This was The Year of the Election: elections held over and over and over and over . . . 1966 was the year that was supposed to have been but never really was. This was the year the new cafeteria opened. Although linked to a flying saucer, it never really carried anyone anywhere. This was the year of the parking problem: the forerunner of more and more and more cars and people and congestion and tickets than ever before. This was Delta State ' s big year. The enrollment was at an all time high (ask those dorm students who lived three to a room). Delta State was growing and experiencing the pains of growth. More classroom buildings were in the offing, more dormitory space, and hopefully, more parking space. It had been a good year. It was the year a new staff inherited the traumas, headaches, and sponsors of a weekly newspaper. The paper tried to give welling masses their own claim to college journalism. When the scorecard is tallied for the last time and 1966 is but a memory in the college yearbook, the MISS DELTA will be remembered as one who ground her axes politely. Yes. God save our sponsors. The entire universe need not arm itself to crush him. A vapor, a drop of water suffices to kill him. But, if the universe were to crush him, man would still be more noble than that which killed him, because he knows that he dies and the disadvantage which the universe has over him; the universe knows nothing of this. All our dignity consists, then, in thought. By it we must elevate ourselves, and not by space and time which we cannot fill. Let us endeavor, then, to think well; this is the principle of morality. Since that time Kappa Delta has become a vast sisterhood of over 100 collegiate chapters with over 55,000 members. Kappa Delta came to Delta State ' s campus in the form of Gamma Psi Chapter in 1962. During Gamma Psi ' s short history its members have done much to further the traditions and ideals of the sorority. In ways of social service Gamma Psi makes weekly visits to the local convalescent home and helps with the Easter Seal drive. This year Kappa Deltas joined with Kappa Alphas in a Thanksgiving project to collect food for needy families and in a Christmas project to adopt children for Christmas. Kappa Deltas are represented among campus beauties, favorites, homecoming maids, cheer- leaders, class officers, various honoraries, the Senate, Student Government officers, and other campus organizations. Gamma Psi is especially proud to have Delta State ' s Most Beautiful as one of its members. Social events held by Kappa Deltas each year include informal date parties, the White Rose Formal or the Emerald Ball, a Mother- Alumnae Tea, and a reception honoring DSCs faculty. Kappa Deltas are united by common bonds of loyalty and sisterhood, and they aim for ex- cellence in scholarship, gracious living, and understanding of those without as well as those within their circle by striving for that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest. Kappa Alpha ' s founders chose as their spiritual father General Robert E. Lee, who was president of Washington and Lee at the time. It is to General Lee that many ideals of Kappa Alpha are traced. Kappa Alpha now claims eighty-five active collegiate chapters, all located in the South, with over 50,000 members. On November 14, 1964, what was Delta Alpha Omega Fraternity became Delta Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order. The men of Delta Beta are active in all phases of campus life. In its 98th year, Pi Kappa Alpha ranks as one of the oldest national frat ernities, with over 130 active collegiate chapters and 65,000 duly initiated members. One of the few fraternities with its National Headquarters in the South, Pi Kappa Alpha came to Mississippi in 1905 with the establishment of Zeta- Beta Chapter on December 15, 1963. PiKa became the first fraternity in the state to have collegiate chapters at all the colleges which have social Greeks. The men of Zeta Beta Chapter strive to excel in all facets of campus ac- tivity. The Pikes now hold the Inter-Fraternity Athletic Award. In campus leadership, PiKA has produced the SGA Vice President and Treasurer, Presi- dent of the freshman class, President of the Men ' s Judiciary Council, and several SGA senators. Boo Ferriss, former pitcher and pitching coach of the Boston Red Sox. Regarded as an outstanding sportsman, public speaker, and sponsor of Delta State ' s Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Ferriss has done much in ex- panding Delta State sports. He not only helps coordinate its activities, but also serves as Statesman baseball coach. He was signed by the Red Sox after his junior year of college and compiled a brilliant record of 65 wins against only 30 defeats as a right-handed pitcher be- tween 1945 through 1950, for a .684 percentage. His career was cut short by an arm injury, and after serving as pitching coach for the Red Sox he gave up pro ball, serving since 1959 as athletic director and baseball coach at DSC. Honors and citations have been many for Ferriss during his long and illustrious career in sports. But probably the greatest yet came when he was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Ferriss ' pic- ture is permanently displayed at the Mississippi Coli- seum in Jackson along with the other honorees. 148 ' J 117 ' 1ft V ' ■B bi T ■J -- nf ' fl Horace McCool Head Football Coach Aubrey Rozzell Defensive Coach Gene Chadwick Backfield Coach 149 Dan McAlpin Student Coach Ronnie Clary Student Coach Langston Rogers Sports Information Director Jimmy Warren Student Coach Raymond Morgan Student Coach John Daggett Head Manager Richard Mascagni Student Coach Jerry Sullivan Student Coach Ken Robinson Announcer 150 A 1 i B III George Abraham Head Trainer David Halbert Head Cameraman Jim Davis Trainer Richard Cox Manager Bill McAllister Manager Ken Hardin— QB Allen Jones— QB Earnie Wells— K James Hobson— QB-P STATEMEN Of 1966 Billy Buckner— QB Byron Rasco— WB Bobby Bunkley— TB Mike Daiele— WB 152 Don Fennell — FB Mac Anders— WB Jerry Hopper — TB 1 p -r . Coach Murrell, finishing his fifth year at Delta State has an outstanding record of 64 wins and 49 losses. Sophomore Sammy Little from Mt. Sterling, Ky. led the team in scoring. Junior Norris Ashley of Ingomar, Miss, and Cliff Mills of Manchester, Ky. led in rebounding. Highlights of the year were the team ' s victory over Miss. College 107-100, Sammy Little ' s 49 points against Southeastern La., double victories over Northwestern La., and a rebound vic- tory over La. College. The 66-67 campaign was a success and much valuable playing time was gained by all team members. A knee injury to starting sophomore guard, Tommy Young, from Allentown, Pa. in the 5th game was a bad break for the Statesmen but junior guard, Tommy Grimes from Jackson took over and did an excellent job, for the remainder of the season, becoming the team ' s playmaker. Big Tommy McKiernon rounded out the starting 5 with consistently good scoring and rebounding. Yarbrough 247 President and Mrs. Ewing PRESIDENTS MESSAGE For almost four decades THE BROOM has recorded the history of Delta State College students and ac- tivities. The 1967 issue will continue in the fine tradi- tion of the past. Delta State has an enviable history, noble traditions, and an inspiring heritage. Its future is frightfully challenging. As you record 1966-1967, you will also unveil visionary glimpses of the college of tomorrow. Congratulations to Miss Blacklidge, Editor; Mrs. Dianne S. Pittman, Business Manager; your staff; and to Mr. Billy G. Tatum and Miss Lucy Webb Millsaps, Faculty Advisers. You have rendered Delta State stu- dents, alumni, and future students an unrepayable serv- ice. Best wishes to all who are portrayed on these pages. Sincerely yours, J. M. A native of the Mississippi Delta, Mr. Sillers was born in Rose- dale on April 13, 1888. Mr. Sillers ' career in the House of Representatives spanned a half-century, including two decades as Speaker of the House. He served under thirteen governors — a career without pre- cedent in the annals of state history. His name was attached to more legislation perhaps than any other man ' s. His record of legislative leadership earned for him a reputation as one of the state ' s most powerful political leaders and the revered title of Mister Speaker. From its inception, Delta State College was one of Mr. Sillers ' favorite projects. His interest and legislative leadership con- tributed greatly to the growth of the college as a state in- stitution.
