In 1927, despite the depression, several new buildings were completed. These included a girls ' dormitory, two residences, a small frame gymnasium, and a laundry. In May, 1928, the first graduating class of DSTC consisted of thirteen members who received a B.S. in Education. Miss Mollie Bedweli, valedictorian, received the first diploma. The next important step was the acceptance of DSTC by the Associate Rating in Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools on December 7, 1928. The college was granted full membership in Southern Association of Universities and Colleges on December 4, 1930, when all other state institutions of Mississippi were drop- ped. Dr. W. H. Zeigel 1925-1947 Dean of the College On February 16, 1955, the word Teachers was dropped to leave Delta State College. The following fall, Septem- ber 1, 1956, Dr. James M. Ewing was inaugurated as Delta State ' s third presi- dent. During Dr. Ewing ' s fifteen-year term, DSC experienced much growth in enrollment, the physical plant, and pres- tige. From 1 956 to 1 971 , plant improve- ment totaled $1 5,000,000, and enroll- ment increased from 527 to 3,039. Dr. Jo© Farrar 1947-1957 Dmn. of the College

Graduate work for teachers was offered for the first time in 1 965. A Master of Education degree was approved and awarded in May, 1966. In November, 1969, the gradu- ate program was expanded with a Master of Arts degree, the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Library Science, and the Mas- ter of Science.
