JOE FARRAR, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty In the early days of the Second World War an Englishman is said to have re- marked. The lights are going out all over Europe. Were he to speak today, he might well say The lights are going out all over the world. They are unless you and your generation can and will furnish the type of leadership the world needs — men and women of great faith, of charity, of hope, of insight, and of un- faltering courage. In future years when memory brings back this moment to your minds, it is my hope and prayer that you may be able to say, I came to maturity at a moment of great challenge when the world called for volunteers who would give themselves to world service, and I responded as best I could. I gave myself wholeheartedly to courageous and humane living. JOE FARRAR Dean of the Faculty
