ampus lifj administrai n CONTENTS r li the broom nineteen-hundred and sixty-eight delta state college editor — fane showers associate editors Johanna hood bill watkins DEDICATION Dr. James H. McLendon, 1912-1967 Dean and Professor of History Delta State College, 1961-1967 The decision to dedicate the 1 968 BROOM to the late Dean McLendon was made prior to his untimely death which occurred December 27, 1 967. We, of the staff, had looked forward to presenting this yearbook to Dr. McLendon in appreciation of his many academic and personal contributions to our college. We deeply regret that we are now deprived of that privilege. Dr. McLendon was a man of many facets who will be re- membered not only as a fine teacher, a scholarly historian, and a civic leader, but also as a dean who served Delta State College with distinction. His untiring interest in all that touched the college won the admiration and respect of the entire student body. Dr. McLendon came to Delta State at a period of rapid growth and expansion on our campus. He brought to the position of dean dignity, foresight, and academic integ- rity. He was endowed with a quick wit and a sense of humor which he employed to lighten the burden of serious decisions. He had a talent for visualizing the future and yet being constantly attentive to the needs of today. His convincing fairness and sympathetic counseling along with his warm personality combined to make this man one whose memory death will not diminish. We are, therefore, proud to dedicate the 1968 BROOM to the late Dr. James H. McLendon. For several years he was on the coaching staff of the National Junior College All-American game at Albuquerque, N.M., and All-American High School games at Hershey, Pa., and Miami, Fla. McCool ' s first year as head coach in 1961 saw the Statesmen chalk up a 7-2-1 mark. His 1962 record was 7-2, however, the Deltans slipped to 6-3 in 1963. The Statesmen rebounded the fol- lowing season with a 7-3 showing before going 8-1 in 1965. The campaign effort dipped to 6-4 as his charges lost by seven points once, four points twice, and one point once in 1966. This year the final mark showed 5 wins and 5 losses. La., greeted Delta State with a 34-7 win, the season opener for both squads. Louisiana Tech scored first, but the States- men came right back to tie the game, with a James Hobson to Butch Coney pass. Kicking specialist Earnie Wells add- ed the extra point. From this stage of the game, the Bulldogs carried the game. FOOTBALL DSC 21 SOUTHEAST MO. 10 Stadium, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, September 23, 1967 Traveling to the Cape for an encounter with the favored In- dians, DSC scored 21 points over a two minute twenty-two second period. The Statesmen then held on for a 21-10 victory. The Statesmen trailing 10-0 in the fourth quarter, scored on a 30 yard pass for Hobson to Con- ey; a kickoff recovery by Mike Daigle, and a Wyatt Dendy punt return for 69 yards. To round out the scoring Wells kicked one ex- tra point. A great team effort pro- vided a hard fought victory. 90 DSC 21 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 19 Delta Field, September 30, 1 967. Before a capacity crowd, the Statesmen came from behind to edge out the Lumber- jacks from Nacogdoches, Texas, 21-19. The Lumberjacks scored the first touchdown, but the Green and White came back with 8:45 remaining in the half and Hobson threw a 55 yard pass strike to Coney. Wells booted the extra point. In the second half Hobson scored on an 80 yard run and a quarterback sneak to end the Delta scoring. Interior block- ing by Hughes, Patrick, Allen, Norwood, and Chaisson proved efficient. A persistent de- fense enabled the Statesmen to come out on top. 91 DSC TROY 7 Delta Field, Oct. 7, 1967. Troy State and Delta State played scoreless football for 59 minutes and 1 7 seconds until a 1 5 yd. touchdown pass from quarterback Sim Byrd to end Ken latum put the Red Wave ahead, it was a defensive battle all the way with both teams never threatening. Lynn White and Wyatt Dendy were outstanding for the Statesmen all night. DSC SAMFORD 10 34 Seibert Stadium, Birmingham, Alabama, October 1 4, 1 967 Samford University scored 27 points in the second half for a 34-10 come from be- hind victory over the Statesmen. Delta State took a 10-7 half time lead when Allen Jones picked up a fumble and ran it into the end zone and Earnie Wells kicked a 32 yard field goal. Statistically the contest was about even, but the breaks made the difference. 92 ■i DSC UTMB 19 IS Delta Field, October 21 , 1 967 Delta State for the fifth straight year defeated the Vols in a thrilling upset. The Vols scored first and for most of the first half Delta State could not hang on to the ball. Ernie Wells kicked a 37 yard field goal for the only score in the first half. With the score 11-3 in the third quarter, James Hobson took over for the injured Allen Jones and engi- neered an 87 yard scoring drive in- cluding a touchdown pass to Joe Ver- son. Delta State went for two points and made it with a pass from Hobson to Coney to tie the score. With 4:22 remaining on the clock and after a Tennessee touchdown, Wytt Dendy took a Vol punt at the Delta State 22 yard line and race 78 yards for a score. Hobson threw again to Coney for the winning two point conver- sion. 93 DSC 28 FLORENCE STATE 18 Tom Braly, Jr., Stadium, Florence, Alabama, October 28, 1967 It was on a cold October night that the Statesmen spotted the Lions 12 points in the first quarter and then came roaring back with the running of Steve Richardson and Billy Bell. Touchdowns by Richardson and Bell gave the Statesmen a 14-12 lead at the half. Two more scores raised the lead to 28-12 and not until late in the fourth quarter did the Lions threaten the score with 4 minutes remaining on the clock. The Statesmen defense led by Barton, Holmes, Lassett, and Davis contained the Flor- ence State offense. Wells kicked 4 extra points. DSC 21 JACKSONVILLE 25 Paul Snow Memorial Stadium, Jacksonville, Alabama, November 4, 1967 The Jacksonville State Gamecocks scored twice in the last quarter to defeat the Statesmen, drop- ping the Delta State record to 4-4. The Gamecocks jumped to a 12-0 lead but the Green and White came back to take a 14-12 lead at the half on a 2 yd. run by Steve Richardson and a 5 yd. touch- down pass to Coney from Hobson. In the third quarter Hobson ran for 3 yards and a touchdown, making the score 21-12. Jacksonville State finally began rolling in the last quarter and scored two touchdowns to defeat the Statesmen. 94 DSC NLSC 17 38 Brown Stadium, Monroe, Louisiana; November 1 1, 1967. Once again Delta State played a good first half, but the game resulted in the form of an Indian victory. With the score tied 10-10 at the intermis- sion, the Indians came roaring back to score 28 points to Delta State ' s 7 points and completely dominated the play. Trailing 7-0 early in the game, Steve Richardson took a pitch- out from Allen Jones and raced 35 yards for the score. Wells kicked a 41 yard field goal for the scoring in the first half. Ending the scoring for Delta State v as a touchdown pass from Allen Jones to Billy Bell and Wells kicked the point after the touchdown. DSC LA. Guard Sammy Little led the team in scoring for the second year, although he ap- peared in only 13 games due to an early season injury. Gene Kirk led in rebounding, and was second in scoring. Tommy Grimes and Little held the edge in free throw shoot- ing. Tommy Young was the team playmaker, excellent ball handler, and good shooter as he was third in scoring. Norris Ashley rounded out the original starting five and played extremely well all season before an ankle injury benched him for the last 6 games. Ashley was second in rebounding and his famous hook shot was a crowd de- light. Big Tommy AAcKiernon came off the bench early in the year when injuries hit to be- come a standout on the court with his outside shooting and rebounding. Byron Leh- man and Danny Graham took over also for injured players and many times were very in- strumental in gaining Statesmen victories. Reserves Al Pierce and Herman Coats always did a good job when the Statesmen needed a lift. The final won-lost result was not as good as possibly expected before the season started, but taking all things into consideration the season was a very successful one and the outlook is good for next year. 106 961-68 BASKETBALL TEAM ROSTER SCHEDULE 1 Magnolia Classic (Belhaven) 2 Magnolia Classic (Millsaps) 6 C.B.C. 9 Northeast Louisiana 14 U. The need for such an organization was initially suggested by the Faculty Scholarship Committee in 1965 and, following a preliminary study, an organiz- ing group headed by the late John Faulkner established the original nucleus of the so- ciety. During the early fall semester the organizational work was completed and on the recommendation of the Faculty Committee on Student Organizations the Society was approved by the President. The purpose of Omicron Delta is fourfold. First, to recognize men who have attained a high standard of leadership in collegiate activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar conspicuous attainment. Second- ly, to bring together the most representative men in all phases of collegiate life, and thus to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate interest. Thirdly, to bring together members of the faculty and student body of Delta State College on a basis of mutual interest, understanding, and helpfulness. And finally, to provide service to Delta State College. First Row: Dr. Mac G. McRaney, Faculty Sponsor; David Halbert, Vice-President; James Powers, President; Jim Mitchell, Treasurer; Dr. W. F.
