D. President Delta State Teachers College As the beautyof our Delta country is reflected in the beauty and fragrance of the magnolia blossom, so is the characterand life of our land reflected in the loveliness and strength of character of our young women and young men. Congratulations to you who give this 1954 edition of The Broom to the history of Delta State in selecting as a theme the magnolia blossom. W. M. KETHLEY JOE FARRAR, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty Delta State Teachers College Officially the state flower of Mississippi is the Mag- nolia, around which you have built the theme of The Broom . In reality the flower of Mississippi is its youth — you and thousands of others like you. If the State ever bursts into bloom in keeping with its potential, it will do so, not because it is the blossoming season for the Mag- nolia, but because you — all of you — blossom into fine and forceful young men and women willing and prepared to assume your responsibilities as leaders in Mississippi ' s pro- gress. It is a magnificent challenge you face. I dare you to meet it head on . Sincerely, Joe Farrar 19 FACULTY HEADS, DEPARTMENTS ETHEL CAIN, Ed. M. NEW YORK 19, N. I ' ve made my decision, and I ' m passing it along with some misgivings, because (a) I ' d like to give each contestant a prize, and (b) I know how wrong I can bo — after all, I ' m the fellow who, 16 years ago, refused to hire Mary Martin. May I say, however, that I got a kick out of seeing all the photos. Remembering what some of my old school teachers looked like, it ' s nice to realize that some of today ' s kids — in the South, at least — are going to get a break. Freddy was the son of Mr . and Mrs . H . S . Black of Jennie, Arkansas . He was a quarterback on the Delta State football team, a member of the track team, and had been elected one of the Favorites of the Sophomore Class. His loss is deeply regretted by all of the students and the faculty at Delta State. rftfiieticA, ATHLETIC COMMITTEE Wiley, Brand, Bass, Smith, Young 1953 DELTA STflTCSmcn I COVINGTON J - ,. Next came Howard, and they met with the same fate. By this time two new faces came into grid promin- ence. These two were Jimmy Sanders and Billy Hubbard. Of course, Willo Goodwin, Jack Whites, Dick Goodman, George Gronerand all the other old heads were right in there fighting and they went into the Arkansas A. and M. game with high hopes of making it a 3-0 record. But disaster struck as did an accurate toe in the last few seconds of play and the Green ies dropped a hard to the Boll Weevils. (Continued) AUSTIN PEAY 20 DELTA STATE ARKANSAS A M 22 DELTA STATE 20 Austin Peay followed with a 20-0 decision, but the Deltans turned in what was described by the coaches and fans alike as one of the hardest fought and best games of the year. Then came the Hi 1 1 toppers. They took advantage of their many breaks and the Greenies injuries to trip their opponents by a close three point decision. But there is where the Greenies Grid Machine became a destructive menace. Livingston walked on Delta Field ready to trip the Greenies to shreds, but when the dust had settled and our halfbacks had retired for the night, the score was a mere 67-6 in favor of a revamped Statesmen squad. During these games, two new linemen showed what fans could expect in years to come. (Continued) WESTERN KENTUCKY 21 DELTA STATE 19 LIVINGSTON STATE 6 DELTA STATE 67 Carl Bull Smith and Franklin Bird dog Talbert looked like the answer to Coach Chadwick ' s dream of six-foot-plus ends with plenty of beef to spare. But the routing did not stop there. Nextweek, theMuleridersof Southern State fell to a merciless onslaught at the hands of the tough Delta line and the array of fleety backs. Then along with the rain and slosh, the Lions of Troy State of Alabama came to Delta Field. A bit of last-minute strategy by the Deltans gave the Trojans two points, but also brought the ball out to the 20-yard line, where big George Gronerputatoe in the wet pigskin that carried it to the Trojan six and broke their back. Final count, Delta six; Troy two. (Continued) lr SOUTHERN STATE DELTA STATE 42 TROY STATE 2 DELTA STATE 6 TAMPA UNIVERSITY 6 DELTA STATE 13 Then the long jaunt to Tampa. Under the capable direction of fie Id genera I Gip Garner, the Statesmen took the Tampa Tro- jans into camp with a 13-6 victory and the end of another sea- son. And what an end! The Trojans were picked to snuff the Delta fire by at least two touchdowns. And so it is. A record of six wins and three losses. After a good start, the attack seemed to sag at mid-season, but under the ever watchful eyes of Coaches Gene Chadwick and Horace McCool, the fuse was lit in the Livingston game that flared our boys and was the downfall of four straight Delta opponents. 9H h.; D€LTfl GRONER Tackle STflTESfllCI] — 9 T.
