Caylor, Head of the Science De- partment, came to Delta State College in 1931, and left on April 27, 1958. He lives in the hearts of those whom he taught and of those who knew and loved him. He lives in the work he did not only at Delta State, but in all the United States. He lives with God . . . Dedication The staff of the 1959 BROOM, on behalf of the student body of Delta State College, wishes to express appreciation to one who we think has added much to the standing and good spirit of Delta State. His untiring effort is an example of true wisdom and intellectual leadership. Serving as a personal friend and advisor to the students, he is admired and respected by all who know him. The 1958 Delta State Statesmen, beset by early injuries and lack of per- sonnel, ended the season with a 2 won and 6 lost record. The Statesmen opened the season here on Delta Field and were defeated by a superior Northeast Louisiana team, 23 to 0. The Statesmen threatened to score several times during the contest but were unable to come up with the scoring punch. For the next contest, the Statesmen traveled to Troy, Alabama, to take on the Troy State Red Wave. The Statesmen lost a hard fought battle 18 to 0, and lost tackle John Hamner for the rest of the season with an injury. The Statesmen broke into the scoring for the first time against Arkansas A M here on Delta Field, but lost by a close 13 to 7 margin. After an open date, the Statesmen played host to Arkansas State Teachers and lost a thriller by a bare 27 to 25 count. The Statesmen were leading during the last half, but a last minute pass play for the Arkansas Teachers gave them the final two point margin for the victory at Delta ' s Homecoming. Sammy Kendricks and Slick McCool each picked up two touchdowns for the right to lead the Statesmen. The Martin Branch of the University of Tennessee were sited for the next opponents here on Delta Field and the Statesmen were shut-out by the Junior Vols by a 14 to count. The Statesmen caught fire in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and downed Henderson State by a 13 to 6 count. Slick McCool was again the big gun for the Statesmen, scoring both touchdowns and running the extra point. The Statesmen rounded out the season with an impressive 28 to victory over the Livingston State Tigers. Slick McCool led he offensive attack with two TD ' s and one extra point to round out his college career.
