After getting off to a fast start by defeating Southeast Missouri, 31-21, and Florence State, 24-16, the Statesmen dropped five in a row, losing to Stephen F. Austin, 14-7; Troy State, 35-23; Southwestern Louis- iana, 32-27; University of Tennessee at Martin, 29-20; and Livingston University, 24-13. Following the Livingston loss, the Deltans bounced back to defeat Jacksonville State University, 27-7; Northeast Louisiana, 10-3; and Centenary College, 63-0. McCool noted that he felt the victory over North- east had to be the highlight of the season. This game proved to us that we were a much better team than 5-5. As a team, the Deltans limited the opposition to 902 yards rushing in 10 games, the lowest for a Delta State team in a number of years. 67 Kicking specialist, Ernie Wells, regained his scoring lead with 42 points, hitting 27 of 30 extra point attempts and five of eight field goal attempts. Quarterback Alan Jones ranked second in scoring with 38 points, led in punting with a 38.3 average, was first in passing with III completions in 199 at- tempts for 1,093 yards and 10 touchdowns, and led in total offense with 1,522 in 3 1 5 plays. Tailback Billy Bell was the leading rusher with 731 yards in 169 carries for a 4.6 average. He also led the team in pass receiving with 27 receptions while flanker Grady Coleman was next with 26. Fullback Alton Ellis -was third with 25 and split end Sparky Walker fourth with 22. Don Jacobs tallied the most pass interceptions with six for 51 yards and an 8.5 average. Defensive back Wyatt Dendy was the top kickoff re- turner with 20 for 375 yards. But their other goal, that to win a national championship, wasn ' t reached as the Statesmen had to settle for No. 2 when they lost to Chapman College of Orange, California, in the finals of the NCAA Col- lege Division World Series in Springfield, Missouri. Coach Don Ward has now car- ried the Deltans to two straight NCAA playoffs. Last year Delta State finished third in the Mid- east Regional in Normal, Illinois. The Statesmen almost racked up No. 20 in that tournament, but had to settle for a 19-12 record. Delta State placed three mem- bers on the World Series All-Tour- ney team — centerfielder Jim Whitehurst, catcher Les Slough, and shortstop John Smillie — and they will be back. ft GOLF 1968 I ■Coach Buddy Crovetta Left to right: Mike Flanagan, Richard Webster, and Curtis Barton. One was the Mississippi Intercollegiate Tournament and the other was the Southern Invitational Tournament. All but one member of the tennis team is returning this year and Coach Collins is looking for an out- standing season on the courts. Coach Laurin Collins Left to right: Mike Blackmon, Buddy Hemphill, David Thomas, Chris Lundy, Mac Venable, and George Biddle 101 TRACK 1968 Delta State College ' s track season went down as one of the most successful for the Delta thinclads. The Statesmen racked up dual meet victories against Livingston State and Millsaps while fin- ishing first in two triangular meets. Only Mississippi College was able to gain more points than the Deltans, in the field of Tive, in the Mississippi College Invitational. A total of 16 Delta State records were broken during the abbreviated year which saw bad wea- ther keep more meets from being run. One record was also tied with two failing to be broken — the discus and shot put. The mile relay team — composed of Paul Van- Cleave, Jim Deavers, Gene Kirk, and Jim Wall — went undefeated as they set a new mark in that event with a time of 3:21.6 at Arkansas A M. The unit beat several teams who had turned in better times and could very well have recorded a lower mark had better conditions existed. Coach Wig Reily f THE 1968 TRACK TEAM 102 I. : it ; CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Team finished the 1968 season with a fine record. In dual meets, the Statesmen won six meets and lost only one. Competing in the Triangular Meets, Delta State College got one first place, one second place, and one third place. The Cross Country team finished third in state intercollegiate competition.  r mm ■■I ■■From left to right: Jim Addis, Bubba Kynerd, Emory Kennedy, Randy Brumfieid, Ronnie Atkins, Willie Jude.
