IPIT)GWAU T. ?8 ■ A DELTA NEW TRADITIONS THROUGH NEW ACHIEVEMENTS 1964 was the year of the ousting of Krushchev, the passage of a new Civil Rights Bill, the winning of the world series by the Cardinals, and the election of Lyndon Johnson to the Presidency. It was also the year of the birth of a new MISS DELTA. Thanksgiving eve ushered in the first step of MISS DELTA ' S re-creation. The time- proven tabloid size was chosen for the make-up format. As first semester Editor Jack Steele remarked, MISS DELTA hasn t shrunk. It ' s the same size, the only difference being the print is running east to west rather than north to south. Editorials brought up issues and provoked reactions — not only from students, but also from the faculty, administration, citizens of Cleveland, and readers on other campuses over the South. Outstanding examples were the stands taken on open campus discussions of controver- sial issues, local juvenile delinquency, campus vandalsim, coed curfews, street-naming, the Student Senate, Mississippi political problems, and the ever-popular topic of lack of imported delicacies in the cafeteria. Letters to the Editor proved to be a popular section of the scandal sheet, as some chose to call the new MISS DELTA. Subjects of letters concerned education, student regulations, politics, philosophy, economics, and persons who fire newspaper editors. An unusual twist to the usual practice of not signing letters was reader Chip Gorman ' s dis- course which blasted the fifth amendment pleaders and demanded that letters be signed. Incidentally, he practiced what he preached. Probably one of the more unique features of the 1964-65 MISS DELTA was the appear- ance of two different editors in the same academic year. Jack Steele, social science major from Jackson, steered the staff through the first semester; and Barnes Carr, philosophy major from Greenwood, took over second semester. Carr was Assistant Editor first semes- ter, and Liz Thompson moved up from Copy Editor to become Assistant Editor second semester. While the executive staff made the decisions and assigned stories to be written, the department editors were the ones who bore the weight of the assignments. Stelli Cuicchi predicted fashions, Glenda Crocker reported society, Bonnie Dugger managed the feature stories, Stan Topol reviewed plays, and Jerry Harrison mailed out the bills to the reluc- tant (to pay) advertisers. Keeping us apace with the Statesman athletes was Langston Rogers, and keeping us informed on campus opinion were columnists Marion Blackwood and Colleen Kinney. Fighting blizzards, seasonal monsoons, biting dust storms, whipping winds, and sultry suns, the ever-inspired reporters braved the elements (and uncooperative arm chair editors) to make their deadlines. Looking for purple hearts, but receiving only more assignments, were the MISS DELTA reporters. An announcement that hit close to the hearts of the executive staff was the one which brought the news of the condemnation and planned destruction cf the mighty Hill Build- ing, home of MISS DELTA. In its place is to be built a new hall of learning, but the staff will always remember Hill as the site of weekend staff parties and seances, last minute stories to be written the night before publication, threatening telephone calls from Kethley Building, too-early deadlines, poison pen letters from advertisers who said we charged too much . . . and those new ulcers. If it wasn ' t for ' the Chat Chew on the weekends, we just couldn ' t have made it. Long-awaited dreams of the College and the MISS DELTA staff of having a weekly newspaper instead of a twice-monhly ' oldies but goodies sheet ' became a real ity as the second semester staff began a weekly publication schedule. With weekly publication, news was more timely; the staff did not have to cover happenings from two weeks before publication and for two weeks in advance. Taking all into consideration, the new motto of new traditions through new achieve- ments was indicative of the future of MISS DELTA. When the new staff came to power in September, a rebuilding program was necessary to overcome the shortage of staff workers. By January, the problem had evolved into a much larger one of achieving a higher level of journalism to overcome the undesirable past reputation of MISS DELTA. And to meet the demands of readers for a stronger press on campus. But we said we would overcome, and we did. 99 MUSIC EDUCATORS NATIONAL CONFERENCE The purpose of Music Educators National Conference is to promote a professional attitude among prospective teachers and educators in the field of music. The organization, which is affiliated with the national conference of Music Educators, offers its members opportunities to participate in con- ferences and conventions on the local, district, state, and national level. Music Educators National Conference is open to all music majors at Delta State College. 100 DELTA SINGERS Delta Singers is a select group of both music majors and nonmusic majors who wish to widen the scope of their musical interests through par- ticipation in an all-purpose choral organization. The chorus presents programs of general choral literature, including oratories with orchestra, in Cleveland and the surrounding area. In the spring semester, the group makes an extensive tour throughout the State of Mississippi. 101 STUDENT EDUCATION The Student Education Association is the pre-professional association for college and university students preparing to teach. Its purposes are to pro- vide opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the teaching profession through participation in the work of local, state, and national education associations, and to interest capable young men and women in education as a lifelong career and to encourage selective standards for per- sons admitted to approved programs of teacher education. i!?tK ■■■r jnr ac A- r  ASSOCIATION OFFICERS President J oan Alexander Vice President Carolyn Young Minor Coleman Secretary Joanne Wright Treasurer Elizabeth Clements Reporter Rae Winders Social Chairman Gale Hartness Faculty Advisor Dr. C. Then a car was entered into the homecoming parade with the theme Put the Bulldogs in the Doghouse. In the month of October we had Slave Day in which the members offered themselves for slaves. In the month of December we had a Christmas party for six needy children. Throughout the year we have programs such as Supervising Teachers Telling What They Expect of Practice Teachers, Practice Teachers Telling About Their Teaching Experiences, and Parents Telling What They Ex- pect of Teachers. % L PHYSICAL EDUCATION It is the aim of the Physical Education Majors Cluh to stimulate a wide intelligent interest in health, physical education, and recreation and promote professional and social cooperation between physical education majors and faculty. On the campus the club promotes recreational activities, making equip- ment and facilities available to students interested in participation. The MAJORS CLUB Physical Education Club sponsors and promotes intramural sports. The club, over the years, has helped needy families during Christmas by giving food and clothing. Participation by the bowling team in the Na- tional Bowling Tournament held in Dallas, Texas, was made possible by the financial support of the Physical Education Majors Club. WOMEN ' S ATHLETIC The Women ' s Athletic Association, commonly known as WAA, is an or- ganization to promote all forms of physical activity which makes for health and efficiency, to encourage good sportsmanship and clean playing, and to promote interest and to create leadership in athletics by training young women to interpret and enforce the rules as adopted by the American Physi- cal Education Association. The meetings of the association are held regularly of each month. The WAA is always doing some service projects. One of the main ones is that of adopting a child from a needy family for a Christmas party. One of the money-making projects is that of selling popcorn at all home basketball games. Another project for 1964-65 was that of revising the WAA Handbook. One of the best meetings is the initiation of the new members. To become an active member, one must go through the initiation. INTRAMURALS 131 DELTA PLAYHOUSE 132 Delta Playhouse has provided a variety of en- tertainment for its audience during this past sea- son. Among the outstanding plays presented were Waltz of the Toreodoes , The Little Foxes , and Fantasticks . i 133 Each year a group of girls sponsored by var- ious campus organizations compete in the Miss Delta Pageant. This event is a preliminary to the Miss America Pageant. Delta State was very proud of Miss Peggy Duncan, the college ' s 1964 representative to the Miss Mississippi Pageant, for she was among the ten finalists. Upon her marriage, however, Miss Duncan relinquished her title to first alternate, Miss Charlotte Rogers. MISS DELTA STATE 134 The Best Dressed Contest is sponsored by the MISS DELTA. Ten girls are selected by a committee composed of DSC faculty members and students to enter th e con- test. These girls are: Margaret Burkes, Beth Turner, Gayle Watkins, Sally Lary, Mary Jane Wiggins, Judy Johnston, Carol Beeson, Patty Elmore, Pat Wolfe, and Glynn Ming. The winner will compete for the national title of one of the Ten Best Dressed College Girls in America , sponsored by GLAMOUR MAGAZINE. Each of the con- testants models three outfits — the school dress, the off- campus dress, and a date ensemble. Each girl strives to exhibit good posture, poise, and gracefulness on the stage. Miss Sally Lary was chosen as Delta State ' s Best Dressed, with Miss Pat Wolfe as first alternate and Miss Margaret Burkes as second alternate. If Delta State ' s entry is a national finalist, the MISS DELTA will be notified. The winner will then go to New York, where she will be photographed and entertained by GLAMOUR. BEST DRESSED COEDS 135 «. • We were very fortunate this year to welcome two internationally famous artists to our college. The ap- pearance of these performers was made possihle through the Student Government Association in an effort to promote a cultural interest among students. The 1964-65 program presented Miss Karen Duke, who entertained her audience with a series of folk songs. Also included in this year ' s program was the Piano Duo of Nelson and Neal. Both artists were received with enthusiasm hy the Delta State faculty and students. OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS 136 Art exhibits have become an in- creasingly important part of the cultural activities at Delta State. Painting and ceramic displays of students, faculty members and out- side artists have been viewed in Roberts Memorial Library. Also student art works were shown and sold at the- Christmas Art Bazaar and the outdoor exhibit during Del- ta Council Day. ART EXHIBITS 137 ATHLETICS tap David Boo Ferris, baseball coach and athletic director whose warm smile is well known over the campus, was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame February 8 at an awards banquet in Jackson. Ferriss ' picture will be permanently dis- played at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson along with the other 15 honorees. Ferris was born at Shaw and is an alumnus of Mississippi State where he lettered in baseball. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox after his junior year in college. He was Rookie of the year his first year with the Red Sox and compiled a brilliant final recrod of 65 wins against 30 defeats as a right-handed pitcher. His pitching career was cut short by an arm injury and after serving a while as pitching coach with the Sox, he gave up pro ball and came to Delta State as athletic director. Now Ferris, as well as being athletic director and baseball coach, is also on several faculty committees and is chairman of the DSC National Defense Loan Fund. The 27-2 victory scored by the Statesmen was the first hint of the successful season to come. Fullback George Chesser led the Delta offensive attack as he scored three touchdowns. Tailback Butch Caston scored once and Payne Spence booted three of four extra points to cap off all scoring for the night. The Statesmen held only a 7-0 lead at half time, but they returned with new vigor in the final two quarters to break the contest wide open. 142 DELTA STATE NORTHEAST Delta State ' s 7-6 victory over tough North- east Louisiana College on Septemher 19, proved as expected, to be a defensive battle. The Statesmen struck early in the second quarter to surge ahead to stay when fullback George Chesser plunged in from the one yard line. Fullback Payne Spence booted the ever important point after touchdown, providing the margin of victory. The Indians came to the Delta as a ten point favorite, but a stubborn Green and White de- fensive unit proved tough, especially when Northeast was penetrating deep in Statesmen territory. f f a£ ' DELTA STATE 13 JACKSONVILLE STATE September 26, marked Delta State ' s third straight vic- tory of the 1964 season, all on the home field. This time it was the Jacksonville State Gamecocks who fell victim to the stomping Statesmen. The Statesmen took advantage of two costly Jacksonville mistakes and defeated the Gamecocks 13-0. Although each side lost the ball twice, the Statesmen were able to take advantage of an interception by Don Fennell in the second quarter to surge ahead and a fum- ble recovery by Allen Fried to set up the final, touch- down. Backs, Richard Mascagni and Raymond Morgan accounted for the actual touchdown points which, com- piled with a conversion by Payne Spence, were enough to set a score that couldn ' t be matched or topped by Jack- sonville State. DELTA STATE 12 SOUTHWEST MISSOURI After three straight home games, Coach McCool took his Squad on the road October 3, to meet Southeast Missouri State in a rugged fight to the finish. The Statesmen were forced to come from behind to gain a 12-3 decision over the Indians. First half action turned out to be a defensive battle with the Delta eleven constantly having their backs to the wall during the initial quarter. The offense finally stole the scene with a touch- down by George Chesser and one by Liberty Cash, a bright new starting man filling the position of injured tailback, Butch Caston. DELTA STATE TROY STATE 12 Following four straight victories, the Statesmen felt they were in the drivers seat as they splashed in the Red Wave of Troy State on October 10. But the Red Wave swamped the Flatlanders as they took advantage of two breaks and scored on both occasions to win 12-0. First half action provided a see-saw sight as neither team could muster anything akin to a scoring threat. Defense took the spotlight. The third quarter brought an aerial in- terception by Troy and the first score of the game. Troy ' s fourth quarter score came on a DSC punt return. The loss was Delta State ' s first to Troy since 1958. This upset broke the Statesmen ' s victoiy record. 146 D ELTA STATE HOWARD 26 The October 17 clash with archrival Howard College of Birmingham, Alabama, proved to he a considerable damper for the Delta State homecoming festivities. Strik- ing in the third quarter for 26 big points, the Bulldogs downed the Statesmen 26-8. After a scoreless first half, Howard came roaring hack. Two Delta fumbles set the stage for Howard scores. Fullback George Chesser contributed the lone Delta State score as he bulled over iirthe last minute with wing- back Quimby Morgan getting the two point conversion. s$ DELTA STATE 17 MARTIN BRANCH After two defeats, the victory-hungry Statesmen rebounded against University of Tennessee, Martin Branch to spoil Homecoming for the Vols by taking a 17-0 win. Pass interceptions by Mitch Terrell and fumble recoveries by Payne Spence and Harry Ballard proved invaluable breaks to the Green and White gridders. Delta State had three scoring chances in the first half, but could cash in only once as Chesser pushed over from the one. Second half scoring came as Bob Bain connected with Ed- die Collins in the end zone from the 16. Tailback Spence aided the cause by booting a second half field goal and the two after touchdown conversions. 148 9f u u V ■■J? DELTA STATE 34 FLORENCE STATE 12 Florence State felt a Halloween curse as Delta State dumped the Lions 34-12 on October 31, in the Statesmen ' s last home game. The DSC running backs scored by land on a series of sustained drives led by tailback Liberty Cash who tallied twice and picked up 125 yard s rushing. Others making goal-line crossings were Bain climaxing a 63 yard drive. Chesser ending another 63 yard romp, and Morgan climaxing all scoring and a 73 yard push. Spence added up 4 extra points by booting 4 out of 5 conversion attempts. Florence ' s biggest threat came just before half- time as they seemed to be closing in on the States- men, but second half scoring put the home team well in front to stay. 149 DELTA STATE ARKANSAS STATE 7 Nationally ranked Arkansas State squeezed by the Statesmen 7 to 6 on November 7. First half action, which took place in a steady downpour, proved to be a defensive battle with neither team scoring. Arkansas State broke the ice with a seven point score the first time they took possession of the ball in the third period of play. A se cond effort in this quarter was stopped as lineman Don Fennell came up with a timely pass inter- ception at the Delta eight yard line. Fourth quarter play brought a Delta State score as the team drove down field in a series of effective runs climaxed by a Bain pass to Clarence Pegram on the six and Pegram picked up the remaining necessary yardage. The signifi- cant extra point was wide to the right giving Arkansas a margin of victory. Although defeated, the Statesmen picked up 185 yards to 145 yards for the Indians in total offense. 150 DELTA STATE 21 LOUISIANA COLLEGE 14 After an open date, the Delta Statesmen journeyed to Louisiana College on November 21, for their final tilt of the season. Behind the power-horse running of George Chesser, who picked up 137 yards and two touchdowns, and the skillful quarterbacking of Bob Bain, who accounted for some 107 yards and one score, Delta State pulled a 21- 14 win. Scoring action got underway fast as each team scored the first time they got their hands on the ball, and the combined effort produced tallies in less than four minutes. Half-time score stood 14-14, but DSC clinched the vic- tory with the final scoring of the game in mid-third quarter. 151 DELTA STATE COLLEGE BAND i j V! 152 The Delta State College Band and the Delta Belles, under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Franklin, are an out- standing asset to our college. They play an important part in promoting school spirit with their faithful performances at hall games and other school functions. The group also represented Delta State in the Inaugural Parade of Governor Paul B. Johnson, and one of the most outstand- ing performances of the College Band and the Delta Belles was their representation of the state of Mississippi at the National V. F. W. Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. SANDRA THOMAS Head Delta Belle 153 The chief spirit promoters on the Delta State campus are the cheerleaders. This group is com- posed of five people who are elected each Spring by the student body to serve during the coming year. The cheerleaders are Susan Stuart, Gale Hart- ness, Bonnie Dugger — Head Cheerleader, Marion Tuminello, and Lana Weatherly. During the year, the cheerleaders appear at each Statesman football game, conduct pep rallies, cheer at basketball games, and generally keep up the Statesmen spirit. The untiring devotion of this group has helped put Delta State among the top. Delta State fans support the Statesmen. BASKETBALL Delta State ' s basketball team closed out the 1964-1965 season in a blaze of glory as they won the last four out of five games. Coach Jim Munell ' s Greenies compiled a season record of 11 wins against 7 defeats. The final victory of the season, a 67-66 thriller over the Gulf State ' s Conference Champion, Northeast Louisiana, climaxed a perfect year in Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Statesmen marched through the campaign by scoring nine straight wins without a loss on their home court. Perhaps the biggest win of the season came on February 13. when they defeated the Ar- kansas State Indians, 80-76. Kay Hughes, a 6 ' 4 junior from Mayfield, Kentucky, paced the Delta State attack this year as he averaged 18 points a game. Wayne Hanes, a 6 ' 2 junior from Scottsville, Kentucky, rated second with a 15.7 average. 155 Delta State ' s scoring punch got a tremen- dous boost from Kenny Hunt, a 5 ' 11 junior from Paragould, Arkansas. Hunt, who had just completed a three year stretch with Uncle Sam when he joined the Statesmen camp, shook off the effects of his three season lay- off as he reached his peak when he averaged 5 over 19 points in the Green and White ' s final six games. Big Jim Chancelor, a 6 ' 7 center, led the Greenies in rebounding with 189 while Jimmy Miles, a 6 ' 2 senior from Betesville added greatly with his superb defensive play. Several key reserves also played a major role in the success of the Statesmen. This season marked the third campaign for Murrell to serve as head mentor. In those years he has compiled a record of 40 victories and 25 defeats. 156 Head Basketball Coach Jim Murrell DSC 1964-65 RESULTS 72 MiUsaps 65 94 Millsaps 66 78 Northwestern Louisiana 59 61 Northwestern Louisiana 59 57 Southern Mississippi 76 63 Mississippi State 82 63 Spring Hill 61 64 Arkansas State 77 73 Arkansas A M 19 73 Martin Branch Tennessee 65 80 C. Kappa Deltas also participate in outstanding philanthrophy work such as visits to the local Convalescent Home and the annual Easter Seal Drive. The KD ' s are very proud of their new chapter room located in Fugler Dorm which will be the center of Kappa Delta activity in the future. The KD ' s participate in fraternity swaps, and intramurals; however, the Whte Rose Formal and Founder ' s Day stand out as the most important social activities. The Kappa Deltas are united under the common bond of loyalty to the colors of olive green and pearl white and to the white rose. 175 176 KAPPA ALPHA ORDER OFFICERS Jack Miller President Bobby Cauthen Vice-President Teddy Solomon Secretary Marvin Reid Treasurer A group of Confederate soldiers at Washington and Lee in Lexington, Virginia, banded themselves together under the name of Kappa Alpha Order on December 21, 1865. General Robert E. Lee, the spiritual father, was President of Washington and Lee at the time, and it is to him that many ideals of Kappa Alpha are traced. There are now eighty-three active Kappa Alpha Chapters, all located South of the Mason-Dixon Line , with over fifty thousand members. The Delta Beta Chapter was established at Delta State College on November 14, 1964. Before that time this group was the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Alpha Omega Fraternity. This chapter has produced leaders in all phases of campus life such as President of the Student Body, President of Mississippi Intercollegiate Council, Class Presidents, and various other school offices. Kappa Alpha is not just another college fraternity; it is a way of life, a philosophy of living, an Order of Christian Knights. Its influence cannot be weighed or measured or computed or analyzed; but, for its members, there is nothing more substantial, nothing more real, than the vows they have taken, the precepts which have become a part of their very souls, the strong bonds of brotherhood which have been among their clearest and most cherished blessings. The aim of the Kappa Alpha Order is to train young men to cherish the southern ideal of character by honoring and protecting pure womanhood, practicing courtesy and self-control and preferring self respect to ill-gotten gain . 178 John Almany Bobby Barr Erroll Bisso Mike Buckley Ray Buntin Richard Buntin Mike Daigle William Fair Frank Fasinski John Ferguson Jimmy Gaither Chip Gorman Phillip Grace Dan Hackett Jimmy Harpole Jerry Harrison Joe Holmes Rod Jenkins Don Massy Tom Minor Doug Murrell Gary Pace Hal Parchman Hunter Parham John Pendergrass PI KAPPA ALPA OFFICERS Tom Minor President Rod Jenkins Vice-President Dan Hackett Secretary Vince Tropeano Treasurer Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was established March 1, 1868 on the campus of the Unversity of Virginia. From the small beginnings of one collegiate chapter with six members. Pi Kappa Alpha has grown to a size of 125 collegiate chapters with over 60.000 initiated mem- bers. One of the few fraternities with its National Headquarters in the South, Pi Kappa Alpha came to Mississippi in 1905 with the establishment of Alpha-Iota Chapter at Millsaps College. On December 15, 1963 Kappa Tau Delta Local was officially chartered as the Zeta Beta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. With the founding of the Delta State Chapter, Pi Kappa Alpha became the first Fraternity in the State of Mississippi to have five collegiate chapters. Zeta Beta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha has consistently strived to set forth the important ideal of leadership in every facet of college life. This past Fall Semester the Pikes won the coveted Interfraternity Council Scholarship Plaque for the thud straight semester. This year campus leadership was synonymous with the name Pi Kappa Alpha, with Class Presidents. SGA Officers. Judicial Council President and various other campus offices.
