Mrs. Wyatt have two talented and lovely daughters, Tara and Elizabeth. The fifth president is gifted in sports. In high school he was named to the All-State Basketball team. At Delta State he lettered in football, basketball, and tennis. He is also a low handicap golfer. Upon graduation from Cleveland High School, Dr. Wyatt entered the Delta State Teachers College and in 1956 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in mathematics from the institution he now heads. He continued his interest in mathematics for his Master of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi four years later. In 1970 he was awarded the Doctor of Education with emphasis in administration and supervision by the University of Mississippi. The summer of 1975 he spent at Harvard University ' s Institute on Educational Management. His career began in 1956 as a teacher of high school mathematics and coach at Mobile, Alabama. In 1960 he became teacher of mathematics and coach at the Cleveland High School. His administrative competence brought an appoi ntment in 1963 as principal of the nearby Merigold School. Ever a loyal supporter of Delta State University, Dr. Wyatt ' s affiliation with the University reached beyond the alumnus stage on July 1, 1964, when he became the institution ' s first full-time Alumni Secretary. In 1969 he was appointed Adminis- trative Assistant to the late President James M. Ewing and continued in this position with President Aubrey Keith Lucas. Simultaneously with his service as Assistant to the President, Dr. Wyatt held the positions of Director of Administrative Services, and Associate Professor of Education. His apprenticeship under two presidents gave him unique opportunities for insight into the responsibilities of a university president. The title of president is not new to Dr. Wyatt. He was president of his class three of his four undergradu- ate years. Civic presidencies have included that of the 100-member Cleveland Lions Club, of the 400-mem- ber Metropolitan Dinner Club of the Greater Delta Area, and the Cleveland Parent-Teacher Association. He served a term as president of the Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. He has held positions of leadership with numerous civic and service organizations. Dr. Wyatt is a member of the Delta State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa and the Order of Kappa Alpha. He is a dedicated and active member of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland. He was named Outstanding Alumnus of Delta State University for 1975. As a student at Delta State University, Forest Kent Wyatt daily passed under the inscription over the north doorway of the hall then known as the Broom Memorial Administration Building. Enter by this gateway, and seek the way of honor, the light of truth, and the will to work for man. As the institution enters its second half century of service, alumnus and fifth President Forest Kent Wyatt, who embodies this spirit of honor, truth, and service, has brought new and growing dimensions to the herit- age that is a living Delta State University. DELTA ST. FALLS TO SEMO Southeast Missouri upset Delta State University 24-21. Delta State had a shot to tie the game but Sig Bressler missed a 50-yard field goal attempt as the horn sounded. NORTH ALABAMA TRIPS DELTA STATE Tight end Myles Smith took a screen pass from quarterback Gerald Goodman 71 yards to break a 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter and lead North Ala- bama to a hard-fought 28-21 Gulf South Confer- ence win over Delta State. DELTA STATE BEATS MC Quarterback Charles Minyard threw three touch- down passes as DSU, despite nine fumbles on a rain-soaked field, defeated Mississippi College 24- 13 in Gulf South Conference football. The Statesmen put the game away for good in the third quarter when Minyard hit Jackson for a 26- yard scoring pass and later connected with Randy Phillips for a 9-yard touchdown. TROY STATE NIPS DSU Ray Yancey booted a 22-yard field goal with 47 seconds left in the game to give Troy State a 10-7 victory over DSU in Gulf South Conference foot- ball. Yancey ' s winning kick came a minute after the Trojans recovered DSU ' s fifth fumble of the game. The Statesmen lost three of those fumbles, while Troy State lost five of five fumbles. Delta State ' s Sig Bressler tried a 52-yard field goal with seven seconds left but it fell short. Tennessee-Martin quarterback Alvin Smalls hit split end Ronald George with scoring passes of 43 and 25 yards as the Pacers mauled DSU 46-7. Delta State ' s only score came in the fourth quar- ter when quarterback Charles Minyard went in from the two. UT-M sewed it up with a 12 yard run by Tim Martin. DELTA STATE LOSES TO JSU Rocky Riddle kicked a 33-yard field goal in the final minutes of the game following a pass intercep- tion by teammate Tommy Macon to lift Jackson- ville State to a come-from-behind 16-13 Gulf South Conference victory over Delta State. Five years ago when Delta State University renewed wom- en ' s basketball after a 40 year layoff, it was Margaret Wade who was selected to coach the Lady Statesmen. Her decision to come out of a 14 year coaching retirement was met with rapid lire approval since Clevelanders knew she would once again have the opportuni ty to reach a goal she had missed while coaching at Cleveland High School — a state championship. Margaret Wade had spent 17 years coaching the women ' s bas- ketball team at the local high school before taking a position in the Physical Education Department at Delta State in 1959. Three straight years her Wild- kittens had advanced to the Mis- sissippi state finals, only to lose those three championship games by a total of four points. It was an experience a lot of Cleveland people haven ' t gotten over, she recalls. At last, after 14 years away from the action, Margaret Wade was eager for another shot and the new Delta State assignment was a challenge, both physically and mentally. She had won a bout with can- cer and survived a near fatal auto accident during the years away from the court. Coaching styles and player attitudes had changed. It took a little while to adjust, but Delta State and the entire community rallied around the team, she noted. No one doubted her ability to run the club, no matter how many changes had resulted while she was out of coaching. Already a living legend in Mis- sissippi basketball circles, she had recorded a 335-67 record at Cleveland High. Her first four years back in coaching have been called one of the most amazing accomplish- ments in sports history. Under She is also a member of the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame. Following the first A.I.A.W. national championship in 1975. Coach Wade was presented a green and white Cadillac. She ' s in a 1977 model this year, also Lady Statesmen zoomed into the national spotlight, winning four state championships, three regional titles, and three national championships. The four year record stands at 109-6, not coun- ting a victory over the People ' s Republic of China two years ago. Her overall coaching record is 444 victories and only 73 losses, and her .859 winning per- centage ranks ahead of the immortal Clair Bee and the leg- endary Adolph Rupp. One of the most respected ladies in the Magnolia state. Coach Wade was the first woman ever inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. MAR- GARET WADE, HEAD COACH and this one is equipped with a CB radio. Her handle is Sun- shine Lady. a takeoff from her theme song. You are My Sun- shine. Coach Wade is a graduate of Delta State and played on its collegiate women ' s teams from 1929lo 1932. It was at the end of the 1932 season that the admin- istration decided to drop wom- en ' s basketball, because it was too rough for young ladies. We burned our uniforms. Margaret recalls. It was hard to accept since basketball had been a major part of my life during my youth. Coach Wade earned her Mas- ter ' s degree from the University of Alabama and has further advanced study at Duke Univer- sity and Columbia University of New York. She has received many profes- sional honors, including past chairman of the Mississippi Association of Health. Physical Education, and Recreation. She received the MAHPER State Honor Award in 1965, and has served as Bolivar County Easter Seal Campaign Chairman several years. Coach Wade ' s latest honor came during the summer when she was named Coach of the Year in Mississippi, an award which was sponsored by Kel- logg ' s. A member of various profes- sional organizations. Coach Wade is included in several national publications recogniz- ing outstanding leaders in the field of education. Lusia Harris Stewart, the straw that stirred the drink with no Thurman Munson to take exception . . . the axle upon which the Delta State wheel rolled . . . more than a superstar — a supernova. Her statistics are awesome . . . 2,981 career points, a high of 58 in a single game, a four-year average of 25.9 for 1 15 games, 1,662 rebounds over that route, even the 386 personal fouls are more than queen sized. But the impressive thing to be remembered through the ages to come will be the three national basketball cham- pionships for her team, the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University. Without Lucy, the likelihood of even one would be remote. And how those championships came. The first in 1975 with three freshmen starting alongside the sophomore twosome of Wanda Hairston and Lucy Harris, an unbeaten stampede through 28 straight opponents, capped by knocking off the old champs from Immaculata (Pa.) College in the national finals. Then in 1976, when there would be no sneaking up on anyone — for by then all the world of women ' s basketball knew of the Lady Statesmen, another championship, again at Immaculata ' s expense in the windup. And finally 1977, the third in a row and the sweetest for it would be the last with Wanda and Lusia. Ed Nixon, whose Lady Choctaws at Mississippi College finished second nationally in 1974 to Immaculata, suf- fered more than anyone at the hands of Lucy and Co. Only once were the Lady Chocs to come out victorious in the four years of the Harris-Hairston et al reign ... the first meeting the first year by 66-65. Thereafter it was never- more — 14 straight losses to the Lady Statesmen and MC unquestionably was the second best in Mississippi. That only illustrated how great was the difference between No. 1 and No. 2, no matter how hard No. 2 might try. And by the time DSU had done in the Lady Chocs for the eighth time or so in succession, Ed was ready to concede that maybe we ' ll beat them sometime . . . after Lucy graduates. So dominant was this 6-3, 185 pound woman that opponents really never had a chance. Oh, sure the Lady States- men lost occasionally — twice the first year, once the third, even three times the fourth — but never by much and never, never when the game really was important. Not once the juggernaut started in 1974-75 with the addition of those three freshmen . . . Debbie Brock, Cornelia Ward, and Romona Von Boeckman. Individually stars, together invincible. And their coach, Margaret Wade, understood full well that so long as they remained together, carefully orchestrated to take the fullest advantage of that ebony tower of power in the pivot, the other team, sooner or later, must fall. That ' s how a record of 109 wins against just six losses comes. Never too greedy, seldom seeking to run up the score . . . only nine times in the four seasons reaching the 100 point level and most often then because the Ladies would be forced into a fast-breaking foe unwilling to leave well enough alone. Nixon the astute put his finger squarely upon the problem posed by DSU — There never is any assurance that they (the Lady Statesmen) won ' t score on you every trip down the floor. Who would forget last spring ' s AIAW Region 3 final when the Lady Statesmen shot a national record 91.2 per cent (31 — 34) from the floor in the first half against Nixon ' s Lady Chocs? With Lucy inside to dominate, that possibility certainly did exist. And powerful a rebounder as she might be, there was help from Hairston and Von Boeckman to throttle the opposition for there was defense, too, nearly 100 percentage points more defense last season. Delta State hit 49.8 per cent of its shots (Lucy was 62.7), the opponents 39.9. With the victories and the championships, the honors came, most particularly to Lucy . . . first a spot on the United States team in the World Games in Mexico City two years ago, then a place on the U.S. Olympic team at Montreal that won the silver medal — with Big Lucy scoring the first two points ever in a woman ' s Olympic basket- ball game. At home? Lots of honors, too, the most notable this past spring when she was named Mississippi ' s Athlete of the year. That ' s a prestige title taken in the past by the likes of a fellow Deltan, Archie Manning of Drew, Ole Miss and the New Orleans Saints. T n Receiving Awards ATLANTA, Ga. — Delta State University continued to record firsts for its athletic program when for- mer first baseman Bryan Rodgers of Jackson, Miss., was presented a Today ' s Top Five award for 1977 by the National Collegiate Athletic Association during its annual convention here at the Peachtree Plaza Hotel. It marked the second straight day for a former Delta State athlete to be honored on a national level. Three-time All-America center Lusia Harris Stewart was named the outstanding woman athlete of the year by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and received the first ever Broderick Cup dur- ing ceremonies at the Colony Square Hotel. The Today ' s Top Five award is the highest honor the NCAA presents a student-athlete and it is believed Rodgers is the first Mississippi collegian to be so honored. I can ' t tell you how much I appreciate this honor, Bryan said after the ceremonies. I ' m so happy I came to Delta State. It ' s still hard to believe the committee selected me over so many outstanding athletes. I shall never forget what ' s happened today. Nielsen responded for the athletes by saying he was pleased the NCAA gave us a balance in our student life. The award winners were presented individually to the more than 1,000 delegates and officials attending the NCAA convention. While national TV sports announcer Lindsey Nelson was reading the individual accomplishments, those attending were shown a short film clip on the honorees. The crowd was especially moved when Nelson informed that Rodgers had compiled a perfect 4.00 grade point average while attending Delta State University. (Bryan was the only winner with such a high academic standing.) During his career at Delta State, Bryan helped lead Coach Dave Boo Ferriss ' Statesmen to a third place finish at the NCAA Division 2 World Series last spring. A two-time Academic All-America selection, Rodgers also made the third team All-America squad as selected by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. The Gulf South Conference player of the year for 1976-77, Bryan compiled a .307 career batting average and hit .345 last year. His accomplishments and contributions off the playing field were also impressive. President of ODK, he received the Dean of the University Award, the first diploma during graduation ceremonies, and was selected permanent class president. The NCAA also honored its Silver Aniversary Top Five at the luncheon. Get Mean Big Green I fcJ fey ft ' %% rt J EFT Dave Boo Ferriss, head baseball coach at Delta State University, was selected the 1977 Coach of the Year in the NCAA Division II South Central Region. Ferriss, who directed the Statesmen to a 41- 17 record, the South Central championship, and a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series last spring, was chosen for the award by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. A native of Shaw, Miss., Boo is beginning his 16th spring at the helm of the Delta State baseball pro- gram. His 15-year record here stands at 265-186-4. Last year ' s team produced the finest record in Delta State history, and established many school and Gulf South Conference records. Four members of the squad made the All- America team. Ferriss, a graduate of Mississippi State, is a former Boston Red Sox pitcher and pitching coach. He was Rookie of the Year in the American League in 1945 when he posted a 21-10 record. In 1946 he was the American League ' s No. 1 pitcher with a 25-6 record and earned a 4-0 shutout over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1946 World Series. His major league record was 65-30. Margaret Wade, head coach of the three time AIAW national champion Delta State Lady Statesmen, was selected 1977 Coach of the Year in Mississippi. The honor, which was presented by ABC sports- caster and former Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson at the Kellogg ' s Women ' s Coach of the Year Clinic in Atlanta, was one of five going to Mississippi basketball coaches. Miss Wade, who has led the Lady Statesmen to an outstanding record since Delta State began its cur- rent women ' s program four years ago, also served on the clinic lecture staff. The award was one of two honors bestowed on Miss Wade during the past few months. She was recently honored when the Cleve- land school board named the new gymnasium at Margaret Green Junior High the Margaret Wade Gym- nasium. WE ARE THE CHA V HI - H™.%. 1 i ? v ;. Here are a few easy ways to do that: • Make sure your home is properly insulated. • Keep your thermostat at 68° in winter and 78° in summer. • Use dishwashers and clothes dryers only when you have a full load. • Conserve hot water. • Turn off TVs, radios, stereos, and lights when not in use. A few simple rules, but following them makes good sense. Dollars and cents, too. . . because these rules help you save money as well as electricity. And I Grow Away Four years of security: Four years of learning and experiencing. Four years of time out of a young life. And what have I learned? I thought that I had earned freedom. No one can stop me now. I had said. 1 took four years to get addi- tional information, and boy. am I glad. I feel now that freedom is something that will never be given to me. but it is something that I must continually earn. I learned that freedom doesn ' t just happen — you must pay for it with respon- sible actions. With what I have learned I realize that true wisdom is something that 1 will never attain, but I must move toward it as a goal. I am ready to move on. Delta State has prepared me for my future. What direction will I take? This time I know. ■ ml On My Own at Last! Not so very long ago I walked across a stage before hundreds of misty-eyed parents and received what I knew was a sure ticket to freedom. I accepted that diploma as if it were the passport to the four corners of the world. I have conquered the world and it is mine. Index Acree.
