Coach A. D. Dickson, and Manager James Slim McDoniel. The Statesmen played only schools with great football teams and were not able to claim a victory, but they showed great spirit and were true sportsmen in face of defeat. The first game, with Livingston, Alabama Teachers, was a scoreless tie. Then the States- men absorbed a 12 to licking from Mill- saps. Louisiana College was the next foe, and here Varnado scored the first Delta touchdown on a pass. The final score was Delta State 6— Louisiana College 6. Delta State neither won nor tied any other games, but they have nothing to be ashamed of. All played inspired football. Eight seniors were on the squad and will be hard men to replace. However, the remainder of the squad should be improved, and great things are expected of them for the coming season. The two freshmen, Charlie Boyd and Charlie Coffman, are being counted on to play three years of good football for the Statesmen. THE ' 40- ' 41 SQUAD o p 33 J 15 46 ai DELTA STATE 40— p. C. PERCY AUST, (Senior), was a dependable guard that held down his posi- tion on defensive, no matter the opposition. Percy will be missed. 31— EDDIE CREWS, (Senior), was listed as on end, but he also turned in a creditable performance when called on to serve elsewhere. He will be hard to replace. •42— GEORGE WILSON, (Senior), was the most improved lineman on the squad and made the Statesmen a very aggressive guard. He will leave a vacant spot in the line on his graduation. 22— JOE THOMAS, (Senior), was one of the main cogs in this year ' s team from his right half position. It will be hard to find a man to fill Joe ' s shoes. 24— WILLIAM ART CASTLE, (Senior), is a local lad who turned in 3 years of good full- backing for Delta State. What he lacked in size, he made up in spirit. 25-CHARLIE HOSS BARBOUR, (Senior), was a southpaw passer that had accuracy plus with a pigskin. He played 3 years of good Varsity football for Delta from left halfback. 32— LAWRENCE EARLY SHANNON, (Senior), came to Delta State as a freshman and played 3 years of outstanding guard for the Statesmen. 39— MUREL DUCE RODGERS, (Senior), was a guard who could always be depended on to do his part, no matter the situation. Delta needs more men of his calibre for next year. ■ 45-.;T JM - M. 19-BILL SHAW, (Junior), was a red-shirt last season but lived up to expectations this year with his performance from his left half position. He will be back to do his part next year. 20-ROBERT McDONALD, (Junior), is the older of the McDonald brothers that caused havoc with the Statesmen op- position with their drive and fight from their backfield posts. 23— DANIEL FORNEA, (Junior), came to us from Pearl River Junior College and showed much ability as a kicker, runner, and passer. 26— MARVIN BAGGETT, (Junior), is on Alabama boy who came to Mississippi to school and played some good football from his right half place on the team. 27— FRED SLIP McKEE, (Junior), was a quarterback who called the right signal and then blocked his man. Slip was called to duty by the National Guards. 37— MORRIS GRANT, (Junior), left in the middle; of the season but made Delta a good lineman while he was around. 38— L. W. STRIP WALKER, (Junior), was handicapped by a leg injury all season, but he is being counted on to make the Statesmen a great center next year. 41— EDWIN SNYDER, (Juniori, played a lot of good tackle for Delta State, and it was a hard blow when he accepted the call of the Air Corps. He finished the season here, however. 44— CLIFTON WADE, (Junior), is big and used every pound to advantage in his tackle position. He will be one of the outstanding tackles of the team next year. 30— MAC KINARD, (Junior), was the fastest man on the squad from his end position. His specialty was the end-around play, and it was a great ground gainer. He is now in the National Guard camp. 33-CHARLIE SHUMAKE, (Junior), was an excellent pass receiver and was good on going downfield under punts. He will make an even better end next year for Delta. 34— ROBERT McGAHEY, (Junior), was one of the fighters on the team and is be- ing depended upon to play a lot of guard next year for Delta State. 35— DENTON BINK JOHNSON, (Junior), lacked experience but showed signs of de- veloping into Q great end or center for next year ' s team. 36— ROBERT SIAAMONS, (Junior), will mean much to the Statesmen of ' 41 with his spirit, fire, and ability. 21— WILLIE LEE McDONALD, (Sophomore), is the other brother, and his prowess as a runner and passer will aid the Statesmen ' s cause for 2 more years. 43— ROBERT TELFAIR, (Sophomore), was only a sophomore but he played the best tackle possible all year. He was one of the iron men on team, playing nearly all of each contest. 46— W. C. J. HUSSMAN, (Sophomore), came from far-off New York to ploy football for Delta State. Alternating at center or tackle, according to the current need, he played game after game without a substitution. Delta is fortunate to hove him 2 more years. 28— LEE CRAWFORD, (Sophomore), did much for Delta State from fullback before the season was over. He is going to do Delta a lot of good next year. 29— CHESTER WATSON, (Sophomore), did well this season for a first year man. He should be among the best backs on the squad for the next 2 years. 47— WALTER VARNADO, (Sophomore), was easily the best pass receiver on the team and good at breaking up offensive plays. He will play 2 more years of excellent end here at Delta State. -CLARENCE BRADFORD, (Sophomore), was one of the potential men for the end po- sition. BASKETBALL Delta State ' s ccntribution to the basketbafi game this year was made by a squad cf 12 players and Ccoch A. D. Dickson. The Delta Statesmen have been famous for many years for their excellent cage team, and this year was no exception. Five letter-men from last season ' s team, which captured third place in the National Intercollegiate Tournament, returned and were helped ably by the addition of one sophomore and six junior college transfers. The Statesmen started the season with a decisive victory over the Mississippi Col- lege Choctaws, followed scon by the conquest of the Ole Miss Rebels. One of the high-lights of the 1941 season was the defeat of the Mississippi Southern College Con- federates by the score of 93 to 21. Also among the features of the season was the defeat of the Millsaps Majors, winners of the Dixie Conference championship, by the count of 53 to 37. The conference record for the season was 12 victories and 2 losses. Delta State went to the S.I. A. A. Tournament at Bowling Green, Ky., and was elimi- nated in the opening game by Western Kentucky Teachers by one point— 49 to 48. Western was the potential champion. The Statesmen again made the trip to the National Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, and were defeated in the quarter-finals by the West Texas Teachers, Canyon, Texas. ke PLAYERS 9— THERMON BLACKLIDGE, (Senior), center, is one of the greatest players Delta State was ever fortunate enough to put on the court. He made Ail-American last year and was named captain of the second team Ail-American this season. The States- men can never have another player like Blacklidge. 12— WILLIAM McDonald, (Senior), forward, has as his specialty getting the ball off the backboard. Big Mack was a leader, and he was chosen the captain of the team for both the S.I. A. A. and National Tournaments. -LEWIS SPEIGHTS, (Senior), forward, was one of the hardest fighters ever to wear the Green and White of Delta State. Speights could always be counted on to do his part in scoring, and It will be really hard to fill Speights ' shoes. 11— ARLIS ricks, (Senior), guard, was a senior who turned in performance after per- formance that will make it impossible for him to be forgotten. He was a power on defense and did his part on offense. Ricks was named on the second All-Amer- ican team this year as a guard. 13— GEORGE WILSON, (Senior), guard, was one of the surest shots on the squad from his position far out on the court. He was a hard fighter and not an easy one to replace. 4— WALTER MARTIN, (Junior), guard, was on his toes every minute he was in the bol gome. Martin will be back next year to go forward with Delta. 10-JAMES SLIM McDANIEL, (Junior), center, hod the distinction of being the tallest player on the squad. He is 6 ' 5 in height, and he used it to advantage. He is counted on for next year. 14— JAMES LITTLE JIMMY HODGES, (Junior), forward, was one of the fastest men on the squad and hod a good eye for the basket. Delta State is fortunate to have Little Jimmy bock for another season. 3— LYLE BULLARD, (Junior), forward, was handicapped all season by an injured leg but still helped Delta State. He made the All-S.I.A.A. team this year, and he is being counted on for next season. 8— PAUL KILCULLEN, (Junior), forward, dropped in goals with amazing speed and reg- ularity. Kilcullen was a hard player. He has been elected captain of the 1942 Statesme n squad. In the first round, the Juniors beat the Freshmen, with the Seniors trouncing the Sopho- mores. In the final match, the Seniors were no match for the hard fighting and tower- ing Juniors. 7— MARVIN BAGGETT, (Junior), guard, came to us a junior and will be back next year to aid the Statesmen in their court game. Baggett improved steadily as the season progressed and should continue to do so. 6 WALTER VARNADO, (Sophomore), guard, was only a sophomore and did not play much. He showed flashes that pointed out that he will play two more seasons of good basketball for the Statesmen. wUmmuUj. California and Florida don ' t have thing on Delta State (in the early fall and late spring). Delta State ' s swimming pool is one of the most attractive parts of the campus. Sv imming has become an in- tegral part of the physical educa- tion program of Delta State. The physical education classes receive instructions in sv imming about a month in the fall and in the spring. The swimming pool is also a great recreational center. Those who do not wish to go in and get wet may sit on the outside and al- low themselves to be splashed through the wire. POOL... The beautiful costumes and lighting effects gave the de- sired setting of this pageant of Mississippi History. The pageant began with Mississippi as it was when the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians were happy and free without interference of the white people and followed the progress of the state on through the Civil War and afterwards when the people set to work to rebuild Mis- sissippi into a new and vigor- ous state.
