BASKETBALL Delta State ' s basketball team closed out the 1964-1965 season in a blaze of glory as they won the last four out of five games. Coach Jim Munell ' s Greenies compiled a season record of 11 wins against 7 defeats. The final victory of the season, a 67-66 thriller over the Gulf State ' s Conference Champion, Northeast Louisiana, climaxed a perfect year in Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen marched through the campaign by scoring nine straight wins without a loss on their home court. Perhaps the biggest win of the season came on February 13. when they defeated the Ar- kansas State Indians, 80-76. Kay Hughes, a 6 ' 4 junior from Mayfield, Kentucky, paced the Delta State attack this year as he averaged 18 points a game. Wayne Hanes, a 6 ' 2 junior from Scottsville, Kentucky, rated second with a 15.7 average. 155

The chief spirit promoters on the Delta State campus are the cheerleaders. This group is com- posed of five people who are elected each Spring by the student body to serve during the coming year. The cheerleaders are Susan Stuart, Gale Hart- ness, Bonnie Dugger — Head Cheerleader, Marion Tuminello, and Lana Weatherly. During the year, the cheerleaders appear at each Statesman football game, conduct pep rallies, cheer at basketball games, and generally keep up the Statesmen spirit. The untiring devotion of this group has helped put Delta State among the top. Delta State fans support the Statesmen. Delta State ' s scoring punch got a tremen- dous boost from Kenny Hunt, a 5 ' 11 junior from Paragould, Arkansas. Hunt, who had just completed a three year stretch with Uncle Sam when he joined the Statesmen camp, shook off the effects of his three season lay- off as he reached his peak when he averaged 5 over 19 points in the Green and White ' s final six games. Big Jim Chancelor, a 6 ' 7 center, led the Greenies in rebounding with 189 while Jimmy Miles, a 6 ' 2 senior from Betesville added greatly with his superb defensive play. Several key reserves also played a major role in the success of the Statesmen. This season marked the third campaign for Murrell to serve as head mentor. In those years he has compiled a record of 40 victories and 25 defeats. 156
