The Delta Statesmen started off with a small squad, and finished with a still smaller one. Just before Homecoming, the squad numbered 24, but in that group were two dozen hard playing, spirited, well-coached athletes. This year marked the beginning of the Fresh- men rule, and first-year men played no small part in the success of the season. The man- aging of Slim McDaniel also contributed to the comfort and morale of the team. Coach A. D. Dickson was coaching his sixth year of football here, and despite the injuries and the draft that caused unmeasurable dam- age, still did great work, and is to be com- mended for his efforts. Delta opened up their heme game schedule with a victory over Troy, Alabama, Teachers by the count of 25-0. A loss to Louisiana Col- lege 7-0 followed; Memphis State came out ahead by 23-7. Murray State Teachers College defeated Delta 41-0 last season, but were held to a scoreless tie this season. Mississippi Southern were gunning for an overwhelming victory, but only won 26-7, and were far outplayed the last half. ■ PffPSbK, A. D. Dickson In games won, the school had a bad foot- ball season. In spirit and fight and will to win the season was among the best in the Nation. The leader of this inspired squad was Captain Hussman, and his leadership cannot be overestimated. Four seniors were on the squad, twelve juniors, three sophomores, and five freshmen. All things pointed to a pros- perous season next year— but then came the WAR! fi r IMMJLMa CHEERLEADERS 1941-1942 LESTER EAVENSON Sophomore Cheerleader BOOTSIE HART Senior Cheerleader ALLIE CONNER Head Cheerleader DOT BARKEMEYER Freshman Cheerleader JANIE ANDING Junior Cheerleader , DELTA FIELD THE FIELD HOUSE )-o dkail X .a 1 1 i jp r i p - • ■ R  g Si i £ IP wf P M £•■ .24. ?0 i — ' ' ■ ' ■ .. Shumake left in mid-season for the regular Army. 37— CLIFTON WADE, iSenion, played tackle, and was among the hardest fighters on the team. Wade was offered a try-out by the Detroit Lions Professional team, but left school after Christmas for military service. 34— ROBERT McGAHEY, (Senior), played guard, and though handicapped all year by injuries, threw his charging form into the path of many opposing ball carriers. 26— MARVIN BAGGETT, (Senior), was versatile, being at home either at wingback, tailback, or fullback, and did the chosen job well. Baggett left in mid-season for the Air Corps. 47— WALTER VARNADO, (Junior), played end, and was easily the best pass receiver on the team, and among the best in the S. I. A. A. conference. He was a terrible tackier, and did well en defense, too. 42— ROBERT TELFAIR, ' Junior), was given honorable mention on the Associated Press Little All-American team la st year. He was a demon on defense, and held Delta ' s opponents to practically no gain through his side of the line. Telfair ' s in the Naval Air Corps at present. 45— HAROLD YOUMAN, (Junior), was among the largest men on the squad, and usee in capably in playing one of the tackle positions for the Statesmen. 40— BILL BURLESON, (Junior), was one of the regular guards, but when called upon, played end with skill. He was a good line-backer, and a fine blocker. 35— ERNEST LOCKETT, Junior ' , was better knewn as Lucy and played guard. He was one of the hardest tacklers en the squad. The draft claimed him after the final game. c% u 4fk f ti t jjr s • § , 7 lie PLAYERS 46-CAPTAIN W. C. J. HUSSMAN, (Senior), was the regular center, and despite a shoulder injury, was one of the bulwarks in the Statesmen line all season. And as an offensive pivot man, none surpassed him. 43— CHARLIE CONIGLIO, (Junior), came from far-off New Jersey to play in the regular full-back spot for Delta State, and was one of the hardest running backs seen all year. 27— WALLY CAMP, (Junior) was the quarterback. He was small in stature, but made up for this with his excellent blocking and brainy signal calling. Camp left at the end of the fall quarter. 30— A. J. OUBRE, (Junior), was a wingback who possessed speed, determination, and ability as a broken field runner. He also possessed a call from the Army Air Corps, and left shortly after Christmas. 39— CHESTER WATSON, Junior), played either fullback or wingback, and was the dependable type of player that the coach likes to have on his team. The Air Corps has him now. 22— W. L. McDONALD, (Junior), was a quarterback who would tackle harder per pound than any man on the squad. Red left immediately after the fall quarter, and left many memories. 29— FRANK DAVIS, (Junior), played tailback, and was one of the best punters to enter Delta in many a year. Davis left after Christmas. Ike PLAYERS 19-CHARLIE COFFMAN, (Sophomore), played a lot of end for the Statesmen. He was big, rugged, capable at receiving passes, and a hard tackier. He wears the colors of the Marines now. 24-CHARLIE BOYD, (Sophomorei, played guard, and always put out all he had. Boyd could be depended upon to always do his part both for the team, and now for the Marines. 25-HERBERT WILSON, (Sophomore), was the understudy of Captain Hussman, and what he lacked in size was made up in sheer guts and spirit. 41-RAY MclNTOSH, ' Freshman ' , called Michigan his home, and Delta State his school. He played tackle, and tried hard all the time. He was developing into a great player— but then came the draft. 4W jv 31— EDGAR FARNED, iFreshmam, was a local boy who did right for the team and himself at a tackle posi- tion. He played but little, but he showed up well when given his opportunity. 32— DEAN BROOKS, (Freshman), was the best passer ever to don the Delta State school colors, and he played tailback. Brooks set an intercollegiate record for passes completed in one season, far outdistancing all his rivals. 20-CARL CUP BARBOUR, Freshman), was among the fastest men on the squad, and he made many long gains from his tailback position. He is a Cleveland High product. 28-JAMES YOUNG, (Freshmam, was both an end and a fullback. Young was rough, willing to learn, and had not the war blackened the Mississippi sport ' s picture was being heavily counted on for next year ' s team.
