Recreational fa- cilities, such as bad- minton, ping pong, and shuffleboard are open to all students. There is an old-fashioned square dance here one night a week. The tennis courts, which are newly equipped for night use, and an outdoor swimming pool add to the recreational opportunities at Delta State. In Scott Dining Hall tasty meals are served under the supervision of trained dietitians. Meals are served cafeteria style. Since Dean Farrar came to Delta State in 1947, he has been a continual inspiration to the students on this campus. Through his thoughtfulness and personal interest in each student and faculty member, he has added greatly to the tradition of friendliness at Delta State. 19 INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING State of AUssissippi His Excellency HUGH WHITE Governor of Mississippi OFFICERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES R. Delta State Teachers College One of the unforgettable influences of the life at Delta State is the spirit of the school, a good part of which emanates from its location in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. There is a certain warmth of spirit, a genuineness of feeling, and a hospitality and friendliness that becomes our students and makes itself a part of our campus life. There is no place like the Delta, and we, who are fortunate to have our lot cast here, pass the brimming cup of hospitality from our own generation of students and faculty to the unending procession of those who are yet to come. W. M. Kethley, President JOE FARRAR, Ph. D. Dean of the Faculty Friendliness is a campus tradition here because the students and faculty through a quarter of a century have determined that it should be. It is a desirable tradition, and all of us should treasure and foster it. But I would remind you that friend- liness alone will not make of us a great institution of higher learning, and I would challenge you and those who follow you to add to this tradition those of sound scholarship, independent think- ing, and exemplary living that there may con- tinue to develop in this soil an institution to which all Mississippians may point with justifiab le pride. He is the author of The Enemy, a novel recently published by Houghton-Mifflin Company. Wirt Williams is the son of Mr. Wirt Alfred Williams, head of the Department of Social Sciences of Delta State. Dear Miss Greenlee: Picking winners in beauty contests certainly ranks as one of our rasher contemporary pastimes. I do so only v;ith the greatest timidity--and the security of being some eight hundred miles from the scene of the doings. The four young ladies who reached the finals this year made the job particularly tough: they were all so pretty. After the longest kind of pondering, and with help of a couple of flips of the coin, I finally made an X on the back of one of the pictures. I only wish I could have picked four. Although the mercury showed above 100, even the dumbest freshman on the turf (there were 27 of them) could feed the cold, bleak wind from the north when he got a glance at the schedule. Was Alabama there? Florida State U.. ' Yep, they were very much there . . . but that comes later. First the boys migrated over to Arkadelphia on Sept. 15 open the season and slip past the Ouachita College Baptists for a 12 to victory. Bobby Sanders, in his first game for the Greenies, got the first TD of the year on a pass interception which he hauled 35 yards. Quarterback Flinging Freddie sneaked over from the one for the second after he had hit McCaleb with a 22 yard pass. Delta 12 — Ouachita 0. The next week the Greenies threw back their shoulders and invaded Montgomery, Ala., to meet the great Crimson Tide. The rain was falling even faster than TD ' s. The Greenies got rain (or Tide) in their eyes and ran wild, tieing the Tide on first downs, beating them on passes completed, and drew only 15 yards in penalties to Bama ' s 105. Woodall crashed across the ' Bama goal line — only to have the play called back for a penalty. Yep, the boys really traveled; overlooking only one small detail, 13 times a ' Bama man found his way across the Greenie goal line. Incidentally the score . . . Delta 0— Alabama 89. The Statesmen came home the next week, Sept. 28, to meet the Northeast Louisiana Indians in their first home game, which was played at Clarksdale because the Statesmen ' s home grid. Delta Field, was in the throes of construction. The Greenies seemed recovered from the Tide and broke loose for two quick TD ' s, one set up by a Foster to Porter aerial, with Foster sneaking across and another on a Foster pass to Woodall soon after DeVault covered a fumble on the Indian 33. However, the Indians broke loose and returned the two TD ' s— plus three more. The Statesmen ' s third score climaxed an 83 yard drive via the arm of Paul Leslie and Billy Tatum ' s running, with Foster ripping over. Delta 20 — Northeast 32. Screw and The Sparrow The scene of battle shifted next Saturday to Greenville with the Arkansas State Indians ' as the intended victims. The power-laden Arkansas boys proved too big a bite for the light Greenies and swamped them. Indian Bevala- que and Cole both returned to the line-up in this game from pre-season injuries and gave excel- lent performances. Delta — Ar- kansas 42 From Greenville it was the road again for the Statesmen. This time they sojourned to the land of sunshine to battle the Florida State U. Seminoles. ' The Greenies made a valiant stand on the ground. Their line, held by such notables as Floyd, Buckley, Owens, Smith, Terry, Stutts, DeVault and Barrett, forced the Seminoles to take to the air to hand the Statesmen their fourth straight loss. This game marked the beginning of Delta ' s plague of injuries when Delta ' s No. 1 fullback. Wimpy Reed, received a shoulder injury which kept him out for the rest of the season. Delta — Florida State U. 34. Saturday night again and the last home game of the season saw the Greenies putting on their best show of the year before home fins against the Southwest Missouri Bears. Sanders started the ball rolling with his second TD of the year. Continuance of the plague, however, soon sent Foster to the bench momentarily to join Reed, T. J. Smith, and Porter — all inactive. Leslie called from the stands, and despite the fact that he was still stiff from an injury, went into the game. During the second period, Foster flipped a TD aerial to Woodall and later sneaked across for the third tally, with Woody Woodall converting as usual to establish a 19 to 7 lead at the half. Covington, filling the fullback spot, carried 24 times during the game. Guard Ralph Stutts made the other Greenie TD by scooping up a fumble and lugging it 35 yards. The Bears scored twice more to move up 26 to 21 in favor of Delta with the game in the closing minutes. A Bear half put the clincher on when he intercepted a Delta pass on his own 35 and dashed across to win for Southwest. Delta 26 — Southwest Missouri 27 Williams Surholt HoUinsworth Foster Hemphill Thomas Bevalaque Smith Not Pictured: Wilkerson Lewis On October 27 the Greenies took the pigskin onto the bluegrass of Kentucky to tilt against Murray State Thoroughbreds. The Thoroughbreds struck three times in the first five minutes on a rain-soaked grid to lead the Greenies 20 to 0. With five starters on the bench, the Statesmen fell to the Murray ax. The Thoroughbreds did all their scoring in the first half — a spirited Greenie line holding them all during the second half. Lady Luck stopped the only Delta near TD. Keenum lost a shoe in the soft turf and fell after having gained a clear route to the goal line. Delta — Murray 33 The Greenies returned to Kentucky on Nov. 3 to stalk the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, at Bowling Green. With both QB ' s, Foster and Leslie, out for the season, Barrett was switched from end to command the T-slot. In the freezing Kentucky weather, the Greenies were no match for the Hilltoppers who rolled up A6 points. Cole accounted for the lone Delta TD. Delta 6 — Western Ken- tucky 46 The road-weary Statesmen got a two-week rest period before their seasonal final against Southern State in Magnolia, Ark., on November 17. The Greenies put up their toughest bout of the season. The Greenies rolled over in the first five minutes of play, but the TD was canceled by a penalty. Continued penalties hampered the Greenies ' offensive, but the fighting Delta line forced the Southern State Muleriders to the air before they were able to score. Even with Coving- ton ' s sprints and Barrett ' s tosses to ends Porter and Wilkinson, the Greenies were bested by the Arkansas crew. Delta — Southern State 14 -lAl I 44 % i ' v.
