His reply was, They all will be tough—no breathers. But as the season rolled along, the victims fell by the wayside as Delta State rolled along, stronger each week, to its undefeated, untied, and best season ' s record in the history of the school. Times had changed from the days when some of the twenty graduating Seniors on this squad were Freshmen on the gridiron, and only won one game that year, to the mediocre seasons while Sophomores and Juniors, to topit off by winning them all this season. They leave a string of twelve victories in a row over a period of two years for the underclassmen of the gridiron to add to next year. The Statesmen opened at home on Delta Field by downing the Majors of Mi I Isaps 35-6 in a game that was counted on to go either way. Jimmy Sanders had a field night for himself by scoring two touchdowns and five extra points besides gaining 147 yards in eleven carries and catching three passes. Everyone got into the game as DSTC overwhelmed Millsapsin all departments. Padavon caught a 30 yard pass in the end zone for one T. D. Then thelndians of N. E. Louisiana came to town and went home defeated 30-12. The first quarter end- ed scoreless but Jackie Pope tooka pass from Garner for a T.D.to make it 6-0 at the half. Sanders scamper- ed 51 yards to start things rolling and the Statesmen had a 24-0 lead before N. E. Louisiana could score. The line played well and Jimmy Sanders had a 14 yard average in 8 carries from scrimmage. Summwy Ttfr (CONT.) The statesmen traveled to Troy, Alabama, to encounter the stiffest competition to date. Jackie Pope was the big gun in this game after the Statesmen settled down to business after the second quarter started. He had a 9.7 Average in 10 carries before breaking his leg in the fourth quarter. Troy did not score until the fourth quarter. Arkansas A. M. came to Cleveland undefeated but the power of the AIC went home beaten 32-0. This game saw the Statesmen at their best. Sanders scored two T . D . ' s and Garner, Covington, and Parker one each. The Boll Weavils could not even muster a touchdown against the fired-up Statesmen reserves. After a week ' s layoff, Mississippi College went down 25-0 at Clinton . The Statesmen had their off-night of the season but still kept their record clean. Scoring chances were muffed time after time, but the Deltans did manage to get four T.D. ' s by Sanders, Garner, Covington, and Lipe. Three pass interceptions by Whites, Garner, and Lipe were the defensive highlights of the game. Then the Kiwanis sponsored game with Livingston State at Demopolis, Alabama . Another game which saw the Statesmen at their true form and saw them score six T.D.s and two called back, one a 75 yard romp by Hubbard. Sanders started the scoring with a 64 yard T.D. pass from Garner. Lipe added three more for the reserves and Garner and Covington one each. Net total offense was 503 yards to the Tiger ' s 136 in the one- sided game. Does anyone remember who got the game ball? Southern State had a good record before coming to Delta Field but the traditional Homecoming crowd spurred the Statesmen to show their best offensive of the season and shutout the Muleriders 53-0. The reserves played more than half the game and scored three T.D.s, two by Mike Nicholson passes. Sanders scored one on a 82 yard runback of the opening half kickoff . Covington scored on a pass, Garner on a sneak, Hubbard and Mc- Caleb on short bucks. Then the big game of the season with highly rated S.E. Missouri at Cape Girardeau. The regulars played the whole game and came out on the winning side 20-6 by playing the best game of the season. Two more T.D.s could have been scored, but Hubbard was the sparkplug with 178 yards in 20 carries and one T.D. to his credit. Garner got one on a sneak in the third period and Sanders one on a 35 yard sprint in the first quar- ter. The Indians scored on a 21 yard pass from Yeargains to end, Sneider, in the end zone in the fourth quar- ter to make it 14-6 but Hubbard punched one over to ice the game. The line blocked beautifully and led by Whites at linebacker andRozzell at tackle, the Statesmen played the best defensive game of the season. Five passes were intercepted by Delta State throughout the night. ,. • G. J.
