Under Dr. Ewing, Delta State has been called Mississippi ' s most rap- idly growing Liberal Arts Institution, and as the center of higher edu- cation in the delta. Since assuming his role as Third President of the college Delta State ' s enrollment has increased from 527 in 1956 to 3,039 students in 1971 with a total of 5,11,1 degrees being awarded, of these, 316 being M.S. degrees. More than 15 million dollars has been spent on campus improvements and a 2 million dollar Student Union Building is now in the process of becoming a reality at his designation. To enumer- ate all the achievements of Dr. Ewing would entail a long list indeed. Instead, let it suffice to say that Delta State today is living proof of the dedication shown by the man foremost with the Statesman ' s well-being in mind, and that man is James M. Ewing. Lucas took office as the fourth President of Delta State College, the faculty and administration realized that a new era in DSC ' s histo- ry had been ushered in. Lucas quickly became known as an academic leader as well as an administrative leader, a man who follows intellectual pursuits, and challenges the faculty to do likewise. Just what kind of man is Dr. Lucas? An educator. A 37-year-old father of four. An intellectual. An administrator whose warm, sympathetic attitude makes him popular with the students. Perhaps the best way to understand Dr. Aubrey K. Lucas is to review a sampling of his ideas: On education: I should like for all of us to reaffirm our belief in learning and the search for truth as the primary reasons for our existence. Lucas does not believe, however, in a random approach to education. If we are to do more than pay lip service to effective teaching, we must design some strategies for achieving it. One of Dr. Lucas ' strategies for achieving more effective education is the wider- campus concept. This involves the basic goal of reaching out into the community and serving others besides those who just register for courses ... In this communi- ty where learning is primary, we shall judge our actions and plans by the question: ' Does it promote or enhance learning? ' How does a man like Lucas see the office of college president? I see the Presi- dent of the college as the ' man of the moment ' — one who meets the needs of ad- ministration as they come up ... It is not the role of the President to make every decision in an institution of higher learning. Indeed, Dr. Lucas believes in involv- ing all members of the college community in the development of a better DSC. I want to see an undergraduate institution that is so strong in terms of outstanding faculty, facilities, and resources that the people of Mississippi will be scrambling to get their sons and daughters in this institution . . . Then I want to see this college become a beehive of activity in the evenings, and weekends involving our people in what I call ' continuing education ' . . . With leisure time expanding, I want to see the people turn toward us for development of their vocational interests — music, art, or whatever ... WE CAN DO IT HERE! _ to you, buddy! They pass By-laws pertaining to campus activities, lass structure and organization. Security Homer Benton, the Director of Security is the first col- lege security officer from Mississippi to graduate from the Federal Bureau of Inves- tigation Academy in Wash- ington, D.C. iVVorking with him are nine full-time security officers, five of whom have either peen trained at the Miss. Highway Patrol Academy or have had prior law enforce- ment experience. The Delta State Chapter of the American Home; Economics Association is open to all minors and majors in Home Econom- ics. The objective of the club is to encourage pro- fessional growth of home economics students. Home Economics Club Pi Omega Pi Pi Omega Pi is a national honorary society for jun- ior and senior business education majors who meet the national stan- dards of superior scholar- ship. Omicron Delta Kappa 1972 Initiates Omicron Delta Kappa, a national men ' s honorary society, recognizes men who at- tain a high standard of efficiency in collegiate activities. It brings together such men on a basis of mutual interest and understanding in order that they may contribute to the progress of the college. Interfraternity Council The Inter-Fraternity Council, the governing body for Delta State fraternities, is com- posed of representatives from each fraternity. The council meets at stated intervals to discuss mutual problems and projects pertaining to fraternal life on the campus and to consider the relationships between these groups and the College. The officers of the Inter-Fraternity Council are: Billy Nowell (Kappa Alpha) Presi- dent, Steve Grimes (Phi Kappa Tau) Vice-President, and Nape Cassibry (Pi Kappa Alpha) Secretary-Treasurer. The Governing body for Delta State sororitites, the Panhellenic Council is composed of representatives, both undergraduates and alumnae, from each of the three sororities on campus. At meetings which are held at stated intervals they discuss problems and projects, general conditions and other subjects pertaining to sorority life on the cam- pus of Delta State College. ' STUDENT EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION DELTA STATE COLLEGE The Student Educators Association of Delta State College is an organization made up of both elementary and secondary education majors. It meets the sec- ond Wednesday of each month at 7:30 P. M. These are the purposes of the organization: (1) To develop among college students preparing to be teachers an under- standing of the teaching profession through participation in professional ac- tivities, the study of ethics, organizations, policies, and programs of local, state, and national education associations. (2) To interest capable young men and women in education as a life-long career and to encourage selective standards for persons admitted to ap- proved programs of teacher education. (3) To give students preparing to teach practical experience in working to- gether on problems of the profession and of society. (4) To encourage the continual re-examination and raising of educational standards through the active implementation of the above purposes. Since Gamma Psi Chapter ' s founding in 1962, KD has proved outstanding not only in campus af- fairs, but in service projects. Each year KD ' s par- ticipate in the Easter Seal Drive, Thanksgiving food collections and a Santa party for the under- privileged. A Faculty-Alumnae Tea, an annual KD — Tri- Delt birthday party, Open house, a Mother- Daughter Tea, a formal and an informal party, and several swaps constitute most of our social events. Membership in Phi Mu brings not only a long and gracious heritage to up- hold but also a sisterhood that is eternal. Kappa Ep- silon chapter at Delta State participates in a wide va- riety of activities such as the SGA, various honorary fraternities, Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and beauty pageants. Lee, whose gracious knightly life served as the spiritual founder for many of the ideals and customs of the Order. Delta Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order has always strived for scholastic excellence, leadership, character, and contribution to the college community. Kappa Alpha ' s are on the President ' s and Dean ' s list, Who ' s Who In American Universities and Colleges, M. Club, Omicron Delta Kappa, and other honoraries. Billy Nowell was SGA vice-president and Mr. D. S. C. Jake Bellipani was SGA treasurer. Swaps with the KD ' s, Tri-Delta ' s, and Phi Mu ' s were all successful. Projects for Thanksgiving and Christmas kept both actives and pledges busy. Black and White Ball, Old South Weekend, plus many other social func- tions went over great. Everett The Zeta Beta chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded at Delta State on December 15, 1963, and since that time has progressed into one of the most out- standing on campus. Essentially, a Southern fraternity, being founded at the University of Virginia by six con- federate soldiers. Pi Kappa Alpha is now one of the three largest fraternities in the country. Zeta Beta achievement is evidenced by its represen- tation in all phases of campus activity. Several Pikes hold membership in such organizations as the Senate and Delta Singers. Billy LaForge was named to the Fac- ulty Scholars and was elected the President of the S. G. A. while Eddie Hall was elected Senior Class president. Pikes also have members in the ODK. Track high jumper Walton Curry winning the NAIA high jump championship. Seven School rec- ords broken, and one tied. Delta State won the Mississippi Intercollegiate meet in Jackson, the Mississippi College In- vitational, the Delta Relays, a triangular meet on the home track and the Mississippi Valley State College Invitational. The Statesmen dropped a dual meet to Southeastern Louisiana, came in second at a trian- gular meet at Arkansas A M and pulled a second place from a field of six teams competing in the Selma Invitational. Curry, going over the bar backwards, used the Fosbury flop method to clear seven feet and move closer to a place as a high jumper on the Olympic track team. Randall Huffman, clearing 15 ' 2% , set a new school pole vault record. Jamie Cox took the school 220-yard dash with a 9.5 time. Tommy Worthy, running a 47.8 blast, sacked the 440-yard dash record. Wayne Parker ran a 14.6 120-yard high hurdles to tie the school record set in 1969 by George Pell. George Morris, breaking the ribbon at 53.2, set a new school record for the 440-yard intermediate hurdles. The 440-yard relay team, manned by Jamie Cox, Skip Burlison, Paul Van Cleave and Mike Ray, rounded the track for a school record of 42.2. The mile relay team, Mike Ray, Jim Bourke, George Morris and Tommy Worthy, rewrote the school record with a 3:16.9 time. School Spirit Helped Us . . . (KA pop gun! The Statesmen, playing twice as many games as they had played the year before, probably reached the high point of the year when they tied Ole Miss for third place at the Mississippi Invitational Tour- nament. Thomas finished the season with an 11-2 record on his singles matches. The Foster-Montgomery team finished regular season play with a clean 14-0 campaign and lost only one match in tournament ac- tion.
