She is best known to most of us as Miss Virginia ... an advisor, a friend, and an inspiration. Since she came to Delta State in 1927, Miss Virginia has carved a place in the hearts of all Delta State students with her kindness and under- standing. She is always willing and ready to offer a kind word or a guiding hand to all those whose problems she has made her own. It is indeed fitting that we should dedicate this Mimosa Edition to one who herself is so active at Delta State . . . Meeting by the MIMOSA 3n MmwHy, (ty JEFFERSON DAVIS MILLER 1884 - 1952 Auditor and Bookkeeper of the Delta State Business Office 1941 - 1952 Vacuity President William Marion Kethley. LL. D. Delta State Teachers College The abundant and beautiful blooms of the pink mimosa trees are a familiar part of our campus land- scape. As these mimosa trees grow and flourish and mul- tiply and flower so abundantly just so do the seeds of character implanted in the disciplines of college life grow and fruit and flower beautifully in the lives of our grad- uates. W. M. Kethley, President Joe Farrar. Ph. D. Dean of the Faculty I am told that the theme of the Broom this year is the mimosa tree which the dictionary defines as an act- ing tree because it closes its leaves at night. We love the mimosa trees on our campus not because they close their leaves at night but because they open their leaves and blossoms during the day and share their beauty and strength with all who chance to look. This tree typi- fies in a way, I think, the kind of young men and women we are trying to develop at Delta State — young men and women who will radiate beauty and strength and good ness throughout the broad lands of Mississippi. It is a worthy work we are trying to do. Lets join hands and hearts — faculty, students, alumni, and other friends of the institution — in our efforts that the job may be done well. Good wishes to everyone of you. Joe Farrar FACULTY HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS Ethel Cain, Ed. M. Head of Department of Health and Physical Education Richard Lee Caylor, Ph. D. J. Smith Jay Harris vr Billy Hitch Manager Summing, Up, It ' s a long haul from August to November and the only breathers on the Delta schedule were open dates. The Greenies won their first two games, split the next pair and then dropped the last three. A good year? It ' s according to how you look at it. The Statesmen opened with a bang by downing the MILLSAPS MAJORS of Jackson, Mississippi, 28-0. James Ratcliff and Bryce Griffis were the big guns in the victory. Ratcliff scored one touch- down himself, tossed two scoring passes and kicked four extra points. Griffis grabbed one scoring pass and hauled back a punt 68 yards for another tally. Clarence Wilkinson led the ground-gainers with 96 yards. Then the Greenies journeyed to Jackson, Tennessee to meet UNION UNIVERSITY and they came away with a 37-0 trouncing to their credit. Leonard Cain led the way with an 83-yard scoring sprint and six more points garnered on a pass. Ratcliff flipped an- other touchdown pass to Tom Holloway and Clarence Wilkinson, Paul Prestage, and Bobby Sanders were the other men who crossed the goal . . . The Statesmen came home to perform before the alumni on Homecoming Day but they suffered their first setback of the season 39-7 at the hands of AUSTIN PEAY. Delta scored first on a 36-yard pass from Ratcliff to Jim McCaleb, but from there on it was all Austin. Ted Trenton paced the winners as he picked up 151 yards from scrimmage . . . if f It V T W. S. Donald Manager Sximminty lip. After the loss, the Statesmen hit the comeback trail and rallied to down highly-favored MURRAY-STATE 33-19. Paul Prestage broke the back of the Kentucky team when he intercepted a lateral in the opening period and sprinted 45 yards to paydirt. Quarterback Ratcliff shoved across three markers himself and Wilkinson added the last six-pointer on a 53-yard jaunt. The Thoroughbreds crossed the Greenies - goal line thrice but the Statesmen defense was able to stifle other threats . . . Delta invaded the Blue Grass State in the next encounter onlv to suffer a 35-13 defeat at the hands of WESTERN KENTUCKY. Jimmy Feix connected on 16 out of 20 passes to baffle the Statesman defenders, while fullback McFadden was a source of endless worry overland. Ratcliff tallied all 13 points for the Deltans .... SOUTHERN STATE of Magnolia, Arkansas, invaded Delta Field to meet the Statesmen in their last home game of the season. One of the better games of the season saw the Muleriders gain an early lead, lose it momentarily in the second half, and then recapture their advantage to win by a one-touchdown margin. Ratcliff fired two touchdown passes, one to Cain and one to Joe Eidt, and Wilkin- son accounted for the other six. Vance Roberts tallied three times for Southern State. Delta went to the Bayou State to meet NORTHEAST STATE COLLEGE in the last game of the season. The Indians punctured the double-stripe twice in the second period and could never be headed. A Ratcliff -to-Wilkinson aerial gave the invaders their only points in the opening period.
