DICKSON President National Association of Intercollegiate Football Delta State ' s athletic program during the 1942-43 year featured an expanded pro- gram of physical education and intra-mural sports. The boys ' physical education classes were possibly the largest in history, fulfilling the requirements of the various branches of the Reserves. Intense physical training was given the boys in the form of calisthenics, basketball, softball, and other varied ac- tivities in order that they might be better prepared to take their places in our armed forces. Although both basketball and football were postponed for the duration, the intense rivalry between the Greens and Whites kept the memory of fcotball very much alive on the college campus. BASKETBALL 1943 Coach A. D. Dickson and his Delta State basketball squad were set for another successful cage season in 1943 before the inability to schedule games with collegiate opponents within traveling range forced the cancellation of the college basketball plans. With a squad of 15 men on hand, despite the fact that all but one were newcomers, Coach Dickson expected to develop a quintet comparable with the great D. S. T. C. cage teams of the past. However, war-time conditions caused the cage sport to follow foctball on the list of sports abandoned for the duration. The basketball team played several games with independent teams, and won them all, showing flashes of promising brilliance in these few contests. The 1943 Delta State basketball squad was composed of the following: WALTER VARNADO, a senior, was the sole holdover from last year ' s squad. A guard, he was counted on heavily for superior action this season. BUDDY DARWIN, a freshman forward, won all-state honors at Wheeler High School, and was expected to prove a valuable asset to the Statesmen. TROY ENNIS, another all-state high school performer, was counted one of the leading offensive guns for his center position. MERLE ROWAN, a freshman, played forward, and displayed exceptional ability as a sharp-shooter and all-around floor man. CLARENCE CHISHOLM, also a freshman, was a capable guard, excellent on defense. GUY ROLAND, is the last of the freshmen group. He was a forward, with a ready eye for the basket. JOE BAKER, a junior, was the only junior college transfer on the squad. An all-around performer, he played guard on the 1943 team. MITCHELL FORD, a sophomore, although without previous experience, showed up well as a guard. RANNY WILLIAMS, a junior, was another of the boys who had no previous collegiate experience. He played forward. A. C. Doc KEMP, displayed promise as a speedy forward before he was called by the Air Corps in February. CLARENCE SMITH, a member of the Delta Champion high school team two years ago, had played no college ball, but was a fine forward. He was a sophomore. CARL BARBOUR, was hampered by an ankle injury much of the season, but showed promise as a forward and center. He was also a sophomore. RALPH HALE, a junior, played well as a forward and center, despite having had no previous experience in college basketball. BERTRAM ROBERTSON, another junior, was a shifty forward. JAMES YOUNG, a sophomore, was a rough and ready guard. EDGAR FARNED, while without experience, was a scrappy guard. He was a sophomore. MISS ETHEL CAIN CALLING ALL WOMEN We are a nation at war and one of our most effective weapons is good health. Each of us has a responsibility to our country to be fit, to be ready and able to give not only every ounce of devotion but also the maximum energy and vitality of which we are capable. Physical fitness is as important for women as for men. Many women are now at work in defense plants, are serving as nurses, medical social workers, and are with the Red Cross, USO, WAACS, SPARS, and Marines. Many are busy on the home front, teaching, caring for children, and doing civilian defense work. These new, more strenuous, and more vital duties take a margin of energy beyond whatever your physical endurance has been. The one way women can help instead of hinder the war effort is to provide that margin. Therefore, LADY BE FIT! WSr 4 ' i  ? FIRST AID SPRING PAGEANT 1942 MfTT 113 COIL tot IHUH m .
