■ ■ ' • v Y - IS. 4 ift S ! v.v ' -- ' Jv FOREWORD This is an account of Delta State, 1963. When you turn through the pages of this yearbook, the Broom staff hopes you will find the memorable events, the moods, the opinions — all the entities of Delta State recorded here. A simple object — the door — has been used as a sym- bol throughout this book. It is a symbol to remind you of the doors you have opened at Delta State. Perhaps you were on your way to classes, or to some social event, or perhaps on your way to meet a friend. Perhaps as you opened some particular door, you were on your way to a greater insight into knowledge, a higher step into maturity, or a broader understanding of all of life. The staff further hopes that this book will serve, now and in the future, to re-open the doors to memories at Delta State. Only slight favorites at gametime, Delta com- pletely snowed the Jackson men, 41-13. Quarterback Chester Norris scored three touchdowns in this home opener as he led his team to a smashing victory. Leading by a mere eight points at halftime, by virtue of Bruce Ziegler ' s run of glory, in the fourth, Delta looked mighty good, with the tough game with Howard College not far away. DELTA STATE— 15 HOWARD COLLEGE— 3 This game proved to be the highlight of the season for the Statesmen. Delta completely overpowered previously undefeated Howard College, with a 15 to 8 victory. While Howard managed only 6, the Statesmen collected 25 first downs and allowed the Bulldogs only 45 yards rushing to their 290. Delta ' s 15-8 win over the Bulldogs came as the sole product of desire on the part of every member of the Statesmen squad. Each man played his position as if there would be no tomorrow, doing his job and then some. The team clears the field for Davenport. PAUL GARRETT G DOUG TAYLOR T HARRY BALLARD G Sportsmanship Award DELTA STATE— 18 MARTIN BRANCH— 19 Again, the extra point haunted the happy Statesmen. Jubilant over their rival Howard College the week before, the Deltans couldn ' t muster that needed extra point to match the one the Vols managed to boot. Delta State brought back a one point loss, although Gale Davis turned in his best performance, rushing for 86 yards. Delta tallied first on an 18-yard spurt by halfback Donnie Cotten, but failed to make the extra point. How- ever, the Statesmen ' s lead was shortlived, as Florence State ' s fullback Carl Barton took the kickoff and returned it 75 yards to the Delta eight-yard stripe. The extra point, which put the Lions ahead at halftime, was made by Bobby Jackson. Halfback Bruce Ziegler started the Statesmen on the comeback train in the third quarter as he took a Lion punt and raced 60 yards for the tally. Larry Wood notched six points while rushing for 76 yards to lead the Green and White in this victory. BOBBY PAYNE Cotton chalks up yardage for the Statesmen. 253 PHIL ARNOLD T AUGUSTUS DELLA PIETRA T DELTA STATE— 12 NORTHEAST LOUISIANA— This game was played before a slim crowd in a driving rain on a muddy field, but the Statesmen overcame the ele- ments and a determined Northeast Louisiana State squad to defeat the Indians 12-0. Halfback Donnie Cotton raced in for the first Delta tally and at halftime the score stood 6-0 in Delta ' s favor. Northeast was denied scoring bids in the second half of play by the stubborn Delta defense, and the Statesmen went on to win in the fourth quarter, as Cotton scored again.
