EX LIBRIS LOUISE CALVERT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FRANK JOHN LOYACONO BUSINESS MANAGER Published by the Students of MISSISSIPPI DELTA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Cleveland, Mississippi xoom FOREWORD You do not have to be Diogenes nor have Aladdin ' s lamp to find in these pages all sorts of lights: search lights, guiding lights, spot lights, flood lights — yea, even glaring lights and tail lights! But we who have prepared this book for you simply hope to have cast a feeble reflection on the year of 1950-51 at Delta State. The Staff I r J3u. DELTA STATE TEACHERS,_COLLEGE Established by legislative act in 1924 and located In Cleveland. Mississippi, on a site donated by Bolivar County. First session began on September 15. 1925. CONTENTS College Faculty Classes Activities Features Organizations Athletics Campus Hie Advertisements ETHEL CAIN GLADYS CASTLE DEDICATION The staff of the 1951 BROOM dedicates this book to MISS ETHEL CAIN and MISS GLADYS CASTLE. Miss Cain, who is Head of the Department of Health and Physical Education, has been a member of the faculty of Delta State since 1931 and has, throughout these years, done much to develop the Physical Education Department and to bring recog- nition to the department and, consequently, to our college. Miss Castle is an alumna of Delta State, of the class of 1926. Immediately after graduation she entered upon her duties as secretary to the Dean of the Faculty and has continued in that capacity during the intervening years. She has taken a personal interest in all of the students with whom she has come in contact and has always been ready to help them. We, in dedicating this book to these lovely ladies, wish to turn the limelight on them for they have been guiding lights of inspiration for the students of Delta State. KETHLEY, President. ■£ ' -  ■JOE FARRAR, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty In the early days of the Second World War an Englishman is said to have re- marked. The lights are going out all over Europe. Were he to speak today, he might well say The lights are going out all over the world. They are unless you and your generation can and will furnish the type of leadership the world needs — men and women of great faith, of charity, of hope, of insight, and of un- faltering courage. In future years when memory brings back this moment to your minds, it is my hope and prayer that you may be able to say, I came to maturity at a moment of great challenge when the world called for volunteers who would give themselves to world service, and I responded as best I could. I gave myself wholeheartedly to courageous and humane living. JOE FARRAR Dean of the Faculty Faculty Heads of Departments Ethel Cain, Ed. M. The photo- graphs ot t ' ie candidates, which vou submitted, were all so attractive that I found it difficult to make a decision. If was also difficult to make my selection without seeing and talking to each contestant. The winners, rarked on t h e backs of each photograoh, were selected on the basis of person- ality, character, and intelligence, as well as for natural beauty. My choice was influenced, of course, by my great interest in and admiration for the Natural Gir I. If the contestants dre ever in New York, it would be a pleasure to meet them. With best wishes to the contestants, to the staff of the 3room and to the students of DELTA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE, Sincerely yours, Beauty $a ie BlaUve Heauty . . lanceA JlUtAcsuf i HeaUttf, . . Coach Chadwick, for the first time, had more than adequate help on his staff in the person of Bobby Barbour. Much credit is given to these two men for the splendid performance of the Statesmen throughout the season. Coach Chadwick is Mr. Football himself and Barbour was one of the outstanding fullbacks of the South. Under their capable leadership, the Statesmen proved to be one of the better teams in the rank of small colleges. Facing a schedule that included colleges much larger than Delta, the Statesmen gave their best in each and every contest. We pay tribute to our coaches and our beloved Statesmen. In the initial grid game Delta defeated Ouachita College of Arkansas 27-0. With little Claude Woodall leading the way the Statemen found no problem in solving the Ouachita offense and defense. In the first quarter Woodall raced 45 yards for Delta ' s first touchdown and from there on the issue was never in doubt. %, %. ' fc, «fc % 2 1 1 53 yn COLE TERREY JOHNSON Some coaches believe it is bad to open the season with an easy victory. This proved true at Delta, for Alabama State ran rough-shod over the Statesmen to the tune of 22-6. The Delta line put up a terrific battle, but in the later part of the game Alabama State began to roll. Fred Foster scored Delta ' s lone touchdown. The Statesmen proved to be true men of the gridiron, for the fol- lowing week they crushed highly rated Miss. Southern 19-13. The Statesmen were at their peak for this game, and they were not to be denied. Delta felt the season complete after dumping Miss. Southern into the defeated ranks. Last year Miss. Southern knocked over Delta by the same score, 19-13. At? The fine arm of Foster; our glue-fingered ends and hard charging line proved fatal to the men of Southern. Big John Brewer, senior end, accounted for two touchdowns and Claude Cyclone Porter got one. Ox Terry attempted three from placement and hit one. Fats Dalton did a superb job in his relief of Foster. The Statesmen celebrated Homecoming by sinking the Memphis Navy 75-6. This is known as the Holiday for Touchdowns . Delta ' s touch- down parade was led by Kelly and Mimbrell with two each followed by Foster, Petersen, Barrett, Bevelaque, Tolbert, Brewer, and Griffis. In the conversion department Woodall hit six and Ox booted one. There always has to be a defense and Delta ' s line did a wonderful job in holding the Middies in check. Delta ' s offensive blocking was slightly better than sensational. Arkansas State was next, for the Statesmen were still end-zone happy. This was the second road game of the season, and it proved as suc- cessful as the first. The Indians fell under the wrath of the Statesmen ambush, 19-6. This was sweet revenge, for the Indians scalped the Statesmen 7-6 in 1949. It should have been 7-7, but it seems Blind Jim was the field judge that night. This year the Indians were observ- ing Homecoming, but is appears that their teepee ' s collapsed. Kelly, Reed, and Foster scored for Delta, with Woodall kicking one from place- ment. Delta ' s line once more proved to be up for the occasion. PETERSEN WOODALL REED ' J f i ' 2 l( 3 The Delta aerial circus hit Southwest Missouri State with Fred (The arm) Foster as ring-master. He passed them dizzy and never let up. It was a wonderful show with the ■whole Delta team getting in the act. Brewer and Kelly got two touch- downs apiece followed by Foster, Wilkinson, and Winona Hemphill with one each. Constantly being on the road proved to be a serious handi- cap to the Statesman. In their next outing at Evansville, Indiana the Deltans fell by the score of 19-6. The Statesmen fought all the way, but they just didn ' t have it. Fats Dalton, Delta ' s freshman quarterback, scored the only touchdown. The Statesmen returned to Delta Field for their final home game and bowed to Western Kentucky, 2G-7. This was the second team that truly seemed to be superior to our States- men. There is no excuse here, for Western had the better team. Lipe, Delta ' s hard charging fullback, scored the lone touchdown. Delta took the long jaunt to Florida and found summer still lingering at Tampa U. The long trip, combined with the hot weather led to Delta ' s downfall. Tampa won, 34-6. The States- men held them for three rock-em-sock ' em quarters, but finally wilted under the pounding and hot sun. Foster accounted for Delta ' s only score. Road-weary and injury-riddled the Statesmen headed for Hammond, La. In this their final game, the Statesmen were defeated by Southeastern Louisiana, 20-7. The Statesmen made the gallant effort, but they just couldn ' t keep the Lions caged in. After leading at the half 7-6, Delta folded in the final half. Kelly once more hit the scoring column as he counted Delta ' s only touchdown. Woodall booted the place- ment giving Delta seven points. J. Tabb C.
