The BROOM 1947-1948 Published by the Students of DELTA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Cleveland, Mississippi 1948 marks the twentieth anniversary of The Broom, our college annual, which was named in memory of Delta State ' s first president, Jim Broom. This book has portrayed between its covers the lives of our students during times of peace and plenty, during the years of depression, and the period of four years when our world was in turmoil and war. Each edition has offered something dear to the hearts of students, memories that will never be forgotten. To the following editors and sponsors of The Broom during these twenty years, the present staff pays tribute. EDITORS-IN-CHIEF 1928 CORA ERVIN Cleveland 1929 WILLIAM D. Just as you have been the ones to set the intellectual, the moral, the social, and the spiritual standards of your school while living on the campus, so now you will continue to set these standards for your school as you go out to represent it in the world. As you go so goes Delta State. W. M. KETHLEY, President. Page 21 JOE FARRAR, Ph. D. Dean of the Faculty Delta State is bursting at the seams with students and with opportunities and responsibilities. The possessor of admirable qualities as well as athletic ability, Bill was chosen as one of the squad ' s captains early in the season. Classified as a junior, he served in the Navy during the war. CHARLIE COFFMAN — The other captain and another Delta product, Charlie grew up in Merigold. He has the distinction of being the only man of the Delta squad to play vars ity ball for Delta before the war. One of the two seniors on the team, Charlie has done a magnificent job at the other end position. He was awarded the Purple Heart while serving with the Marines in the South Pacific. CO-CAPTAINS GARDINER AND COFFMAN Page 1 1 1 a i DELTA STATE VARSITY FOOTBALL HERBERT (MONK) WILSON — From Indianola, Monk, playing his final year as a Statesman, has given the opposing backs a tough time in every contest this year. He is now holding down a fine coaching position in Biloxi, Miss. TOM JONES — A product of Jonestown, where he was a letter man in three sports. Tom, a smart ball handler at left half, was largely responsible for the Greenies ' success this year. JI M CARBALLO — From the capitol city of the state comes the smallest man on the starting line-up. Playing regularly at the right half position, Jim has shown the brilliance gained from his All-State Junior College rating. EARL BARBOUR — A home town boy who is well worth his weight on any man ' s team. His drive on both offense and defense has commanded respect from the opposition throughout the season. We shall be seeing more of Bobby! TONY GREZAFFI — Benoit ' s chief claim to gridiron fame came to us with a great record. Captain of Air Prep School, Tony went to Sunflower College and received All-State recognition. In action this year Tony has shown that experience is the best teacher. ROBERT SYKES — A transfer from Sunflower Junior College, Bob hails from Philipp. Catfish play- ed great defensive ball at left guard. JACK MACHELL — From Ruleville, and the biggest man on the Greenies ' squad, Jack weighs 240 pounds. He has been operating from the tackle slot, and making his weight felt in the opposing line and Backfield. HARRY BOYD — Memphis, Tenn., is this rugged center ' s home. Playing on Tech ' s All-State team in 1941, Harry was honored with All-City selection. He spent three years in the Marines, being awarded the Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart. A letter man in baseball, he feels at home behind the plate. Page 114 WILBUR BRIGGS — One of the two Yankees on the Greenie squad, Wilbur migrated south from Detroit. He was selected as All-Detroit in his prep days, and has been playing outstanding ball at left tackle all season. BILLY STEPHENSON — A 6 foot 2 inch end man from Clarksdale, he is the fastest man on the squad. Playing his second year for the Deltans, he has sidelined from the backfield due to a leg injury- FRANK BUFKIN — A freshman from Vicksburg, who, in his prep days was chosen on the second team in the Big 8 conference, Teddy Bear has shown that he has what it takes to play the game while operating from a guard position this year. GUY LAMASTUS — Freshman quarterback from Greenville and eighteen years of age, Guy was the man who made the T-formation click. His passing and smooth ball handling ability were valuable assets to the team. NEWTON MITCHELL — Hailing from Picayune, and a transfer from Pearl River Junior College, Mitch- ell rounded out his third year of college football at tackle position. During his prep days Mitchell was selected for the annual North Mississippi versus South Mississippi football classic. CURTIS ALLEN — Graduated at Brookhaven in 1942, and coming to us from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College. Pop has been playing a lot of fullback this year. His driving ability on power plays has been a backfield keynote. L. A. JONES — A right guard if there ever was one, L. A. calls Oakland his home. He captained his high school eleven two years and was chosen All-Conference his senior year. Jones is an Ole Miss transfer and got a late start, but you will be seeing a plenty of him next season. WAYNE DAVIDSON — Leland claims this speedy halfback. Wayne is playing his second year of varsity ball for the big green team. What he lacks in weight he makes up in scrap. WALTER JOINER— Sophomore backfield man from Minter City, and a transfer from Mississippi State, Slick is playing good football. His experience in high school was a great help and asset to his ability. JOHN O ' BRIEN — John, a 19 year old sophomore tackle from Greenville, has played fine ball when called up. Graduated from Memphis Tech, he is majoring in Business here at Delta State. ARCHIE CLEMONS — An 18 year old red-headed Clevelander, Archie is in his initial year on the Delta squad. Though light for a halfback, his speed more than makes up for his size. THOMAS WILSON — Pete, another Wilson from Indianola, is playing his first year of college football at the end slot. After four years of prep ball, he captained his team his senior year. Pete states, The skin I love to touch is the pigskin. BARDETTE MONTAGUE - Reared in Kilmichael, Monty is 22 years old and a junior. Before entering Delta State he spent two years at Holmes Junior College, being selected All-State at guard position. JOHN B. BURNS — Gunnison was the birthplace of John. Playing his first year of college football, Bob has improved rapidly and will bear watching at the end position. Page 1)5 DAVID FRANK — From ' gator country, Dave named Chatham, La., as his home town. Playing his first year at the grid sport, he has shown plenty of speed and ability. Although he was one of the lightest men on the team, don ' t let his size fool you. ROY BALFOUR — A freshman tackle from Vick;burg, Roy comes to Delta State with plenty of pep school experience. With 219 pounds, the opposition should find him a hard man to move in the line. DAN O ' ROURKE — Jaso, a Lula, Miss., citizen, comes to Delta States as a freshman at the age of 17. With ample prep experience, he has given a good account of himself at center. JACK HUNT — Another youngster on the varsity, Jack is a freshman and has played good foot- ball at the quarterback. Before entering Delta State, he attended Cleveland High and the Webb School at Bellbuckle, Tenn., starring in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis before his graduation. ROBERT CIRE — Bob is from Greenville, 23 years old and a smart-thinking quarterback. In prep school he was selected in 1943 on the Big 8 team in his senior year. Cire entered Pearl River Junior College after serving in the army, and came to Delta State last fall. JAMES OAKS — Another Greenville boy, Monkey is gunning for the halfback spot. His high school experience at end was a great asset to his football ability here. With us Oaks tried the backfield and has done well. JOHN HOFFMAN — Big John, the other Yankee on this year ' s varsity, is also from Detroit. A freshman this year, he was a Marine for three years and played service ball for the Jacksonville Flyers. He has shown that he has football ability and is a strong contender for backfield position. CECIL WATSON — Cecil is a 20 year old freshman back from Marks. Graduating from high school in 1944, Cecil spent two years in the Army. He was one of the few at Delta State who played organized football in a foreign country. JIMMY TARZI — The other Clarksdale contribution to the gridiron, Jim played center and made a fine job of it. Playing his second year for Delta Sta ' e, he is a sophomore and is majoring in Business Administration. (No picture). He ' s the rugged guard and allows little scoring by his op- ponents. WILLIE R. SMITH - 6 foot, 1 inch forward from Cleveland, Billy captained an All-Delta team at Shaw High in 1943. A good set-shot artist and consistent rebounder, his left hand push shots are difficult to guard. BILL DUNCAN — 6 foot, 3 inch center, a first year player from Preston, was high point man at Scooba Junior College — a record repeated this year for the Statesmen. A rugged center and a dangerous man on the pivot spot, Bill can shoot with either hand. CURTIS ALLEN — 6 foot forward from Brookhaven, a Co-Lin transfer, there he was high scorer under Coach Ricks last season. He fancies a one hand push shot from anywhere on the court. Very aggressive, with plenty of speed, Allen is a valuable man. TYE RAKESTRAW — Five foot, ten inch forward from Macedonia, a sensational freshman, Tye was voted on the All-S. I. A. A. team at Bowling Green, Ky., last year. He continues to burn up the hardwood, his set shot being the two-handed set shot from far out. However, he is effective from any- where, averaging close to 13 points last season. HARMON BOGGS — 6 foot, 2 inch guard from New Site, another outstanding product of the hills, Harmon, a sophomore, was a regular in his rookie season. He ' s the drive of the squad, setting up the plays under Coach Ricks ' system. His consistent rebounding under both baskets has tabbed him as one of the finest players to don the green and white. DON E. SPRY — Six foot forward from Oakland, Calif., is playing his second year as a Statesman. He acquired plenty of basketball knowledge while playing a forward spot with the Base All-Stars in Manila during the war. His favorite shot is a one-handed push shot from close in. MADISON STANDFORD — Six foot, eight-and-a half inch center from New Albany, a freshman who has developed more than any one man on the team this season. The tallest man to grace the Delta hardwood in the school ' s history, Slim fires with either hand. His left-handed bank shots are unguard- able. PERCY WILLIAMSON - Six foot gua-d from Baldwin, the third senior on the squad this year. Stick is playing his first year as a Statesman. Be c ore the war, Percy played at Sunflower Junior Col- lege. He is especially good on long shots and scrapping for rebounds. FRANK COCHRAN — 6 foot, 1 inch guard from Hazel, Ky., a regular playmaker from last year ' s great squad, Frank, the oldest man on the starting line-up, at 25, is the scrappiest. The best defensive dogger on the varsity, he shoots with either hand, but favors the two-handed push shot. He is a potent scorer at all times. LESTER McKINNEY — 5 foot, 1 1 inch forward from New Site, the fourth sophomore on the five, McKinney teamed with Boggs to win the state prep title in 1946. M.ac is the best change-of-pace man on the squad. His speed plus shooting eye ha3 spelled defeat to many an opponent. BILLY RAY HODGES — 5 foot, 1 1 inch forward from Collinsville, the youngest of the Hodge family who have made a name for themselves in Delta State athletics, as sophomore Billy is continuing to live up to that name. An uncanny two-handed jump shot is one of his specialties. Page 121 SHIELD WINNERS Girls who receive a shield must excel in a number of sports.
