Delta State Teachers College This is our Twenty-fifth Anniversary. In these years we have had the privilege of sharing with you the responsibility and joy of building an institution. As we look forward to new responsibilities and greater educational services we shall rely all the more upon you for your support of Delta State Teachers College and the ideals for ■which she stands. W. M. Kethley JOE FARRAR, Ph.D. Dean of the Faculty TO ALL STUDENTS: This book is a pictorial story of your life and the life of your fellows on Delta State campus. It should tend to bind you to the institution for all time to come and to make you vitally interested in its welfare. If it does, then I know you will not permit yourselves to forget that the institution is dependent upon you, those who have preceded you, and those who will follow for much of the public support which will largely determine whether it moves forward to greater glory and greater service or stands still, and perhaps slowly decays. In a way Delta State ' s destiny is in your hands: do not fail her. Joe Farrar Dean of the Faculty ALBERT LEON YOUNG. Ph.D. Head oi Department of Education WIRT ALFRED WILLIAMS. The Statesmen had a record of five victories and four defeats and an over-abundance of hustle and endurance. The coaching was superb, and the backing the student body gave the Greenies was superlative all through the season. Opening their season in mid-September. Delta State defeated the Arkan- sas A M Aggies 20 to 6 on the turf at Delta Stadium. Bobby Barbour. Tony Grezaffi. and Charles Graham scored the touchdowns for the Green and White Bill Sugar Durham was responsible for Delta ' s win with his expert quarterbacking and sound football principles that were employed in whipping ,he Kfssippi Southern won over our beloved Statesmen at Hattiesburg a week later but not before the Deltan ' s scared the day-lights out of the South- erners for three and a half quarters. The game ended 20 to 13. but the out- manned Greenies never gave up and were in there pitching right up to the final gun. Bill Durham scored a t.d. in the early minutes of the second quarter, and Claude Woodall. freshman, tied the game late in the third quarter. Southern used the two platoon system, which was the determining factor that led to Delta ' s first loss of the season. Perhaps, over-confidence was the sole reason the Statesmen suffered their second defeat at Livingston. Alabama, the next Saturday. The Alabama eleven used one pass play and that was good enough to win. Delta s big line (considered the biggest in the school ' s history) pushed the Livingston eleven all over the field, but failed to produce the necessary touchdowns to win the game. Walter Hollingsworth Kenneth Lawrence I: Bob Howell David Lindh -— -=- yt) H. G. Hughes David Lingle James Kelly George Lipe ■M ■ ' s fM m - T ii .;,. ' T pV|  •O vS Buddy Madden Edwin Reed James Magers Bill Sowell c=si Jimmy Peterson Ray Smith Bobby Pruitt Louis Strickland HIGHLIGHTS OF 1949 Memphis State ' s team, which is considered by many as the finest small college team in the mid-south, rolled over the Deltan ' s 47 to in their quest for national ranking. The Deltan ' s fought hard, but superior odds were too great at Crump Stadium, and the Tigers eventually went on to win the remainder of their games. Darry Wade, halfback, was the outstanding back for the Delta Staters in that game. Delta ' s Homecoming was spoiled by Arkansas State two weeks later, when the Indians defeated the Greenies 7 to G. Bill Durham scored the lone touchdown in the first half. Arkansas came back late in the final canto to tally and boot the extra point deciding the game. Delta ' s only intersectional clash of the year brought Southeastern Okla- homa to Cleveland, and this time. Delta found winning to be sweet, with a 21 to 19 victory. Halfback Bill Sowell scored the first touchdown early in the game, followed by Tony Grezaffi ' s end run from five yards out. Delta scored their third touchdown late in the second period when Bill Durham ran 70 yards, before being stopped short of the goal at the two-yard line. On the next play Durham scored over center. Tony Grezaffi converted the extra points. Western Kentucky ' s Homecoming was dealt a mean blow by the ram- paging Greenies the next Saturday afternoon at Bowling Green. Realizing that victory can be sweet the Statesmen chalked up their first touchdown in the initial period, sending Claude Woodall across, then after Western went ahead in the second quarter. Bill Durham struck through the air, and found Charles Graham open. The rangy lad scored, standing up, bringing victory to Delta State. ... ) 1 Taylor Tatum Otis Watson Hugh Ellis Walker Clyde Wilson Darry Wade George Wilkinson Claude Woodall HIGHLIGHTS OF 1949 Delta continued its torrid pace, and returned home to meet the Tampa Spartans. The Greenies ran up their highest score of the year dousing the visitors, rudely, 46 to 7. Freshman, Dominic Bevalaque, proved the hero of that game when he scored three touchdowns, all by pass receptions. Bobby Barbour, Ed Reed. Tony Grezaffi, and Darry Wade all tallied for the States- men. The line was at its peak in cutting down Tampa backs before they were able to gain momentum. David Lingle, Jack Machell, James Magers, Hugh Chambliss, Frank Bufkin, Otis Watson, David Lindh and John Brewer were all shining examples for the Green and White as they won their fourth victory of the year. Coach Gene Chadwick ' s green-clad warriors climaxed their 1949 season against Southeastern Louisiana two days before Thanksgiving at Delta Stadium. The Lions had previously met L. S. U. and Tulane and were heavy favorites to drive the Greenies into the ground. The Statesmen had other plans, however, and promptly set the Lions down with a 19 to 7 defeat. Darry Wade was the chief scorer, hitting pay dirt twice, while Bill Durham scored the other tally. Again the line was outstanding. Bobby Barbour led the grad- uating seniors, who numbered eleven, into their final game. Those who leave the Delta fold are: Tony Grezaffi, Bill Durham, Taylor Tatum, Darry Wade, Wilbur Harpole, James Magers, Charles Graham, Henry Hughes. Buddy Madden, and Walter Hollingsworth. The 1949 season at Delta State was a great one which will r e m a i n i n the hearts of every member that wore the Green and White. $ ' i BACK ROW (1-r): Ricks, Cochran, Shipley, Medley, Garner, Boggs, Morris, Hodges, Reaves.
