Delta State Teachers College was founded in 1924 by act of the legisla- ture of the state of Mississippi to qual- ify teachers for the public schools. The bili was ably sponsored in the senate by Senator W. B. Roberts of Rosedale and steered into passage in the house by Honorable Walters Sillers of Rosedale. Location of the college was to be at either Cleveland, Bolivar County, or Moorehead, Sunflower County, or any other city or town wholly in the delta. A committee voted by three to two that the location be Cleveland. Or. J. W. Broom 1 925-1 926 President Aware of the value of a state sup- ported institution of higher learning, the citizens of Cleveland succeeded in surpassing offers made by other com- munities. Their offer included 1 20 acres of land, three two-story agricul- tural high school buildings, $54,500 in cash, a pledge to furnish electric lights and artesian water as long as DSTC remained in Cleveland, and numerous other benefits. The first president of DSTC was Dr. J. W. Broom, Assistant State Superin- tendent of Education in Jackson. Under his administration, the college opened its doors to students in a sum- mer school on June 8, 1925, and in regular session on September 15, 1 925, with an enrollment of 1 25 and 1 1 faculty members.
